Jeff heads back to the island, but this time it's CYBER MADNESS...and Blood Dragons, they are there too.

I'm really torn. I absolutely love the core concept and a lot of the little touches but there are just these small lame aspects that kind of break it a bit. Specifically the 20-sided dice part that Jeff rightfully calls out. It just doesn't make sense. Is it just "because the 80s?" Like what relevance does that have to anything? The writing still seems as poor as it was in Far Cry 3 as well, which is a bummer. But the aesthetic is SO good. I just wish the tone was a little more consistent.

I think the developers have it right by putting subtitles in the video/display section. Subtitles are something you look at, they are apart of the game's UI. You don't listen to subtitles, having that option in audio makes zero sense to me.

Subtitles are not part of the UI. User-interface. The player never interacts with the subtitles, it's just simple text that can be displayed at the bottom of the screen. Button prompts and menus are UI. Though I guess you can still say that subtitles are part of the HUD.

Video is usually where the graphical settings are located. Not an ideal place to put subtitles in, but neither should be audio. Though I can understand the rationale for both decisions, subtitles and other text/HUD options should really be part of the gameplay menu. Plenty of room there and fits in the same category of all the other options.

@psychopenguin: Agreed 100%, was going to throw it in a steam wishlist when the crazy sales stuff start but when I saw that pre-ordering the game on steam gave you the soundtrack, went out & got it.

This looks pretty amazing. The hand shake from Predator in the intro made me laugh. Looking forward to sinking my teeth into this DLC. Don't make fun of d20's. I've got a 20-sided die. I've got Kitty Pryde and NIghtcrawler too, waiting there for me yes I do. Thanks for the quick look!

Posted by HatKing

The "out of place" helicopter thing was actually kind of a Predator reference, I believe.

I'm totally sold on this. I'm going to watch some 80's action films tonight to amp myself up.

This game is aiming to be dumb, and these guys are criticize it for being dumb -.-

I'll be getting this, it looks brilliant and also I didn't mind the loading screen text at all. I guess that will be down to people's preferences and all that.

Posted by roguehallow

Hey Brad, the song in the helicopter, and the line "I'm gonna have me some fun," are from Predator.

Edited by UberExplodey

cool homophobic macho bullshit in that intro.

Edited by FoxMulder

I can ignore the loading screen tips, the rest of it looks awesome. That tutorial was pretty funny...besides the die.

Posted by FreedomTown

This ql is garbage. Way too harsh. Maybe they think they are being "above the masses" by not saying how awesome it is, but it just comes off as a " too cool for school" vibe. This game is very funny, but you wouldn't tell from watching this.

Edited by RoninLoganX

the song during the helicopter scene isn't random, it's a reference to Predator.

Hey they nuked the Toronto skyline, those goddamned Montrealers.

This is certainly a far cry from the original game.

I want the Hotline Miami to this game's Retro City Rampage.

What? o_O
I find this difficult to understand.

Yep, I'm down, looks just the right amount of stupid,

Would be easier to swallow if it was 800 bucks though, but those days are over

Jesus, 800 bucks?!
Shit, man... I think I'm fine at 15.
I mean, it'd be easier to swallow if it was 10 bucks, but those days are over. ;P

I feel like Jeff is too cynical sometimes. IGN did a preview of this game about a month ago, and they laughed their asses off the entire time during the tutorial. The game isn't meant to be taken seriously; its self-awareness is its strength in my opinion - Jeff gets offended seemingly at the word "nerd" which is the entire point of the joke.

This was boring to watch, and it really shouldn't have been. I expect better of Giant Bomb. Rarely do you guys sap the fun out of something so...well, fun. But you did it here. I, for one, find the humor spot on and strong.

I love everything about this. I found the tutorial hilarious when I saw it on another video shortly before I watched this one.

@hermetic: I think it is just a difference in what Jeff finds funny. Jeff doesn't seem to particularly enjoy ironic humor and I think he has said as much elsewhere.

I feel like I got everything I wanted from the game out of this quick look. I don't love everything about it, but I'm glad this exists and really hope more games have DLC like this.

Yeh I feel that the GB guys do sometimes turn into the 'joke police', and scrutinise any hint of humour in everything to an unreasonable level. I don't necessarily find a lot of video games funny either, but I also don't feel the need to dictate to others why each joke does or doesn't work.

This looks like an entertainment product that would be greatly enhanced under the influence of illegal narcotics.

In fairness, the GB crew know all there is to know about thinking that you're funnier than you are so they're really the ideal videogame joke police.

9.5/10 subtle yet effective with just a hint of zing.

yup i'll be getting this. like stated in the video, i'll take stand alone dlc over map packs any day of the week.

I like 80's throwbacks but I really don't like how everything in the background is saturated in red, too much for my eyes to take.

Posted by kerse

I didn't like Far Cry 3 as much as everyone else, but this seems awesome. And I'll agree that those loading screen tooltips are awful, but they are loading screen tooltips so not a big deal.

They should just adopt standard DVD placement. Instead of calling it "Audio," call it "Audio and Setup" or something and put subtitles there.

@sooty: yea it is. i tried it out on my pc and it was a real letdown. It pretty much felt like a mod for FC3 :(

Edited by stryker1121

Did the guys have to make a comment for every tool-tip or quip they didn't find funny? Who cares about the 20-sided-die for that matter. The aesthetic and tone are more than enough for me, particularly at the price.

Does anyone know how this performs on PS3?

I didn't have any problems with vanilla Far Cry 3 for the 4 or 5 hours I played it. I think it's one of those situations where the console version isn't bad, the PC version just makes it look that way by comparison. I could be wrong though, like I said I only played a few hours.

I don't like the look of this game, visually speaking. The muddy red/brown haze is too dark and overbearing for my liking. Not enough neon, either.

Can this be the prequel to Far Cry 4. Can Far Cry 4 just be this setting, tone, visuals? I'm with Jeff though: don't be ashamed, go all out with the 80's theme, don't undercut yourself with tongue in cheek tone.

Man, they really went too far with the 4th wall stuff. That's a bummer.

Posted by Indiana_Jenkins

Maybe it's because I was only able to experience the 80's for only one year of my life, but those tool tips seemed fine. The tutorial joke was pretty good, but trying to get two jokes out of it may have been a mistake. And the game is way too dark.

Edited by DarkbeatDK

The hostages and the 20-sided die thing might be a bit much, but it's a callback to a time where being called a nerd was a bad thing. Even up until the late 90's, something like "using the internet" was considered nerdy.

This game looks fantastic. I think its difficult to review it, because just the mere fact Ubisoft went with this idea starts it out at 5 stars. Its a concept that i can see GB yearning for, wishing game companies would just do something crazy like this over typical DLC. And they do it here so i think its only downhill from there.

Purchased.

Some pretty sick animations going on in this game.

The line before the turret its Mac's line from Predator and so is the song "Lang Tall Sally" I love this game... I want its babies.

The only important question: Is there a cyborg Vaas?

Love the Terminator 2 references, especially the lever-action shotgun.

Edited by CH3BURASHKA

Brad needs to start a White House petition. I think they're required to respond at 100K signatures...

Edited by Sweetz

Said this before but like Jeff and Brad, between this and stuff like the Zodiac Tournament for Sleeping Dogs, I love this trend of using DLC (though I guess this isn't technically DLC) to do crazy one-off stuff. I hope these pan out well for the companies doing them.

@brad: The song during Far Cry 3's helicopter turret sequence is Ride of the Valkyries, and its inclusion was an homage to a famous scene in Apocalypse Now.

What an obnoxious video. Do you two actually like video games? You talk about how this game has "above it" moments but thats all I took away from watching you guys play. Christ.
