Its all a rumor and speculation at the moment but according to this article by the Gameindustry.biz, Zenimax the parent company of Bethesda and id Software is looking to add Valve to their collection.

However, it’s also worth watching closely what happens to Steam in the coming months. Unconfirmed industry scuttlebutt suggests that Zenimax - the parent company of Bethesda, which made headlines back in June when it acquired legendary PC studio id Software - is still on the acquisition trail, and has been making eyes at Half-Life creators Valve across the bar.

To be honest, I'm a little bit surprised because I always though Valve would eventually become one of the big publishers themselves through Steam. But if this means that I get to play Episode 3 someday before the end of this century then go Zenimax!

I'm find by it if Zenimax doesn't ruin the company or take to much control in the process but that won't happen.

They are taking a pretty hands off approach with id software by leaving Carmack in charge. I think it might work in Valve's favor because they get the backing of a large publisher while still maintaining creative control.

I'm not sure what specific benefit Valve would receive if this were to happen.  Last I heard, Valve is doing well independently.  It doesn't surprise me that Zenimax is watering at the mouth with desire to own Steam, though.

I don't think this is something Valve would commit to. They have vaults and vaults of cash, they're doing extremely well independently and they have vaults and vaults of cash. They have so much money. Vaults of them.

Valve has been offered shit like this a hundred times, always turning it down. This will be no different.

I would be shocked if this comes of anything. But boy oh boy it's a sign of how ambitious Zenimax is getting. They must still have Fallout 3 money to spend. Good luck to them.

@Killjoy: That is an accurate visual approximation of Valve's headquarters.

Considering there was rumour EA was going to buy Valve and that turned out false I am inclined to say this is as well.

Valve wouldn't sell themselves, why? They have too good of a thing going with Steam and to be bought over by a larger parent company means that all of the ideals and efforts Valve have put into shaping Steam to be what it is today could be jeopardised. And I imagine any company wanting to buy Valve would do so because of Steam and the Half Life IP. Both are two things close to Valve's heart and not something I imagine they would willingly sell away in a company buyout / takeover bid without some clauses or legal obligations put in place first assuming Valve ever entertained the idea of allowing that to happen.

If I had to put money on this then I bet this is more a case of Valve perhaps looking to buy out Zenimax or purchase a studio owned by them. Over the years Valve has really established their solidarity and independence to the point they could probably afford to expand their company and work on multiple IPs of various game genre and style. And a great way of doing that is by bringing in new talent, the easiest way of course to do this is buy out a small studio who are used to working with each other and set them on a new project.

The fact that Valve isn't even a public company yet (I believe.) tells you volumes about whether or not they'll accept being purchased.
