Looks impressive, I guess I should finish the witcher 2... I've re-started that game 4 times now -_-

one thing though, Was it me or was all the audio absolutely exhausting, there isn't a moment of silence, even when there's nothing going on, strings, choirs, people's chatter... by the end I sort of wanted it to just shut up.

It's pronounced "dike-stra", not "deek-stra", dammit.

Also, an openworld RPG where you go into a cave without a loading screen. Yay!

Well, this looks incredible! Hopefully the console versions don't lag behind too much (I'm just assuming this is the PC version).

@branthog: Just play through the second one, and power through it if possible. It's very doable, you just set to difficulty to easy and experience the story. I have faith you can do it! :D

Hard to tell anything about a game like this from a 30 minute chunk, but I'm really liking the atmosphere they're achieving here. It has a lot of menace to it, and I think it's much better realized than it was in the Witcher 2 (didn't play the original). Something about the music, creature design, and of course the beautiful art and texture work really drew me in. Looking forward to the final product, hope it turns out well.

That's some creepy character design on those ladies...and that music is still so good!

I kinda hope there'll be a "Previously" recap in the game, because my attempts at playing Witcher 1 & 2 have been pretty unsuccesfull so far...

I see people saying that they had a hard time getting in to the first two games quite often and I really don't understand why. They're both very different from each other from a gameplay perspective but man, they hooked the living crap out of me. I sat down and beat both of them on two consecutive weekends. I couldn't be more excited for the third one.

I do agree however on them adding some sort of recap to the beginning of the third game, since it has been a while since I finished the first two and I'd really like a quick refresher on the story (although there's always wikis and such that you could catch up on).

I'd suggest Telltales the walking dead and the wolf among us. Also, considering that they said that The witcher III has 36 endings, I doubt it's going to be your typical good/evil choices. As @oldirtybearon described it to me, it's grey and grey morality more than anything else.

But you're going to have to wonder if they are multiple endings like Chrono Trigger has multiple endings, or multiple endings like Dragon Age: Origins has multiple different paragraph of words during its epilogue.

Well lets hope for the best.

You'll excuse me if I don't have much confidence.

Considering the quality of the last game, I don't see why you wouldn't.

Actually, I would say Telltale games are some of the worst violators of this. I really enjoyed the first Walking Dead, but they flat out slow time and ask you to choose to save the hot chick or the nerdy guy. Whatever you choose is irrelevant, because as they admit all the choices you make only introduce small changes to certain points in your story but have no bearing on the overall story. There was even a choice they gave me where I made a mistake and chose the thing I did not mean to -- so I reloaded, wanting to save the character who died. Oops - she still died! Turned out there was no way for her not to die. So why give me the choices? Why throw in bullshit as if I had any player agency, when I have none?

Those are the sort of things that make me care almost nothing for a story. It's so trivial as to not matter, so I don't care about my choices. I want games to allow me to make potentially significant (to the game/story) choices, but not necessarily make them obvious to me at the time. Or to make significant points of the game hinge on many smaller choices I made over the course of a game (and not in a "you earned 47 points of good karma and 53 points of bad karma, so that means this bad karma event is going to happen" sort of way).

Admittedly, this increases the amount of production and development work for a game, but if you want to put out these kinds of experiences where players can have real impacts and make meaningful choices in a game where it feels legitimate, then that's an investment in production and time that needs to be made.

Extrapolating this further, it's also what turns me off of games that I absolutely love, like Civilization. I think a game's story and choices should be sufficiently robust and complex and numerous enough that some guy can't just throw together a walkthrough for the game telling you what to choose to get what desired result, before the game has officially launched. And I want to play games like Civilization without knowing that there is "one true way" to reach the fastest, most precise, crippling win by following a flow-chart or spreadsheet. It takes the life out of these games.

This is the sort of thing that makes game development far more complex than movies. Or, in the long term, will be far more complex. I don't know how we'll eventually get over it. Will there be some company that makes cool middleware that automagically figures out the plot points of your game and develops a lot of meaningful branching options and player choices and has a calculation system to build a world and results around player choices?

I can't imagine how that would work. But i also can't imagine how, with real human beings developing every aspect of a game and with limited resources, we will ever have more than "okay, we can afford to make these three endings that trigger based on these five choices the player is presented with throughout the game". Every meaningful choice and option would potentially open up exponential development.

I can definitely see the problem that you have but like you said, I don't think we can ever have game where you have such freedom. I choose to look at these choices as character arcs which I influence myself. The things I do, and the choices I make affect me as the player, aka the main protagonist. I'm not really talking about the are you good or evil kind of choices like in Infamous or Mass effect( I don't hate these options, but I'm okay with them), I am referring to choices that allow you to paint your character in what ever shade of grey you want. That's why I like Telltale games, sure it may not give you the ability to influence the story outside of key moments, but the things you do, whether minor in importance in the long run, still influence how the characters view you in the game. For example, In wolf among us, you can be a somewhat nice, polite Bigby who only really fights if he has too, or you can be an asshole and show Fabletown that your the big bad wolf. But contrary to what you may interpret from my statement, these are not your only choices, you can bad, good, or somewhere in between, doing what you think is right and influencing how certain characters view you. Same goes for the Walking Dead, choices like killing a man with a pitchfork has specific consequences which you need to deal with. What you do, not only influences you, but clementine as well, which is what makes the game so emotional. The way I see it, these choices, like for example saving A or B from the walkers are used as brushes to yet again color your main protagonist, because the presence of one character in another episode may alter things for you and the characters within the story. For instances, saving Ben from dying allows him to stand up to Kenny and tell him that he isn't the only one who suffered, which influences circumstances of Kenny's sacrifice and evolves him as a character even further.

That being said, I understand what you mean essentially, you want to impact the story in meaningful ways, like if you said a certain character, they should stay alive more than a single or two episodes.

@bybeach: No, Johnny (and a few other NPCs) had a definite West Country / Somerset accent, all of the Sisters had different Welsh accents, and there were a few other Northern English ones too. There were almost no Southern English accents (which are normally the go-to selection for games with non-US accents).

The localisation team at CD-Projekt Red are pretty top notch when choosing the right sound for each character depending on their background in the world. Christ even King Henselt and Saskia in The Witcher 2 have comparatively "posh" South Wales / Cardiff accents and they work really well.

Definitely. It was really strange how the ambient music kept going during cut scene dialog. Hopefully it's something that'll be addressed between now and release.

Other than that though, game looks incredible. Can't wait for February!

Wow, this all looks really great. It seems to play better than the last one, and it looks even better, while having no loading. And the designs of everyone, from Geralt's new face to Johnny's eyes and how disgusting the old crones are... It just looks very good and convincing in a way I didn't think "realistic looking" characters were during the last generation, not even for the Witcher 2. It'll be a while until I get myself a ps4 or even a new pc, but I'm looking forward to playing this.

Can't get enough of the stream effect on the fire spell.

Too bad 90% of this demo we already saw at E3/Gamescom/SDCC via the trailers they have shown to the public..only the last 10 minutes are actually new footage.

Even so..seeing this game downloaded from Gamersyde and in proper 1080p it's just glorious.

I'm so hyped for this game is insane.

No, knock that shit off. Those aren't fun game play choices to make in any sense of the word.

Yes they are. I want the choices to actual have consequences. I don't want it to be like Skyrim where you can do pretty much everything yet none of it means a thing.

Absolutely this! That's the point of The Witcher games, your decisions have true weight behind them and you have to at least think before acting. There's no "Good" or "Bad" there's just intuition and sometimes rolling the dice.

I got the first games on a steam sale a while back but I have not been able to get into them like I got into Dragon Age or Skyrim. I am not a huge fan of the protagonist and you cannot create your own character. Also the combat is not to my liking in either games. I want to love the games since I usually love RPG's but I cannot.

I'm really excited for this, I hope the quality matches the quantity with the game, because the Witcher 2 was rather small, but very well done. As for choices, I thought Witcher 2 exceeded all the Bioware games and their 'good and bad' aspects. A significant number of choices are not easy to make because there's no clear good/bad, or sometimes the paths simply branch and you need to decide what matters to you more.

This is more of a open world game then W2. They said the map is 20% bigger then Skyrim.

Could not agree less. This is why many people go to the Witcher franchise: choices that matter, and not in a way that is always apparent.

I have to say until this video I wasn't too excited for this game. The other entries in the franchise have had too many roadblocks for me to really love, but this looks to be hugely improved in every way. Even the combat looks to be at least tolerable. But if all the quests are that in-depth and interesting, I'm going to enjoy the hell out of this game. The quality of the writing and designs and the facial animations and voice acting was a half step below a good GoT episode.

My only issue is that the visuals aren't quite as impressive as a lot of the screenshots we've seen, particular the environments in the distance. And while some of the fog looks really nice, there's also that awful blue simple cheap fog that looks ridiculous and looks like a holdover from Witcher 2. That first area just didn't really impress me, visually. I have to wonder if this is the PC version we're seeing here or if the settings were toned down for performance or something.

The characters, faces, and hair and stuff all looked great but the first environment looked pretty much on par with Witcher 2. Maybe not even that.

@jarmahead: Most games in which the player make "choices" really pull their punches, and lack any real consequence for those decisions. I agree with you that it's great that the Witcher franchise has meaningful player choices.

I feel like he made the wrong choice when it came to that heart thingy, I wouldn't have trusted it, but I would have at LEAST heard it out. Still, FANTASTIC gameplay demo, makes me want to play the game so badly. It feels like a crime that I'm getting 20% off of it.

You do get to really like Geralt, at least I did. The combat is challenging. You have to actually think about what you are going to do, a lot more than say Skyrim or Dragon Age. The Witcher 2's world and characters were absolutely fantastic, especially after the initial town. Also depending on what choice(s) you made. I would highly recommend giving the Witcher 2 another chance. If you like RPGs, I have no doubt once you start to understand Geralt and the combat, you'll love it like so many others!
