This finally looks like Metal Gear made for people who aren't willing to put up with BS controls (and I say this after playing and enjoying the whole MGS series)

Looks and sounds great. The stealth animations and CQC combos look really amazing.

So one major story mission plus some side ops or whatever? Sounds like a VR Missions +

Which is fucking awesome.

Maybe it's just because it's been a long time since I last played an MGS game (9 years in fact) but I don't remember them being like this. This seems even more 'actiony' than SC: Conviction was.

The best thing about metal gear is that it plays how you play it. Even in MGS1 you could blast your way through. These games have always given you tons of guns and explosives. You can tell when you watch that video that there are tons of stealth options, but they just decide to play it more head on.

Wonder how this will look in the PS3 version. That's the most likely one I'll get unless they decide (wisely) to do a PC version.

They say there are multiple ways to finish a mission but everything I saw was so scripted. Luring that APC to the cliff looked interesting but then it just flies off in a an OBVIOUSLY scripted way. Then he drives a jeep and as long as he comes to the gate the game again takes over with a scripted event taking away control.

Nothing in that game is dynamic it seems, you just have a choices of three or four pre-scripted solutions to every problem. Yeah, better than a typical CoD game in single player, but not really all that interesting as a game that is SUPPOSED to be a show case of single player campaign design from Japan.

I have to say it is much more of the same old metal gear as ever. I'm not as impressed with Konami as Konami seems impressed with itself.

Christ that looked boring. The guards are apparently blind. That tank would have driven off the cliff without the C4. Him being 'sneaky' apparently just means running around in broad daylight so obviously an idiot could spot him. A helicopter that blew up which we totally didn't see coming (I like how the guy ran back out underneath the helicopter just so he could dive out of the way in epic fashion). The take-downs look idiotic (he was standing right in front of one guy while taking down a second and he just stood there watching the whole time, then just magically teleports into snakes arms). The first trailer looked awesome, this just looks like a crap tie-in to the new GI-Joe movie.

Jumping from 5m height without a roll, not breaking knees (check), being a bullet sponge (check), enemies being completely and obviously blind (check), Rolling with a tracksuit whilst having a bolt action sniper rifle on the back with the bolt handle massaging your spine - no pain (check), APC large caliber turret gun not being able to penetrate, or destroy a concrete block (check), double takedowns move the 2nd guy 2 meters closer with magic so you can reach him (check), 3 or more scripted events in succession (check).

Jup it's MGS.

Snake seems to be able to take an unrealistic amount of shots without feeling any pain.

THAT's the unrealistic part of the Metal Gear series...

Seriously, looks great, but the writing in these games has gone beyond terrible-funny into the realm of just terrible.

I don't know how tightly scripted this demo mission was but it sure looked rehearsed.

"Oh no, the helicopter was shot down! How surprising and not at all expected! Let me just run out here at the right moment to witness it crashing so I can do a really cool dive under it!"

No on-screen radar and no health indicator - are they going with regenerating health now? The damage effect on the screen seemed to disappear when Snake did a CQC takedown, perhaps indicating that's a way of restoring health? There wasn't any alarm counter either.

I'll give them an out on the whole "guards must be blind" thing because that particular guy was an undercover agent, it might not actually be possible to alert him.

Man, this looks like a PS3 game with over-used motion blur and depth of field. Was really hoping this game would look better, but I wonder if it has to do with the fact that it's being released for current-gen systems.

Yeah probably well rehearsed scene. Anyway, the undercover agent guy is actually modelled from one of the Kojima Productions staffs, from the japanese TGS live stream Kojima said that he purposely placed his co-worker as a soldier just for TGS.

It was rehersed, scripted not so much. watch the japanese playthrough of the demo, it is actually a different run (without the narration) they do more or less the same rehersed events but things go slightly differently.

and i dont know if you were aware, but regenerating health in metal gear isnt new, rations were just the quick optional way. But anyways, I wouldnt take it too much to heart, I would observe it more from a technical standpoint ie new features involved and technologies (use of blur, effects lighting and new stealth and combat mechanics) finalized UI's dont normally show up till right before it hits the shelf anyways.

So, is this not going to be a mission that's in the final game than, or at least in a different fashion? The part at 1:04 just makes it seem like the game takes place in 2013, since it pops up in such a way, while also describing the place they're at. So, that won't be there in the final version. I wish it wasn't in this one, because it seems misleading. To me, it makes sense now, but it didn't initially. I guess it's because I was looking for clues, when that's not what this is really about.

Looks rad, though this part annoyed me.

"I don't have anything on me to take out this armored vehicle"

"Let me just place this C4 right here"

So you do in fact have something on you...

The animation in this footage looks crazy-fast, like it's been sped up 2x in video-editing software. Maybe i'm just used to how framey MGSIV was, maybe not.

Looks neat but I miss the trial and error stealth games of old. I understand those games were less appealing to a mass audience but what is the point of sneaking around if you can just shoot your way out of every scenario?

Obviously the reason to not shoot your way out of every scenario is to prevent a level boss from sending the ghosts of the men you've killed to guilt-trip you while you endlessly walk forward in a ravine.

The increased visual fidelity just serves to highlight how ridiculous some situations are, despite their best efforts at realistic stealth. For example, he sneaks around a bunch, locates his target, then proceeds to jump out and begin interrogating him out in the open, in plain sight. At least walk him into the shadows before you start asking him questions.

Also, I'd like to hope that the reason Snake took so many shots is that they had god-mode (or reduced damage) enabled for demo purposes.

Really liking this move towards less of a linear gameplay structure and more towards a pre-Splinter Cell: Conviction type stealth environment. I haven't played anything MGS-related since Portable Ops, so I'm hungry for a bit more of Kojima's crazy story, though I'm not sure if I'm crazy enough to buy a PS4 solely for Ground Zeroes.

Wait a minute, I need some clarification here...

I thought Big Boss was dead until the events of Metal Gear Solid IV, when they used parts from Solidus and Liquid to reconstruct him for that one scene with Snake. How can this take place in 2013?

It doesn't. The year is 1975, and MGSV: The Phantom Pain happens in 1984. Check out the chronology.

Fucking hell I forgot that. I love this series, I really do, but that ending MGS4 ranks amongst the worst endings to a series every. It was nearly an hour of telling me what happened, not showing... ugh.

I don't know how I feel about the rebounding health in this. I realize people complain about how much running away you need to do in MGS typically, but without the stakes of limited supplies you can do what he did here: hide and pick off enemies until you clear a path.

I think I'd have appreciated better options to run away (since now the maps are open enough that you can just run for it) but equally punishing combat. Of course we won't know until we play it, but yeah, from this demo that's what it looks like.

I'm also a bit surprised that this seems to be taking a lot of cues from Peace Walker, rather than MGS 3 or 4. That's not good or bad, but I wasn't really anticipating it. I don't like the PSP games as much as some of the press does. They are the only MGSs I never played to completion.

I'm not sure which Splinter Cell you're talking about. Those games were extremely linear, down to presenting single-room scenarios. Maybe Double Agent was different? I didn't play that one.

The story is, mildly described, convoluted. But I think of it the same way I think of the Yakuza series. They are our soap opera video games. Always new characters, twists, drama and (unconfirmed/confirmed) canon breaking events... and we love it! There are of course more soap points that they hit, but it's to much to go into here and now. I might do a blog on it when I have time. My bachelors in film- and television science has to be good for something!

This is maybe a bit of a stretch, but I don't think that these side ops are canon to the story, exist solely to give people more to do, and thus don't have to make perfect sense. Maybe? I dunno.
