That should give you a good idea about the state of game development in this country. The award committee was like: "Here you go, folks. Venetica, best German action game of 2009. Can't expect Crytek to release a game every year, right?"
Wanna know what took second place that year? I shit you not: Alarm für Cobra 11: Burning Wheels, aka Crash Time II. That's right, the sequel to Crash Time.
Germany, fuck yeah!

In this German action-RPG, Scarlett, the daughter of Death itself, sets out to rescue her ghoulish father from an evil Necromancer who threatens to destroy the world.
"Best German action game of 2009", according to Germans
" What's the last game spain released hmm? What's Ukraine without stalker or metro? what's sweden without DICE or the amnesia dudes? and I've heard very good things about Anno, so I dunno what you're saying "Sweden has Massive, DICE, Avalanche, Starbreeze, Frictional Games and more, I'd say we have a pretty good number of development studios

I've never liked German games at all. I'm not entirely sure why to be honest. The concept for most of them are great but the execution seems really clunky and sterile to me. They're technically proficient though but the story or the characters in any of them have never interested me at all. I do really like the Anno series though.
first, whispered world can roll over and die. the german voice acting in run of the mill adventure games made here can make me crawl up a frikkin wall
that said: germans almost exclusively make adventure games or rpg games with the whole sundae spiced with a bit of building-sim games, like the old settler games or anno, and turds made after frikkin tv shows (looking at you cobra!)
but the gaming industry as a WHOLE doesn't seem to even try to make something work. seriously. there are sooo many crappy games made over here. gothic and anno are the only exceptions off the top of my head
what's even more hilarious: germany (to my knowledge) has two frikkin major universities (or private school thingies, I forget which) that focus exclusively on game design. oh germany, you so crazy!
" @valrog: My problem is that it's embarrassing to have Venetica highlighted as one of the country's best games of 2009, when it looks like a middling game at best. The fact that there was nothing better out in 2009 is also not casting a positive light. "There was better. Just not in that specific genre. Also, there wasn't really an Action/Adventure game besides Venetica. That being said, Crytek should totally make an RPG.
" Man country specific game awards should be limited to America, Japan and Canada. Eastern Europe should just bunch together and have their own game awards, Dave would obviously be imported to judge it. "You realise Eastern Europe is already bunched together, hence why we both just said Eastern Europe. If you were insinuating that Germany is in anyway Eastern European, then dear, dear me.
" Have fun playing this and Farm Simulator 2011, Germany. "We can't hear you; we're too busy playing board games and installing solar cells on rooftops.

You also have W!Games, makers of Greed Corp." The only noteworthy games my country produces are the Killzone games. "
Bavaria is pushing hard for a change of procedure that would allow them to ban a game after it has been rated, which would grant them the power to ban everything they don't like.
Heh, fuck all that shit. I have it pre-ordered from Amazon.co.uk, and if they decide to pull a Black Ops again (i.e. refuse to ship it to Germans), there's a multitude of other places to order from.
Thanks for posting, i missed that story. I wish things were different here.
