Double dipping on this game, PC and 360.  I just love it and the first one will forever remain in my library.

@Meatsim:@ForestWarrier: It's how EA has decided to combat people buying used copies. It's not like they are asking you to buy this DLC, it's free for everyone who buys the game. If it was paid i would be right along with you guys.

Depends - if it's free then it wouldn't do that at all. Might just have been maps that they couldn't polish up in time to put on the disc

Either that or its EA's code in the box to ward off second hand resales strategy...

@ForestWarrier: it's free... so... split between people who are: 1. Not too lazy and 2. Are too lazy to download the maps?

@Meatsim:
i guess these maps weren't finished before the discs had to go to press, and then we get them for free on day 1, not a problem for anyone who's going to be playing online anyways!

edit: wow, you guys type fast... 2 responses in the time it took me to type... :(

They are going the same route as Bioware with free DLC for people who buy the game new. I completely support this strategy.

You do know EA bought Bio-ware a long time ago right? Bio-ware is just a studio in the EA company; EA isn't copying them, they are doing what EA tells them to do because they own them.

I hate it when they split the user base. However, I'm getting the PC version (already have it preordered) so it doesn't really affect me. Pirates won't be able to play on the official servers and there is practically no used-game market except for Ebay.

TO CLARIFY
IT IS FREE DLC  FOR PEOPLE WHO BUY THE GAME

PC GAMERS GET IT FREE AS A PATCH

Its so people who get a preowned copy ,rent or borrow the game have to pay.
DICE get money from preowned games, and it limits piracy.
I welcome it TBH. Dice could have more money from me just because they have dedi servers on the PC

You do know EA bought Bio-ware a long time ago right? Bio-ware is just a studio in the EA company; EA isn't copying them, they are doing what EA tells them to do because they own them. "

You know that the Bioware doctors are bigwigs now at EA? One of them is like the VP and the other is the head of the RPG wing of EA.

Ray Muzyka is the General Manager and CEO at BioWare Corp as well as a Senior Vice President and Group General Manager of the RPG/MMO Group (comprising BioWare and Mythic Entertainment) at BioWare's parent company Electronic Arts

Gregory P. Zeschuk is a VP at BioWare Corp. and Electronic Arts.

Guess what - it shows. The whole VIP storefront deal is actually pretty fair to the paying customer, as well as Electronic Arts and the developers.

First - the Day 1 DLC is gonna be free. Second - a DICE producer said, all map packs will be free. EA and DICE don't want to split up the community. Third - paid DLC will most likely be completely new game modes and cosmetic stuff like custom player skins.

It's all good. A constant stream of maps for free - as long as you bought a new copy of the game. The price of admission to the VIP storefront for second hand buyers is more than fair.  It's a shame that Gamestop & Co. are the only ones getting paid for resales of games. Now, at least the publisher and devs have a chance to get their cut. Chances are, EA's new approach to DLC will increase the longevity and support of all suitable games.

For once, EA has devised a business scheme based on mutual respect and not on fucking the paying customers with prohibitive DRM and the likes. Be glad.

Indeed. I just wish that someone would let Ubisoft in on this radical and unheard of new way of thinking.

My problem with this, as opposed to the Mass Effect 2 Cerberus Network, is that multiplayer is a big part of the what makes BFBC2.  You can play ME2 without the DLC and still have a great experience, but not getting entire multiplayer maps that are already on the disc seems pretty messed up to me.  You should be rewarded for buying a game new, not punished for purchasing it used.  A little more carrot and a lot less stick will make customers much happier, trust me.

Yeah, I agree. EA is doing a great job of fighting against the used game market without alienating any of their fans. Of course, people will still complain.

Yeah I know, I probably should've said EA is doing the same for Battlefield as they did for Bioware. Glad to see it because EA was definitely the most consumer unfriendly major publisher of the 2000's IMO. It seems they have passed the torch to Ubisoft now xD

I agree that it being multiplayer somewhat punishes used buyers, but buying it used SERIOUSLY hurts the developer and the publisher. They're a business and they need their cut. The price of the "dlc" is about the same as their cut anyways. Basically, it's a small price to support the devs so we can a)continue to enjoy BC2 for an extended period of time (they will shut down the servers of less successful games) and b) so we can HAVE another battlefield at all!

Yes, punished for buying it used.  That is the point.  They don't want you to buy it used because it hurts sales.  Buying new or used is not a big deal to begin with, the difference is like $5, but they just want you to think about those bonus maps the next time you're at gamestop looking to buy their game.

If you care about games, you'd care that your money actually goes to the game companies responsible for your games, so with that in mind you should want to buy games new, whether there are bonus maps or not.

Most people who buy a AAA game like BFBC2 are going to keep it, for at the very least, a few weeks/months.  I can't see the benefits being too great for EA.

Then again, every $ counts these days.
Maps
Port Valdez
Isla Inocentes
Arica Harbor
Panama Canal
Valparaiso
Atacama Desert
Laguna Presa
White Pass
Laguna Alta (Day One DLC)
Nelson Bay  (Day One DLC)

With two new maps coming soon after, also free, this is spiffing.

The thing is that these maps AREN'T on the disc. The game went 'gold' and was shipped off for manufacturing and packaging a month or so ago. These maps are what the team was still working on by the deadline and instead of pushing back the release, they give us day-one patch and DLC.

The fact that you can't get these maps for free without buying new is just icing on the cake. I fully support this method because used games are no better than piracy (for something you can still buy -- it's a completely different matter if the game is no longer in production or available digitally).

Then that is messed up. I don't mind console games adopting a cd-key type model like PC games have done for like decades, but restricting what the actual paying customer can access when it's already right there is shitty.

EA did this DLC model with Mass Effect 2 by making the Cerberus Network free to owners of new copies. I personally think it's a good way of influencing people to buy new instead of used. It's effective and doesn't quite tread over the line of dickhood like SecuRom or day-one paid DLC do.

I agree that its not a bad thing to do but it hasn't stopped pirates from getting ALL of the preorder bonus and currant dlc for ME2. It just means the people who pay 55 bucks for it @ gamestop used end up spending MORE money in the long run.

Wow, some people are super r-word.org, what's the difference does it make if this free dlc is on the disk or not when you need an internet connection to use it in the first place? only a pirate would complain about any of this. I think Cerberus is awesome and I'm happy EA has decided to use it in all of their games.

I fully endorse this action, Day 1 purchase.
Its a good idea, like having the cerberus network it makes me not want to trade it in, because you never know what goodies bioware are going to add, plus it makes you want to buy it new, overall a good step forward for the industry to combat used games.
