One thing that keeps popping up in my head is how my fellow countrymen can be so awesome at making great games yet seem to inevitably fail at pronouncing shit in english. What the hell.

On another note, the game is goddamn sweet. I can barely wait for some proper 64 player action.

I still feel sorry for those of you who have to use all of that browser and alt-tab stuff.

Anyone still holding out for BF3 on Steam?

This Battlelog & alt tabbing stuff is the most fun PC-gaming functionality i've used in years.. Your'e missing out.

Sorry, I was still under the impression that quite a few PC gamers thought Battlelog was not as great as it could be.

It's good to hear that it's not too shabby after all.

It has its shortcomings, mainly the chat/party system, otherwise it's really solid and I actually enjoy alt-tabbing out of the game and doing stuff on Battlelog then jumping back in. It's an instant process.

@TiE23: Sure, we'll really see if it all works fine when the retail game comes out. I have no issues with a browser-based interface, especially since BF's server browsers always have been a little lacking before and something new might be a good idea. I don't throw insane amounts of money at keeping my machine up to date at all times though, just enough to play games I want in an adequate fashion. Anything that makes that unneccessarily complicated because of corporate bullshit that doesn't interest me in the slightest (social network shit, Online store & DRM nonsense) is potentially bad. But I'm still looking forward to the game a lot - that's were the love/ hate/ paranoia thing comes from ;)

@Baal_Sagoth: You know, I didn't like the idea of running Origin at all times, I've always been the kind of dude trying to minimize resource usage. But then one day when I was bored I streamed myself playing Dirt 3 in windowed mode, while listening to music, while looking at Nokia Ovi 3D maps, while having Google Earth spin around, while playing a 1080p 12mbps rip of Avatar, having One Note open, Windows Word 2010 open, MS Visual Studio open with a project, and Photoshop CS5 with a 129mb PSD file open all open at the same time while streaming to Justin.TV... and my frame rate in Dirt 3 was still around 30fps with nearly max settings.

So what's the point of this story? Oh, that I love how bad-ass my computer is (it's not the fastest in the world at all, but I fucking love it). And that 0% CPU use and a few dozen MB of RAM is nothing to cry about.

Hopefully the server browser part will be functional and the rest of this "social network" bullshit will be irrelevant to the core experience. None of this looks like it's going to be any good even without considering that you'll also have to run fucking Origin at all times. Damn, I hope this game will be any good - it has been too good a series to be thrown to the dogs :|

Seems like EA and DICE are spending more time trying to come up with distribution and social platforms than they are trying to make games better.

The stats are great. Wish they'd spent that much time making a functional in-game menu system though. Key bindings are busted, can't access any in-game menus at the most useful time (when you're dead waiting to respawn), etc. The ergonomics are horrendous.

The social aspects are mostly irrelevant for most of us. In fact, I can't think of anyone over college age who would want their Battlefield 3 achievements broadcast to their Facebook page/feed.

The party system being in the pre-game browser currently blows. Maybe they'll figure out how to actually reserve the slots properly so your entire party can successfully drop into a server together and wind up in the same squads.

Or better yet, give us back the ability to adjust the squads in-game like in BC2 so we can get all our friends into proper squads.

I'm loving that you don't have to be in game to find a server and group up. It's so nice to not have to alt-tab all the time. The battlelog is pretty buggy right now, but that'll surely be fixed. I'll probably not use the social networking stuff but at the same time they don't get in the way so they might as well be there.

Battlelog is awesome. As a format, that's how MP-centric games should be handled. It's already great and it will get better over time. Battlefield is Battlelog from now on out. Beats regular ass in-game menus easily.

Battlelog is a fucking disaster for community management.

100 people per platoon, max

5 platoons per person, max

No group/platoon events

No group/platoon chat

No platoon join game features

Otherwise it is very good!

It seems to work OK, for now. What it will turn into in the near future is what keeps me awake at night; pacing up and down the room, sweating, stopping occasionally to contemplate the futility of it all. And, finally, dropping to my knees, and letting out an umerciful howl of anguish at the moon... now emblazoned with the EA logo.

Because the fuckers will ruin anything for the sake of marketing.

As a console player, I don't really have to worry about the whole game-launching aspect of it. However, I am really digging the stat-tracking aspect.

Everything is nice and clear, the information is presented nicely and it's great to see how close I am getting to new unlocks, of which there are many.

Forward thinking if you ask me, browsers are soley designed to pull and display data from around the web. The usual in-game method of displaying stats and servers is basically a built in browser anyway, only not nearly as well engineered.

So why not leave it to Mozilla and Chrome? I've had a few hiccups, but mostly like the direction their going so far.

Also, ITS A FUCKING BETA.

I always have to reload the whole page to see any changes. Joining a game from the battlelog works maybe 20% of the times. If I find a server that seems to have a spot it seems to be entirely random if starting the game actually works. It worked once for me yesterday, after that I tried to join another server and was stuck in the "connecting" loop for every server I tried. Joining a game as a group doesnt work at all, I never ever successfully was able to join a game with a group. One of us clicks the join button and ... nothing.

As I said: I don't hate the idea but atm. it seems they still have a bunch of work ahead of them to make this thing useable.

I had the same problem with the eternal joining server loop. My installation folder for BF3 had the word bèta in it (installer does this by default). Operating systems have a huge amount of trouble with letters like "è". After changing the è to a regular e and changing the registry using Regedit, the game has been working fine.

Give it a try

Battlelog is a terrible idea. I have to install origin (which somehow restarted my computer without telling me), Download Battlefield 3 Beta and install it; get prompted to download and install another program to make it work from a browser; cruise to a game from the browser, join the game; Options arent right so I have to adjust them; I hit Esc for options but as soon as a dude shoots me it pulls me out to the death screen. (repeat this for the next 5 times as I need my options right)

RUNNING THIS GAME IS FRUSTRATING.

Plus all of the stuff that made Bad Company 2 fun isn't really there. (in multiplayer) Last thing I want to hear is some retard telling me how the franchise is different from the main run of games. I know that. But this game practically only has graphics going for it in my opinion. Plus they should've made downloading and installing 3 separate apps, just to get ONE thing running, optional. They should've made an in-game menu. This is a horrible idea and doesn't make installing the game easy.

It's actually a very nice service (I know, I'm as shocked as you are). It makes browsing through your stats and connecting to servers a bit easier and A LOT faster than in previous Battlefield titles.

People flipping out about battlelog are crazy. With every other game, you have to launch the game .exe, load through the splash screens, just to get into a match or look at your stats, or see what your friends are up to. With battlelog I can check what my buddies are up to and browse stats and all that fun social stuff from any computer, and thats pretty awesome. Yeah its sorta facebook-y or whatever, but there's nothing inherently wrong about being able to see what your friends are up to, especially when its filtered to only have friends who like battlefield.

Although you make good points, the entire problem that I have with this is that it's being shoved down our throats. This should be an optional, secondary way to run the game and join servers.

If the service Battlelog provides is good, people will use it. Now they are artificially forcing people to use their weird new idea.

And lets not forget, some people can't afford to run Origin, a browser and play a game at the same time! Could someone with a slower computer close the browser and still play?

For Pete's sake, you can't even change any options unless you are in a game, alive. I hope they'll fix that before it's out.

Before I played the Beta I was planning on getting BF3 my PC but after playing the Beta on both PC and PS3 I'm torn about what to buy it for. I do like the nicer graphics on the PC but I am not sure if it worth the inconvenience of having to launch a game from a web browser, having a social network forced on me, and not having it run on Steam. It's not a "special treat" or whatever that guy said, it's an extra hassle. On PS3 it looks fine and is simple and the way I am used to seeing games. Not that all change is bad but the way this is going I am not a fan of.

After using battlelog over the past couple days I can safely say it is much faster than anything else I've used before. Once you've activated the game through Origin, you never need to have it open to boot up the game. Just go to battlelog, look for servers and you're in. Not only that, you can see they're going to support multiple games in the future so at some point you'll be able to check the servers for several games in seconds.

Most of the whining seems to stem from the fact that it's different. It is very tedious just how whiny the gaming community is. The slightest thing sends them into a fit of rage.

Now hold on, the idea of the Battlelog replacing the main menu is actually a smart thing in my book. Instead of hitting the game exe, you just go to your bookmark. Instead of a main menu loading up with a half-dozen DICE, EA, video card logo, game logo fade-ins and fade-outs, you just use a website instead, which in the end does the same exact thing as a menu did.

As for the functionality, it hasn't changed much since the Alpha, and it's a Beta so there are rough patches with bad connections and out-of-date information on servers. I mean, it's kind of crazy that people harp so much, when if it was just a simple menu system in the game that got to the same end; connection issues and all, people wouldn't really bring it up in complaints.

It's different, yes. It's initially off putting, yes. It's buggy, yes-- it's a friggin' beta. But does it do what you want? Pretty much yeah. Sure, it's doubtful that all of the problems will be ironed out by release, but by having Battlelog they don't need to release 400mb patches every 4 weeks just to fix server browser issues, they just update the website.

DICE just realized that making a stat menu and friends list in the game and a stat website as well would just be a roundabout way to delivering the same thing in two places. It's actually pretty clever and outside the box thinking on their part.

Oh, and Origin? You're god damn right I wish this thing was just in Steam and we didn't have to both with this second line of bullshit (seriously, I love Steam, I use it as my main chat client now, I don't even use AIM or MSN anymore). But Origin is mostly inoffensive as an application (except where it shows the sign-in dialogue on start-up like a dense motherfucker)... And the funny part is that with Battlelog, you don't even need to open Origin to play the game, just to leave it running.

Before you commit you owe it to yourself to check out the graphics on the PC version versus the console. If your rig can handle it the game looks amazing on PC. It's official. Today's consoles are falling behind.

Hm I like it, feels a bit like ASE and (the old) Gamespy did and it's a thousand times better than ingame server browsers, imho.
