Anyone who thinks this trailer was made as a reaction to the "it would be difficult to make female assassin's" debacle clearly has no idea how long it takes to make these CG trailers. They would have started working on this months ago...

The spelling of the main character's name in this game annoys me. Should be Arnaud, surely? Arno is an Italian river. :(

“The spelling of Arno, A-R-N-O, is an older French/Germanic, I believe Frankish variation, of the name. It’s not as common as Arnaud but you still see it occasionally. It comes back to Arno’s family history. His family is a very old one and they’ve been Assassins for a very long time so we wanted to give him a slightly more antiquated name. Also, the phonetic spelling makes it easier to pronounce.

Source

Surely they don't mean to say their target audience would struggle to pronounce Arnaud ?

So Ubioft's mea culpa for not including a female protagonist is a trailer in which she's a damsel in distress? Good lord, there's no saving these guys.

I'm grateful that not too many people here made the same stupid comment about animating a woman in this game. So far nobody whining about her being damseled - I haven't checked Polygon yet.

@liquidprince: Connor's Birth Name Ratonhnhaké:ton, is an actual name given to UBI by the mohawk tribe. It's translation meaning "a scratched life". Connor means "hound-lover". His Grandpa, Edward, name means "wealth" or "fortune".

All of their names are specifically picked, most having to do with birds!

So much truth. It's so unlikely, but I'm just gonna pretend she was a playable character all along and Ubisoft was just sitting back and laughing at everyone this whole time. I can dream, can't I?

I feel like everyone seems to be forgetting that all the main characters in Assassin's Creed games, minus Edward and Connor, have names that translate to eagle. Altair in Arabic, Ezio in Italian, and now Arno in German. Connor's Mohawk name translated to something like "free spirit" or "spirit clawer" or something.

Anyways, this trailer was pretty badass. Music was oddly fitting.

I don't get the Ubi-hatin'. They know why they can't make the main character into a lady and you know it too. They're a huge company, they can't just admit "female protagonists sell 40% less than a male protagonist". And here I am not giving a shit, as long as they try to tell a good story for once. An assassin fighting alongside/falling in love with a Templar? Sounds cool (even if AC1 kind of did that already) All the AC games had the bits and pieces of a great story but end up being incoherent messes all the time.

A lot of people poking fun at this trailer. But as someone who's part of the "hardcore" AC community. This trailer is a big fucking deal right now.

This trailer is at times, shot for shot, the same as the original AC trailer, featuring Altair assassinating during a public execution. HC assassins fans love that UBi is going back to their roots.

It also confirms that Arno has made allies with a templar, a possible love interest. Altair had a similar story where he fell in love with one of his targets, Maria Thorpe, and turned her to the assassin's. An alliance or truce between the warring factions has been hinted at and somewhat attempted throughout AC, but never fully realized, it could be a major plot point for the whole series.

Anyways, just thought the GB community would appreciate an analysis from someone inside the Hardcore fanbase.

P.S. The books are rubbish, but a lot of people, including myself, enjoy them. The older books are just retellings of the games, but the recent ones expand on the universe.

And people continue to flock to this game to sound off as if they know how games are made...

All predictable internet raving aside, this game interests me and I'm excited to see how it turns out.

Actually most of it comes from an animator who worked on AC and Mass Effect games saying how ridiculous Ubi's claims were. The real defense is that each player in co-op just plays / sees themselves as Arno. Though there is no excuse for all the British accents all over the game.

How does assassin's creed manage to be one of the most promising but worst games ever created? I could probably go on a diatribe as I have played all of the games and been completely underwhelmed. Do not get me wrong - we are completely ignoring that assassin's creed 4 black flag is an assassin's creed game. We are also ignoring the fact that 40-50% of assassin's creed 4 black flag was abhorrent (THE ASSASSINS CREED ELEMENTS) .

I bought the first game, I bought the second game, I skipped the third game, and I bought the fourth game. The first game was majestic and gorgeous and it was like wow I don't have a intrusive UI and I can see super far and this game really shows the system's strengths but then you get to the town and the entire thing goes to shit. The first thing that happened to me was I was riding my horse into a town and a guard was like "HEEEYYYYY let us not ride that horse, you are playing assassin's creed after all" as he slapped a no-fun-allowed sticker on me. I continued traversing the world, climbing towers, and granted I got past maybe 2 towns at the most but it felt like there was some sort of demon eating all the fun straight out of the game. My eyes went blank and I don't remember any more of the experience of that game.

Assassin's Creed 2 was bought for me as some sort of gift. I also was given Uncharted 2 at the same time and well I don't know how to break it to you but there is no level of relevance between those two titles. I played through Uncharted 2 in literally one 6-8 hour sitting. I then fired up Assassin's Creed 2 and I absolutely loved buying things and building up my base but wow the combat was awful, and no surprise that the rest of the game was obnoxious climbing (not good controls) and picking up useless collectible items. Some of the worst offenses video games can have are essentially items with no redeeming reward (or at least progression towards a reward) that makes collecting 50-100 of them POSSIBLY have some sort of "reward" asinine. As an adult time is a lot more valuable of a commodity so I was finding that the majority of both of the games were a waste of time. The other offense besides useless rewards/collectibles is not good controls - a game can be generally bad but if the controls suck and the combat is not enjoyable why continue? I don't believe the story line is worth any mention, which is a completely different topic for a completely different day (I think telephone was played during the meeting for the "over arcing" story here and got grossly turned into this atrocity of a plot). Long story short - I enjoyed building up my base but once that was done I had to play Assassin's Creed 2. There were much better games to play as evidenced by the fact I purchased Uncharted 2 the same day. I also have been a computer gamer my entire life so had much better selections for games so I forgot about Assassin's Creed.

I didn't play revelations and I never got a chance to play what I have heard is the wonderful brotherhood. Assassin's Creed 3 looked amazing from all the videos I had seen. I am from a snowy place and it brought me back to much of my childhood watching people run around in the snow and having a good time. I loved the running from the trees and the archery of the deer! Amazing. I can't wait to play this game. I let the game come out and I Read the reviews. I skipped it. I saw the quick look here and didn't feel it had much going for it. I watched some other reviews and decided to just skip it.

Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag came out and it was the same time I built a new computer. I actually built a computer just because of Black Flag being the best looking game at the time (and still kinda is, game looks amazing!). When I had built the computer all I did was play Black Flag at first. I got to about 27%, and do you know why? It was still an Assassin's Creed game. I place a lot of emphasis on combat in video games and unfortunately this series has always just been a huge let down. Even the ship combat felt repetitive. I just can not stand the melee combat and also the reactionary combat is not as fun as something where I get to choose my attacks and no one ripostes/parries/does some lame combat mechanic. I am hoping they let you play a female character from bell to bell but it seems like there are going to be multiple characters so there won't be as much emphasis on this one.

Ok, reasons are good. It was really bugging me, and considering that the Arno flows through Florence, Italy, I kept thinking maybe it was some reference/connection to Ezio.

@bluefroman: Yes. It took many, many, many more person hours to animate a female character in a cloak, which is why it wasn't included in the original announcement. Twice as much (no!) three times as much time.

What a jarring edit in the music leading into the final shot. Wonder if the trailer originally ended with the slash and given recent events they went "oh shit, we should not end the trailer like this." (Or it's just an unusually horrible cut.)

@mikaelboogart: From the press release:

"Elise will also be featured in a new paperback, also titled “Assassin’s Creed Unity,” by Oliver Bowden from Penguin Random House. The story examines an era when the divide between the rich and poor is at its most extreme, and a nation is tearing itself apart. Told from Elise’s perspective, “Assassin’s Creed Unity” follows her and Arno as they are drawn into the centuries-old battle between the Assassins and Templars. In a world with dangers more deadly than they could ever have imagined, they must fight to avenge all they have lost. “Assassin’s Creed Unity” builds on Bowden’s past Assassin’s Creed novels with millions sold to-date."

I feel like we need a dramatic reading of this on Bombing in the AM, much like Jeff's much loved reading of the Perfect Dark: Initial Vector.

@krabboss: Let's not get nuts, now. Such a thing would cost Ubisoft billions! I mean, how many people do you think are working on this game? Thousands?!

LoL it's almost like, a thousand people sit in front of one computer and all animate a single file simultaneously! Thats how it works right?

EDIT: That aside, this is yet another great trailer. Revelations for all it's faults was a decent game but it had probably the best CGI trailer out of the entire franchise. Also call me a sucker for cheesy romance but a relationship between an assassin and a templar seems like a pretty cool idea to me.
