The broken mic is one of their old ones - they talk about the new mics they just got in, in the video.

Sounds like you guys already got some lavs but in the future check these guys out, they're pretty cheap but have the freq response of film standard COS-11s:

http://www.pro-sound.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PSS&Product_Code=SOSCTL-40black&Category_Code=

Also, Drew said you guys got sleeves for the mics? That SHOULD protect against most clothing/hair noise. Just try to make sure the diaphragm isn't exposed so nothing's touching it. As for taping to the body, try Dr. Scholl's Moleskin. Its made for covering blisters but it makes mounting lavs easier because it doesn't fall off at the first sign of sweat.

And if standing on mic cables is a problem...why not go wireless?

The way Brad broke the mic is the same way how I managed to break 4-5 headsets. I have Astro A40 now and it seems to be somewhat resilience, only made that mistake once. You might wonder how come this happens so often, it's because I usually move from my desktop to lay on my bed without taking off my headset when I watch movies or if I just want to listen to some music. If I'm going to the bathroom or getting something to drink, I always remove the headset first.

I've done this with laptops. :( the headset was fine but...

The ONLY justifiable excuse for destroying an expensive mic is that it smells like pepper.

Wow, I didn't even notice that. I like the idea that the CV people are just serious business about comic books, and just walk around the office frowning and shaking their heads at the hooligans goofing off around the office.

Since it is a corporation they have to jump through more hoops to get stuff done. This is why it is taking longer. Also keep in mind, since you are a premium member I'm going to assume you watched the last Radio Dave, that you know they lost a lot of their video producing equipment and the main thing they lost was their studio, which they said is still in the stages of being made. Basically they are starting over from scratch, that is what is happening and working within a much larger business than WM was is proving to slow down the rebuilding process. They have made allusions that the move to CBSi is somewhat like their startup in Sausalito.

I'm just regurtitating what they have said.

I remember the time my headphone cable caught on one of those metal arms at the entrance to a supermarket. The force of it was so great that they were ripped off of my head and out of the jack on my ipod (it was the early 2000's and I didn't own a cell yet). I had to do my weekly shopping with music only playing in my right ear... it was madness!

@Warmachine: Oddly enough, after about a decade of using ECM-77Bs I finally picked up some COS-11s. As far as wireless goes, if I had the budget for a nice studio base station I would probably go for it. Right now, we have a pair of great Sony field packs that (thankfully) haven't given us much trouble with interference. We use them for things like recording Dance Central and Happy Action Theater where folks have to spin and move a bunch.

If it's practical to use wired in most situations, I'd much prefer it over our current price range of wireless gear due to the possibility of static, signal noise, and battery loss after some crazy marathon stream. We mostly save our wireless gear for conventions where going wired is too much trouble and actually dangerous. Sadly, the floor of a crowded tech convention is where you'll probably spend the most time scanning for a clear channel.

Now...if we could hire a boom operator....

I know why it takes time, but it really bums me out that the GB guys seem to be getting the shaft. I don't understand how CBSi didn't have provisions for the new studio as soon as the buyout happened knowing that as a site that generates mainly video and audio they would be shooting themselves in the foot not getting them acclimated right away.

Vinny did just get his new TriCaster. Although I don't know which one he got, they all seem pretty nifty:

TriCaster STUDIO = $7,995.00

TriCaster 300 = $9,995.00

TriCaster 455 = $19,995.00

TriCaster 855 = $29,995.00

They are pretty pricey, but CBSi eventually got that shit for the crew. I imagine due to the time and effort of getting anything through corporate, Vinny thought he'd have a crack at fixing it himself, like a true craftsmen. Good on him for trying to fix something/learn how something is constructed/how to break something more. The more you know.

We enjoy a scant few hours of the GB crew's antics per week at most. And at a time we choose. She puts up with their bullshit 9-5, I can see how it would get old real fast. Would gladly trade places though, as I'm sure most of us would.
