The thing is, those Twilight things are not really vampires, they're so far aways from the original vision of Stoker and Anne Rice. They're just a poor attempt to appeal to the disney crowd.
My suggestion: Read Bram Stoker's Dracula, Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles series. Watch Nosferatu: The Vampire and Interview with the Vampire. Then you'll know how the real vampires are supposed to be.

I think their are awesome, screw Mary Shelley's romantic goth take on things, I like the real legend, of folklore in Eastern Europe..Their culture fascinates me.
Slightly OT:
This Romanian restaurant not far from where I live is awesome, they sell charcoal grilled bat wings!. The waiter told me the bats are farmed in a factory in the countries capital, Bucharest.

Vampires are officially gay. It used to be different with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You could have badass vampires, hot chicks, girls all over the badass vampires. Man, those were the days. Now these Twilight books/movies come out and all vampires are officially gay.

Quite frankly, as I'm going down my list of vampire movies...I'm realizing I like a lot of them. Nonetheless, the shitty movies are pretty shitty, so I'm still going to say that vampires are dumb and more movies with zombies need to be made.

Vampires work best when represented as the dark, evil underside of society, whatever that may mean to whoever. (For Stoker, it was foreigners; for others, its rapists, con-men, anarchists, religion, etc. It can really be anything.) The best vampire stories play off of these ideas. See Near Dark, Let the Right One In or 30 Days of Night (the comic, not the god-awful film) for examples of good vampire fiction from relatively recent times. Buffy for the most part got this right as well, representing vampires as essentially soulless human beings (though the whole 'vampires with souls' thing is really troublesome.)
Bad vampire fiction tries to portray vampires as misunderstood, tortured souls. I can't go into how creepy and weird the Twilight phenomenon is, especially given Stephanie Meyer's moral objectives. (Anne Rice's take is just as baffling and unsettling, but she's gone on her own different moral tangents for years now.) Sometimes this works, but more often than not it confuses the cross-talk and just plays into the worst "sexy bad boy" stereotypes. Twilight is especially confusing because what its versions of "vampires" is barely recognizable as the former creature.
So in short: vampires are awesome, but only traditional or at the very least interesting non-traditional interruptions.

She was one of the most daring novelists of her time, especially given her gender. To say nothing of basically inventing the post-apocalypse genre. Also, she never wrote any vampire stories.
Anyway, Frankenstein > Dracula.
