One of Batman's/Bruce Wayne's closest friends. He is the butler/surgeon of the Wayne family, and is the closest thing that Bruce has to a parent.
After witnessing the cold-blooded murder of his parents, young Bruce Wayne swore to combat the evil that took their lives. Using his family's fortune, he travelled the world, training to physical and mental perfection. Once his training was complete, he returned to Gotham City as the Dark Knight, Batman.
Catwoman a.k.a Selina Kyle is a DC comics vixen created in 1940. She has served as an on and off love interest for Batman ever since.
Professor Hugo Strange is a comic book supervillain in the DC Comics universe. He is one of Batman's recurring villains.
James Gordon is the Police Commissioner of Gotham City. Despite Batman's dubious methods of law enforcement, Gordon co-operates and assists him, allowing his crusade on crime to proceed unabated. He is also the father of Barbara Gordon AKA Batgirl (and Oracle)
The Mad Hatter combines his obsession with the works of Lewis Carroll with an equally unhealthy fascination with headgear. Utilizing various forms of mind control, Jervis Tetch roams the streets of Gotham City committing crimes to feed his deranged ego.
The warden of Arkham Asylum. He attempts to cure the psychopaths that inhabit it.

The Joker is Batman's archnemesis. First appearing in Batman #1 in 1940, he schemes against the Caped Crusader to this day. He was played by various actors including Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill, Richard Epcar, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto and Joaquin Phoenix.
The Penguin is a short deformed man who is one of Batman's greatest foes. He builds high tech umbrellas and uses them as weapons. He also seems to have an unusual obsession with birds.
Thomas Wayne is the father of Bruce Wayne, and the husband of Martha Wayne. His death caused Bruce to become Batman.
