I keep forgetting how awful the camera is in this game, Ninja Gaiden gets way more undeserved flack for it.

That Resident Evil heritage doesn't help in this aspect.

That doesn't really yield the answers I was looking for. Allot say it's difficult, but do not explain why they find it difficult, which is what I was interested in.

Every single one of those reviewers finished the game did they not? They most likely had a deadline also, whilst most of them might not even be experienced with games like that. That makes me not really understand why things like 'extreme difficulty' are being said. It more so seems like a stance of: 'I rarely die in games. I died allot more in this game so it's extremely difficult'.

My question more or less was, is that really how people define difficult games in general?

Yes, it was. On the harder difficulty settings. On normal, not so much, which is my point.

Your point is wrong. The original DMC 3 on Normal was a genuinely difficult action game.

If Brad would play DMC 3 SE on Hard and in Yellow Orb mode to recreate the experience of the original version, he would get slaughtered.

That's besides the point, though. People were arguing that DMC was way easier than any other game in the franchise. Now we're discussing whether it was easier that one of two releases of one of five games in the series.

The original argument is pretty far gone by that point.

@curufinwe: Hm, well, perhaps I have misjudged general perception based on the talk I followed at the time when I was playing it.

May I ask you how you define a difficult game though? This topic has made me rather curious what people think constitutes a hard game.

@zevvion: I am not misremembering the original DMC3, I still own that copy and played it only a few months back. If you wanna act all cool because you think a game that is widely considered to be hard is easy then fine but act as though you speak on everyone's behalf.

@whatisdelicious: The game didn't suit you then. That's possible of course. You can't like every game and not every game can be made to appeal to everyone.

But I don't think you can say your experience with it would be the same for everyone. Allot of people had fun with it immediately upon playing. It's not at all hard for the sake of being hard. It poses a challenge and you are more than capable to handle it.

I feel you are missing my point though. Take BioShock Infinite. I played it on hard the first time and found it challenging, but easy. The two aren't the same thing in my view. I died a bunch of times, but I could continue on instantly barely without consequence. Dead enemies stayed dead, and so on. I doubt it took me much longer to finish than other people finished it.

I'm replaying it on 1999 mode right now and now it's a harder game. I cannot just die, ressurect and continue playing certain sections. If I die when I don't have sufficient money (I can die about 3 times usually) I get booted back to the main menu. This resulted in me having to become better at the game in order to get passed certain sections, especially the Lady Comstock. I did not have to do that while playing on hard. I died like 15 times there, but it didn't really matter. On 1999 I got stuck there, having to find a better way to deal with her.

Do you understand my viewpoint?

EDIT: judging from the tone of your post I get the feeling what I say is rubbing you the wrong way. I'm not trying to be an ass, just trying to explain how I look at it.

@zevvion: With Ninja Gaiden, all I do is block a lot, dodge a lot, and go for as many air combos as possible to stay out of the way of other enemies whenever possible, and I don't think that game's all that hard at all, except for the bullshit times where it's poorly tuned. Or maybe I just expected it be harder given its reputation. I don't know. It's definitely not forgiving; I'll say that much.

God of War isn't that challenging usually (unless you jack it up to the hardest difficulty) because it's too focused on being "fun." Which is excels at in spades. They had to decrease the difficulty of that section near the end in Ascension, and I'm glad they did because I beat it before they did that and it wasn't very fun.

I'm a guy who likes challenging games when they're fair. Dark Souls is challenging as hell, but it's fair, so I felt motivated to keep going and try new things, and now I've beaten it four times. What an awesome game.

So DMC3 probably would've been fine if it had any kind of difficulty ramp at all, but it doesn't. It literally just throws you in and chews you up. It wasn't fun and didn't feel like it would become fun either, so I didn't feel like practicing and quit.

You may not need to practice, and that's great for you, but you're the minority. DMC3 has a reputation for being hard, and it's well-earned. I don't like games that are hard for the sake of being hard, and that's one of them.

But the practice of talking about how easy you found games that other people think are hard is really boring. It feels like we're in middle school or something.

@liquidus: Nah it's just classic elitism. I remember being really excited to jump into that game because it was my first DMC and I'd heard so many good things about that series, then I barely made it like three or four enemy encounters before I was just like, "Fuck this," quit, and went back to God of War.

Nobody thinks you're cooler because you think a hard game is easy, @zevvion.

The same thing applies to you I think. We have different interpretations on what high difficulty is. I think there is a difference between 'hard' and 'challenging'. DMC3 sure was a challenging game unlike God of War for instance. As so, you die a bunch of times. But you are never 'stuck' in the game. You never need to practice to get better at it. If you die in a boss battle, you just try something else again and a couple of tries later you defeat him without becoming better at it.

Whereas a hard game requires you to become better at it, or else you won't win. You will not get by, simply by retrying. I personally found Ninja Gaiden a hard game. You had to become better at the game mechanics to get passed even the first boss.

But that's what my interpretation is. I know allot of people believe that dying a certain number of times makes a game hard. I just don't see it that way.

So this series started because controversy regarding Brad's review of DMC and him wanting to find out about the original.

We have learned that the original wasn't that hard after all, that the camera is really broken and that we had all collectively agreed to forget that at one point it becomes a crappy six axis FPS.

I'd say mission accomplished. Totally worth it, too. That said, no reason to stop. He's burning through this and there are three more to go. Stealth ER needs to keep on going.

Yeah. I really, really liked DmC and I'm a Devil May Cry fan. Everyone has their own opinion of course, but when I saw people saying it was too easy, I kind off figured allot of people were just bashing the game to bash it. DMC has never, ever, been a hard game. Everyone can finish it. It only gets difficult on higher difficulty levels. I guess people think it's 'cool' to be able to finish a game other people can't or don't want to.

The original American version of DMC 3 was a hard game.

Yes, it was. On the harder difficulty settings. On normal, not so much, which is my point. One of the reasons the new game is viewed as easy is how you can continue from a checkpoint as opposed to doing the entire mission over. I don't know, but having to beat a section you can easily beat over and over and over again just because you are having trouble at a certain point is not fun and you're not 'hardcore' if you pretend to like it.

Which is what most of the difficulty criticism seems like to me. 'Everyone can finish it now? The game sucks!' I don't like mentality like that and it brings me to my original point that everyone always could finish any DMC game.

Yes.

But now you've gone from "DmC has NOTHING on the rest of the series it's all dumbed down and shit" to "this one early version of one of the games in the series that turned out to be ever so slightly imbalanced is actually way harder than the rest of the franchise".

DmC IS a bit easier than earlier games on the default difficulty but it ramps up very smoothly to a very reasonable challenge. Haters with little hindsight completely misrepresented how it compares to the rest of these, and especially to the original, both in terms of quality and in terms of difficulty.

Man, Brad's would-be phone nabber's lines reminded me of a time I got mugged at a country fair arcade.

I was playing Virtua Cop, and a kid way shorter than me picked up the other gun and asked me how to play. I explained that you point the gun and shoot, which he was already mimicking with the P2 gun. He got bored and focused his attention on my wristband that let me ride any rides in place of buying tickets all day.

"How does THAT work? Can I see it?"

That's when a teen accomplice, easily twice my age and size grabs me under the armpits from behind. The younger one starts tugging on the bracelet hard, and I can feel it bunching and cutting into my skin but it doesn't give. He struggles with it for what had to be half a minute and doesn't manage to snap it. I wonder if they have knives.

Cursing at me, he winds up and punches me solidly in the gut while I'm completely defenseless. I'm grateful he didn't have a knife. Both kids run out of the arcade empty-handed, with me hot on their heels. They blew right past two NY cops on foot, and I promptly snitched on them and went on more rides. It was a good day.

That Nelo 2 fight was INTENSE. Not least because Brad had DT left at the end of the fight and wasn't using it.

Making great progress though, love this series!

Since this doesn't start with an A minor chord then perhaps you could start with Macho Man saying "Art thou bored?" That's a good question Randy Savage. A good question indeed. Most likely yes. Rest in peace. Might as well start archiving these in the Endurance Run section. I like DMC but this feature still feels sort of inconsequential. There's no way Bradley would cry on such an easy game. Thanks for the video guys. The text is on the screen.

Great to see BMC return! Enjoyed the gameplay as well as the discussion a whole bunch. Also, what happened? Do I need to look into acquiring some that sweet anti-allergy dope now? Is it just amphetamines? You get "jittery" and are suddenly very focussed on twitch gameplay, huh.

Either way, great job - can't wait for the next one.

@noelveiga: It's a lot harder than DmC:Devil May Cry and the camera really isn't that bad if you've played any fixed camera game before. The underwater stuff is about 20 minutes total of the game and isn't really bad, just weird. DMC on Normal is like DmC on Dante Must Die except in DmC you can kill bosses in less than 10 hits on Dante Must Die mode.

The underwater levels in DMC1 suck so bad. Unfortunately, they make an appearance in Lucia's DMC2 campaign, but at least Dante's spared.
