" I still haven't even finished "The Signal". Played and loved Alan Wake, but it's not the kind of game I want more of. The story was confusing (to me) and some of the gameplay parts didn't make sense at all. Why do I have to collect those thermos again? Why can't I access all the story information if I'm not playing it on hard? Just two of the things I didn't really like.   I also think the first DLC was released too late. It should have come out three weeks after the game was released. I would probably have cared about it if it were released earlier. :-( "
Was it really that hard to understand? I understand most of it, there are some untied plot lines for sure and the thermos are just collectibles. Sounds like you're looking too much into the game. "
I tend to agree with Afroman, although I didn't find the story all that confusing. I did finish The Signal, but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for (combat-heavy content). Alan Wake was one of my favorite games this year, but I don't want to play it on hard to collect more pages, because I didn't love the combat. It was OK, but it got kind of tired after a while. I don't mind collectibles, but why not give you some kind of bonus for collecting every 10 thermoses or something? Maybe some extra features, an additional story cutscene - anything! In such a story based game, I'd prefer that collectibles do something to give you some more story elements.

Like Afroman said, the biggest problem with most DLC is that it doesn't come out soon enough after the game is released. I think Dragon Age did DLC a little better, releasing it on a a fairly continuing basis. With most single player games, by the time the DLC comes out (I'm excluding multiplayer-focused games releasing map packs) I've nearly forgotten how to play the game.

Bioshock 2 was one of the worst examples of this. I have no idea why they pushed the multiplayer aspect of that game so hard, because I can't imagine that most people who played Bioshock thought that the game's biggest flaw was that it didn't feature multiplayer combat. The first 4 DLC packs were entirely multiplayer focused and the 5th was focused on the most irritating part of the game, protecting Little Sisters while they're gathering ADAM. The first REAL single player DLC (Minerva's Den) was released more than 6 months after the retail release of the game!

Look, I have no real problem with developers trying to make an extra buck or two, but all of the poor DLC release schedules do nothing but piss off people who bought the game on Day 1. I wish they'd just release Collector's Versions of games with the DLC already on them so I can play all of it right away. I know there are some developers that keep producing DLC depending on how well the game and the first pieces of DLC sell, but there needs to be a better way.

@captroy: I agree 100%. Sometimes game dlc is more of an afterthought that loses the player's attention if released months after the original game. If the dlc is going to take that long, why not just include it in the sequel or package it with the game and hold back the release date for a couple of months. But for now I wonder if this new Alan Wake dlc will have double the energizer batteries and verizon cell phones.

@captroy: Snap was the one who talked about the DLC coming late. I do agree with that point. The time between the release of that game and the signal is ridiculous. I don't believe it should be included with the game since most DLC usually acts as a way to keep you holding onto your game and not selling. Perhaps 2-3 weeks after launch would be great to put this out. Borderlands did a great thing with its DLC releases and Fallout 3 which did a monthly release. Also ya, collecting thermos constantly is tedious, it's only for few achievements, it should have unlocked game videos or something.

@Afroman269: Sorry, Afroman - I missed @snap at the top of the quote. I just bought Minerva's Den and all of the Mass Effect 2 DLC I never played, but I'm fearing the learning curve getting back into ME2.

@Niccoles: God, I hope not. The only time I got seriously angry was when I was escaping the lodge and watching the TV and realized I'd just been forced to watch ads. They ought to be PAYING ME to have to put up with that kind of crap.

I wish I had a good solution for the DLC problem. It just seems to me that it punishes people who buy games on Day 1. Maybe I should just wait 6 months, buy the game at a reduced price and buy the DLC for what I would have paid for the full game when it came out. It seems like a stupid business plan for the publishers, but it's better than getting punished for showing faith in a franchise right off the bat.

Super pumped for this, I am a bit surprised that people are so annoyed by the Verizon and energizer batteries.

If all the games feature dialogue like The Signal (just finished the QL), I'm not interested. I almost laughed listening to Alan's monologues. Almost. I mean, I'm sorry, but absolutely no one talks like that, or even writes like that, because it'd sound ridiculous, and nobody would listen/read it.

@example1013: the games are heavy on the immersion factor so it's not like you're just getting lines delivered to you straight.

Well I certainly didn't hate The Signal as much as most people seem to. Having said that though, if it's just more combat and even more flashlight-ing things into exsistance through yet another nightmare sequence, then I'm just playing The Signal again but paying for it this time.

It was interesting....but not essential.

@Jethuty: Please don't insult me. First of all, age has nothing to do with it. I probably read more books before I was 15 than most people will read before they're 40. I know who Stephen King is (who doesn't?). I don't like horror, so I've never really picked up any of his books. I did read the first chapter of one, though (The Cell, I think), and I don't remember it sounding like that.

I guess I'll retract part of my statement due to ignorance on the topic, though. I can't say that no one writes like that. I can say that no one talks like that, though. and that's what really matters.

@commandercup: I think the problem for me is just that it sounds like they're trying too hard to sound literary and cultured, when no one really sounds like that.  It'd probably break immersion for me, because it's not really believable.

Oh no... More point-your-flashlight-on-the-words-gameplay, that's probably the most uninteresting mechanic in this game... Anyway... Looks good. I'm a sucker for Alan Wake so I'll probably end up buying this on release day. Let's just hope its easier than "The Signal DLC", some parts of it was crazy hard!

The writing is straight out of 80's/90's horror films and books, especially King's stuff like The Dark Half, and it works well in this game. If you don't know that as a point of reference you just sound ignorant trying to critique it.

@DostoyevskysShamblingCorpse: It's my fault for stating an opinion as fact. Obviously, it sounds a certain way that's offputting to me, because I'm not used to it, and I probably shouldn't have made such sweeping statements.

The Writer was some great DLC. Literally the only reason that truly warrants me having an XBOX.

I know it's many moons later, but they have announced that Alan Wake is finally going to be released for PC this year, if that helps.

The Writer was so good!

If Remedy doesn't continue with Alan Wake, I will cut them.
