It isn't that Dan not knowing how to play is frustrating, it's that both Jeff and Brad don't know exactly what they are talking about. It's like they trying to give someone directions by just pointing their finger in the direction they think is the place and saying "over there!"

@asmo917: The best way to learn the ins and outs of the game is from more experienced players. Find a helpful, friendly guild. There are a lot of leveling guilds out there that will be helpful to new players in particular.

So I completely love this feature. But it is pure pain. Holy shit. I think I just needed to say that, out loud, in order to cure the nearly physical, genuine anxiety these videos have caused me. The world needs to know the agony that is watching Dan play WoW for the first time. And I know that is the point - the appeal of this series IS of a complete noob acting like one, being led on by people with enough knowledge to sound like they know what's up, but most of it being out of date and inaccurate. And its amazingly successful in that regard.

But just, it is very difficult to contain my desire to shout NO STOP THAT WHAT ARE YOU DOING OH GOD WHY WHY DAN WHY WHAT WERE YOU THINKING SOMEONE PLEASE HELP THIS SHOULD BE SO MUCH EASIER FOR HIM IF ONLY HE DID THIS ONE THING OH THE HUMANITY.

I feel a little better now. Carry on guys.

Thank you for putting this into words. It's awesome to watch, because yeah, the game (and MMOs) are so involved that if you aren't intimately familiar with them already, they're super tough to get into without a guide. But holy crap is it painful at the same time.

I hope the next episode features @rorie as co-host. That'll be great.

@danryckert not getting that someone probably made that character specifically for this stream was great. Welcome to the Giant Bomb community, Dan!

Were you literally cringing?

I literally did when he released as they killed the boss so he didn't get credit. Mostly just felt bad for the rest of the group having to carry him.

I guess I'm the only one bothered by how giant Dan has the UI scaled? In a weird way it feels like playing a game with a really low FoV, if that makes any sense. Still having fun watching these regardless, just a minor gripe/something I noticed as a change from last week.

I typically view webpages at like 150% magnification, I'm with Dan in that game UI is way too tiny.

@asmo917: There are some tutorial tips when you start (if they don't show, check the options). The best thing would be to get into one of the capital cities, chat a bit and find a guild or someone willing to mentor you, that'd probably be the quickest way to learn "correctly" (as in, learning from someone with more up to date knowledge, nothing is really wrong, just people expect you to know more since the genre and game is so old now)

As someone who levels almost exclusively through dungeon grinding, watch Dan in his first instance was both hilarious and incredibly painful. At this level I tend to go with tough love, and eventually stop healing/taunting off people like that.

That said, he seems to have genuine enthusiasm for the game. Fundamentally though, MMOs are social games, and the progression is designed around that. Dan should join a guild and ask questions. In fact, we should get a GB guild together on this server.

Honest question for all the veteran WoW players: if I've enjoyed these videos and want to give the game a shot, how do I avoid making the same "mistakes" you complain about? Are there in-game tutorials Dan's ignoring? Should I seek out some external class guide?

As someone who's played WoW for years, you're going to make those mistakes. It's pretty much just a reality of the game. The vast majority of people who play WoW made those mistakes too. For your benefit, I would use reason when you gear yourself (Strength for Warrior and such, Dex to Rogues and Hunters and Intelligence for casters). But don't let the jerks intimidate you into thinking you're not allowed to make mistakes.

To me, the most fascinating part of this is learning about WoW as a game, and getting even more perplexed as to why people play so much of it. But it's not for me, I've known that for a very long time.

N'awww, that's so sweet that you were worried!

To all those who are clawing and shouting at their screens, and gnashing their teeth in impotent anguish at Dan's gameplay style, just remember: There was a time when you too were the new person on the block, flailing and drowning in a wash of mechanics and nuances, and bearing the churlish scorn of those who came before you. You might see this as a rite of passage, part of the cycle of life; I call it a chance to show some empathy and maybe not come across as a know-it-all.

When I played through Dark Souls for the first time, I refused to look up anything or let anyone tell me stuff that might help in unlocking its dense mysteries. I still think that's the best decision I could have made. I really feel like I got something out of learning and growing and adapting on my own. (My second playthrough, though, I looked everything up. I'm not a lunatic.) So... y'know, just sayin'.

I'm not saying that Dan has to play WoW like this. I'm just saying that maybe people derive joy from their playtime in ways that differ to yours. It's not a competition. We're all just having fun, right?

Ack, it's 3:30AM. Maybe I'm just tired and talking utter horsepoo.

You're being generous. Dan was PRESENT for one boss in that dungeon. It's painful to watch, but he's improved a lot over last week. I can only hope the improvement continues. That said, I don't think I learnt the concept of rotations before like level 50, I just hit buttons and hoped. It's probably the most important thing Dan could learn. After he learns to face the enemy he wants to attack.

I don't know how he didn't get yelled at in the dungeon.... that is part of the MMO experience.

And even if you have not played MMO's before, surely you just attack what others are attacking, that part was pretty cringe worthy.

Get someone who knows a bit more about the game, as much as it is fun to watch, I also want to strangle everything in frustration... but it's not that serious I know lol.

I'm trying to put myself in the mind frame of someone who has NEVER played an MMO but as someone who has played games, i find myself thinking "He should know that" alot.

I stopped playing before The Burning Crusade came out so there is so much content and new features that I haven't seen. Part of me really wants to get back into and check it out but the other part knows how utterly consumed by it I would be. I really want to play Dragon Age 3, Far Cry 4, and Sunset Overdrive later this year and some backlog 360 games before then. This would stop me from doing all those things and personally wouldn't be as rewarding as those others would.

It's definitely bringing back some good memories hearing the enemy sound effects and remembering certain bits of the geography. I may get into it again at some point but right now is not a good time.

Looks like they've made finding groups for dungeons and tracking quests a lot better.

I think Rorie should probably get in on the next episode and clear up any confusion Dan might still be having.

I'm also guessing that if he checks his mail he has probably been gifted the largest bags he can use and some pretty sweet gear.
