So does anyone else feel like Randy Pitchford has lost a lot of weight in this video? That, or the recent Duke Nukem IP lawsuit has been keeping him up all night.

I'll probably check this out, but this looks too similar to 2, and with as much as I played of 2 I'm kinda burnt out on it...especially seeing as how this game has much of the same loot. As long as the loot system isn't as completely broken as it was in 2, I should still enjoy this just fine.

Also, Handsome Jack was an awesome fucking villain. You people are high.

I get a kick out the Borderlands games and their goofy little universe. So this should be good news. But I stopped the video as soon as Pitchford showed up. I just can't listen to him shill anything after he worked so hard to sing us the praises of junk like Duke Nukem and A:CM. And he's never really owned up to how bad they were. So I just don't trust the guy.

The reaction here seems incredibly negative... I wonder if that's a gb thing or a more general sentiment.

In other words: They didn't have enough money/hype to make the game they set up for Borderlands 3 to become.

Or Gearbox are making Borderlands 3 and this is just a game to fill the interim

Morderlands.

I'm here all week.

Didn't take long for that, did it? Well played!

I find Pitchford without glasses to be a little unsettling.

I feel as if this is going to be the "Batman Arkham Origins" of Borderlands games. Also, Destiny coming out makes me not really care much about this too.

I'm pretty much done with Borderlands after BL2. I couldn't bring myself to finish that hot pile of garbage. The fact Handsome Jack plays such a big role isn't helping matters. Literally one of the least funny, most annoying characters in a game that I can ever recall.

Wow, so much hate for Borderlands in here. Yeesh!

I enjoyed both games and can't wait for new classes, new mechanics and a new story. Not getting the Handsome Jack hate either. Is it just because the Giantbomb crew wasn't big on BL2? Jack was a fine villain with some great lines, so I have no issue with seeing more of him.

Speaking for myself I gave the game an honest shot and I found I really liked the gameplay and the banter between the BL1 cast but Handsome Jack was the most aggressively frustrating and annoying character to deal with say nothing of the plot they wrote around him. I went back to the quick look and they're slightly negative on Handsome Jack but don't spend much time on him. So for me, my hatred of Handsome Jack comes largely from my own heart.

I've had discussions with friends and it's kinda all over the place with that character, some didn't care, others liked him, I thought he was outright terrible and brought down the game for me. Still though I held out Borderlands as an open question but so far there's no indication they'll be abandoning the character that represents everything I didn't like about Borderlands 2.

Fair enough; people can have differing opinions. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Jack is the best character, but I felt he had his moments. For what it's worth, my favourite new character was either Slade or Ellie. The only character I really had an issue with was Tiny Tina. Sometimes I get the impression that for some people Tina is all they think of when remembering the tone/humor of BL2, when she isn't really an accurate example of the overall tone. What about Scooter's fantastic dialogue? Or Claptrap's birthday party? There's so much more than Tiny Tina.

@benpicko: That's a better name to be honest.

I've borrow both BL1 and BL2 off friends but never bought one.

Might actually get this. :) Really wish it was coming to Vita though... :/

Meh?

I liked Borderlands. I reallyliked Borderlands 2. But I was hoping for Borderlands 3. Bigger, better, more stuff. New systems and mechanics. It seems like this isn't that. This seems like an expansion to Borderlands 2 to me so far. I mean, Borderlands 2 now has 6 classes. You're going to start this one with 4 again? Borderlands 2 looked distinctly different from the first game. This just looks the exact same as BL2.

I don't know. I've been waiting for Borderlands 3 for a while, but I just imagaine it is being developed for current gen consoles while they try to have this alternate studio do a last gen one first.

So yeah... meh.

I just...that shirt...I mean....how does that happen? Also why does Captain Paisley bother rolling back the cuffs if he's just going to leave them at the wrist anyway? Or was that just to accentuate the hot polka dot contrast detailing inside?

Hot damn that is a dumb shirt. That is the BRO-est of Bro shirts I have ever seen. I mean Kenny Powers and that Jon guy from the reality show who had 8-tuplets and insisted on wearing Ed Hardy Tigers at all times would even rip on that shirt. The Fresh Prince of BelAir couldn't even have pulled off that shirt in 1992. Smash Mouth wouldn't even wear that shirt. Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri might be able to make it work, but he would have enough taste not to unleash it upon the world. It's like this guy came back from a future where everyone dresses like dickheads. Wow. WOW!! Gaaahhhhh that shirt is fucking terrible!! Oh wait nope I'm wrong it all makes sense because the left side is black and white and the right side is in colour. My bad guys, sorry for the outburst.

What were these two guys talking about anyway? I wouldn't mind more Borderlands in my life though...with all that jet-packin going on I wonder if there will be any Klaptrap Ttians involved..

... yes, the fact that they killed off the ONLY black character in the whole d*** game still irks me to this day.

Is it more telling about the game that its not on the new consoles or the new consoles not be able to get the new game developed for them?

Seems like they'll kind have missed the boat release on old gen.

Nah, it's not hard to piece everything together.

This is called Borderlands the Pre-Sequel. As we all know, numbers sell. Calling it Borderlands 3 would have been better. Why don't they? Because it's not. It's a filler title to give them some income before Borderlands 3 is finished, which will probably be in development right now for next gen consoles, but is still ~2-3 years off from release let's say.

Of course, I'm purely guessing at this, but it makes complete sense.

Seriously.

Yeah, that's pretty much all it takes to make me not care.

Handsome Jack was a terrible, unfunny character.

Unfortunately, I really love the gameplay of Borderlands, so I bet I will pick this up at some point, though it'll probably be long after it actually comes out, like I did with BL2.

At least it's not Tiny Tina focused.

Anthony Burch is a great writer and Borderlands 2 was (for the most part) really damn funny and well-written.

I completely disagree. The story was filled with sad cliches and one-note characters that didn't serve to do anything but push a hackneyed and boring story along. Not a single one of the main characters went through anything resembling an arc, and the climax of the story, where we learn more about Angel as a character, is punctuated by one of the most egregious offences of cutscene incompetence I've ever seen. of course, that's after the laziest and worst-foreshadowed twists has occurred.

I'm not bashing Burtch out of some dislike for Youtube comedians; in fact, I had no idea he was even a person who existed until well after I had beaten Borderlands 2. His own writing soured me on him, and I don't think I'm wrong to assume that Gearbox got Burtch on the cheap because he was little-known and had the same kind of "zaniness" that Borderlands is so well-known for. Unfortunately, his first outing into this universe was uninteresting, unfunny, and trite.

Pitchford needs to grab a cheap bottle of whiskey and take a quickie vacation on his old used car lot. True, there a just a few moldering wrecks left that no mark would ever buy, but it would bring back a sense of home to him. And He's done well, risen from stuffing gear boxes w/ sawdust to being the head of his very own video games company. And, he has put out a few good games, he has. The problem is he has aggressively fronted the bad ones also. Actually, that kind of makes me like him, he puts his face on things. But the damage to his rep!

Again I kind of like him, he doesn't protect himself if you look at it as over a period of time. He takes it front on. But he makes me nervous.

This doesn't strike me as the Borderlands game I want, I love them but I burn out(least in Borderlands 2) by the time the dlc comes out. Think I already posted in this thread.

Man, I didn't realize people hated Handsome Jack that much. I don't think he was a brilliant character or anything, but he made me chuckle a few times. He wasn't grating, and that's pretty high fucking praise for a character in Borderlands. I actually turned the voice setting down on subsequent playthroughs. I don't know if I'll play this, the structure of those games has never quite grabbed me like it does other people.

I want less story, less voice acting, better quests. Borderlands 2 they went too high production on it and it lost something along the way. Part of the greatness of the first game was the lack of bullshit exposition and cut scene watching that plagues so many other mainstream games these days.

Note to developers and PR people: using the phrase "full stand-alone experience" instantly red flags your whole pitch to me as we're taking too long on this dlc and we're putting it out on disc because we think maybe we can make a little more money that way okay but this is a real full game guys all the stuff sixty dollars.

I agree with all of this.

Disagree completely.

There is almost nothing I found funny about Borderlands 2. It felt like pandering most of the time, and most of the characters (Tina Tina especially) were obnoxious.

The game was fun regardless, but I don't understand how there are people who thought it was funny.

So it's more Borderlands...where we'll get annoyed by running out of oxygen because you think that's fun and interesting...and low gravity because we all just love floaty-as-fuck controls (which Borderlands already has enough of)...

...AND you decided to make Claptrap a playable character because fuck it why not?

I STILL haven't gotten past the first area of Borderlands 2. It is SOOOOO GODDAMN BORING!

I played so much of the original Borderlands that I got bored of B2 in about 3 hours, it just felt like the same game but with prettier skins. Having Randy Pitchford there to hype the game is like an incredibly enthusiastic trojan horse.

I have little interest in playing The Pre-Sequel, but for the people who will I hope they've done enough to change it up and give it some distance from the monotonous 'shoot guys who soak up damage while inane babble happens over head and every few hours you find an ok weapon' formula.

came into this comment section expecting hype but hot damn, apparently LOOOOOTS of people on GB either hate the series, hate it after BL2, or hate Handsome Jack. all that aside, im excited for more borderlands, and any series that likes to build upon its established worlds and characters is fine in my book

2-3 years seems a little high to me. Borderlands 1 came out in 2009, Borderlands 2 came out in 2012. I think there's a small chance they announce at E3 that Borderlands 3 is coming out by the end of this year, but assuming that doesn't happen, Borderlands 3 will almost certainly come out in 2015, and will actually be on the new consoles (unlike the pre-sequel).

This whole thing seems like a Batman: Arkham Origins/Batman: Arkham Knight situation.

@bisonhero: Of course they won't announce it at E3. You think they are going to announce the sequel to a game that isn't even released yet? That would be incredibly dumb.

It could come out in 2015. It doesn't have to. There is no reason for it to HAVE to come out in 2015. It could be 2016.

The only reason I said maybe this E3 is if they're doing something similar to Assassin's Creed, where they make one game for last gen (the Pre-Sequel) and one game for next gen (which the core of Gearbox is presumably working on), and the two games come out in a similar time frame. But like I said in my post, that seems like a small chance, as 2 years is a pretty short turnaround time, especially making a game for new hardware.

So yeah, it's possible they know Borderlands 3 won't be ready for even 2015, which is why they felt the need to put this Pre-Sequel out later in 2014 to tide people over who want a new Borderlands game.
