Venom is a playable character and boss character in a number of video games. His first appearance was in the Game Boy side-scroller The Amazing Spider-man released in 1990, as the game's primary villain. A sequel to this game entitled The Amazing Spider-man 2 curiously lacked Venom, even though it was hot on the success of the Carnage storyline and featured Carnage as a main villain. Venom's second and possibly one of his most memorable appearances was in the Spider-man: The Video Game arcade game, released in 1991. Venom is featured prominently in the game as the first major boss character and he is encountered several more times throughout the game, including the final battle.

He is a main character and playable for the first time in Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage and Spider-Man and Venom: Separation Anxiety. Venom is encountered several times in 2000's Spider-Man, in addition to the Venom symbiote being unlocked as an alternate costume for Spider-Man. He appears in Spiderman: Friend Or Foe as one of the most powerful partners in the game.

Ultimate Venom is the main villain in Ultimate Spider-Man, and his playable appearance after completing the game is particularly famous for his GTA style gameplay and ability to eat civilians. He is one of the playable characters in Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, and Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. He is also the final boss in Spider-Man 3.

Venom serves as the main antagonist of Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. During this game he found the ability to clone his symbiote, though the symbiote eventually proves impossible for him to control and proves a menace to entire world. Venom's good side can still appear in the game, since in some of the possible endings he sacrifices himself to stop a monster composed of multiple symbtiotes. He is also included in the downloadable expansion "Villains Pack" for the Xbox 360 version of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, voiced by Steve Blum, as well as being included as a playable character in the sequel, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: Fusion.

Venom Variations

Ultimate Venom

In the Ultimate Spider-Man comic and video game Venom is the result of an attempt to cure various illnesses, such as cancer, by Peter Parker and Eddie Brock Jr's fathers.  The two scientists were trying to create a liquid 'suit' that would analyse the patients biology and then attempt  to find a natural way to cure their illness, as Eddie Brock Jr puts it in the comic; "If a cancer had spread... the suit would search the body for the right natural toxins [needed to treat it]... and put them to work". However the suit never got finished and only made it to stage two in which the patient found they had enhanced strength and physical properties before the scientific duo ran out of money and had to abandon the project.
Short on money and desperate to see their dream of the ultimate medical aid become a reality Parker and Brock took up staff posistions within Trask Industries and continued their work. However when the Trask bosses realised that this potential cancer treatment could be used as a weapon they seized control over the project and locked its creators out of their own office. Angered by the loss of their 'baby' the scientists started trying to re-create the suit again in secret behind the backs of Trask Industries to prove their ownership of it. Unfortunately Eddie Brock Sr. and Richard Parker were never to see the end of their project as they both died in a mysterious plane crash, leaving only a very small bottle of the liquid 'suit' behind as their legacy.

Upon discovering what had happened to his father's experiment Peter Parker decided that he would have to steal a small sample of the liquid and finish of the work that had been begun years before. Whilst scooping out a sample to take home to his basement lab Parker accidental spilled a little of the liquid on his hand, it instantly started to grow and engulf him, completely covering his whole body and creating a dark purple version of Peter's own Spider-Man suit. The new 'black suited' Spider-Man carried on his crime fighting life as normal, albeit with greater strength and agility, until he witnesses a criminal shooting an innocent civilian whilst trying to make a get away. Spidey chases the perpetrator into a warehouse and finally gets hold of him, upon grabbing him Parker starts to have flashbacks to his uncle Ben's shooting, without realising what is happening his mask grows teeth and he lunges at the shooter screaming “I want your blood”, luckily Peter manages to gain control of himself and flees the scene. As he fights with the suit trying to remove it Spidey swings into some electrical cables, destroying the suit and leaving Parker unconscious and naked on the floor.

Having realised the dark power that this suit holds Parker decides that the only course of action is to destroy it forever. As Peter sneaks back into the lab to collect the rest of the sample for destruction he is discovered by Eddie Brock Jr, who having seen the new 'dark Spider-Man' on the news earlier wearing a suit that looks very similar to the suit created by his father rushed to the lab to make sure it hadn't been stolen. Brock realises that Parker must be Spider-Man and confronts him, Peter explains that the chemical their parents created is not only dangerous, but seems to have a mind of it's own, an evil mind! With this Parker takes the liquid to destroy it and leaves Brock to try and get his head around the whole situation.

As soon as Parker is gone Eddie returns to the lab, angered and feeling humiliated he removes back-up sample that he had been keeping secretly and plunges his fingers into it. Consumed by the suit Brock lays on the floor shivering as the liquid swarms all over his body, he is discovered by a cleaner who asks if Eddie is ok, before the words can even finish leaving his mouth tendrils lash out from the suit and grab hold of the cleaner before row after row of razor sharp teeth tear him to pieces. Brock kills two more people as he leaves the building, again by grabbing them with the tendrils and then consuming them, the suit has taken on a different look when he wears it, it now permanently has teeth and a long slobbering tongue hanging out from his mouth.

Meanwhile Parker is sitting in school staring idly out of the window at the rain soaked football field when he seems a hulking monster standing outside. This massive creature has rows of razor sharp teeth forming a demented grin as he stares back up at Parker, immediately Peter runs out of the classroom and down to the filed to confront his foe, quite possibly his deadliest yet, a foe who calls himself Venom!
