This seems like bad timing considering Wolfenstein just came out. No Xbox One or PS4 is super worrying. Looks pretty good graphically for a last gen game though.

It's a real bummer to see people shit all over stuff like this instantly for not having been able to pump hundreds of millions of dollars into art assets. I really wish there was still room for these kind of mid-tier projects to get made more often.

I'm not super pumped about World War II in particular, but I miss this category of game coming out every once in a while.

That Alien Rage they did--judging from the QL--looks significantly better than this, though. Maybe not technically, but it at least had some degree of an art style to it, whereas this just looks terribly bland.

I'd be interested if it was for PS4, but its not, and I really don't feel like hooking up the old consoles. Wolfenstein has been fucking great and really satisfied that FPS itch I had since the PS4 launched (Killzone was too boring, Battlefield was too broken) but I can definitely go with another decent FPS game. Shame

I disagree, you can't make a serious sounding story trailer and throw in multiplayer footage right away. It's very off-putting trying to sell some sort of serious resistance story and then seeing gameplay with point numbers flying about.

That aside, yeah, quite decent.

Alien Rage?! That game looked like budget generic sci-fi UE3 garbage, poor Jeff for even suffering through that for a QL.

Enemy Front looks way better, even has stealth and sniping in it and the levels don't seem as small as Call of Duty 1-3.

I actually think including multiplayer footage worked in this scenario. Hopefully without sounding too pretentious, it felt like the story would be told through your moment-to-moment actions, not grandiose cutscenes. There's an argument to be made for the fact that shooting someone across the map, trying to flank another guy, and then getting flanked yourself and chased into a building is itself the most effective story a game could tell - a story purely told through gameplay. I know that sounds super pretentious, and for that I'm sorry.

That aside though I thought the music and dialogue were fairly well written. Nothing revolutionary, but it got me pretty emotional.

It's a game about oppression of the european populace, villifying one part of Europe, and painting the others as the victims, and in rides the brave american to save them all.

Sure, it's a small thing to get upset about, but it's such blatant, pandering bullshit.

Before I get started on a real rant as to 'merica's lackluster involvement in WW2, I'll just sign off and say that this game looks kinda' "meh".

Is it too much to ask for a game that approaches WWII in a serious and historic tone instead of this edgy metro last light masquerading as 'merica nonsense? This just looks like utter garbage.

I think...with the new Wolfenstein, this will not have as big of an impact. It looks like a solid FPS WWII shooter, and we really need another good WWII shooter, but it just does not look as epic as The New Order. Very stylish teaser, but will the actual game play like that. I will give it chance, but I have my doubts. I am not looking for FX and top notch graphics, I am looking for good, well written story and expertly delivered game-play.

@humanity: The back-end of history is an ugly thing. To see beyond the looking-glass, you'll need to open your mind to the concept that anything and everything you've ever been told was a lie.

You see, I was there.. Ask yourself how this is possible, but believe that it could be, or you are already lost. But I shall tell my tale, nonetheless. For I remember it well, the city beaten bronze in the setting autumn sun. It wouldn't be the first, or the last time men bled for what glimmered like gold.

Aaaaaand I'm running out of steam real quick here..

Honestly, it's a very large topic, and going through it in detail would be fun to do over a beer or two, not so much throgh a forum post.

To give you the super-short version, US involvement in WW2 was essentially their naval efforts. Their contributions to the war proper in Europe came relatively late, despite that they considered the western theatre their main priority, and yet it was largely irrelevant to the greater outcome of the war. Italy surrendered without as much as a fight, and it was the Russians/Chinese who defeated the infamous Japanese Kwantung Army, and the Russians who broke the back of the German military machine at the cost of a staggering, unbeleliable loss in human lives. The Americans mainly fought against fortified, defensive positions held by the Germans in France and Italy, famous Omaha beach being a perfect example. Now, good men fought and died there and I don't mean to undermine their efforts in any fashion, but it was in a lot of ways unnecessary in the grander scheme of things. It's a truly good thing that they did push onwards, to help liberate the concentration camps if nothing else, but that wasn't the motive. The race for Berlin was just that, an effort to ensure that the soviets would not gain control of the whole of Germany, which is why they ensured Germany stay divided after the war in rejecting the Stalin letter (highly controversial subject on it's own, impossible to say if Stalin would've honoured it). Many believe that also was the main reason for why they bombed Japan, to have them surrender to the Americans as opposed to Soviet friendly forces. A lot of this stuff sounds really horrid and calculated, and you know what? It is.

That said, 'Merica's involvement in the post-war affairs cannot be commended enough, the foremost examples being the Marshall plan, and the Berlin Airlift. We're talking economic miracle-work here, and it is undoubtedly America's finest moment. The fact that they had done similair work after WW1, and were ready to once again aid the restoration of the German economy borders on saintly.

To return to the orignal topic, so many of these games about WW2 (most of which are ironically made where?) tend to paint the Americans as the heroes in this conflict. It's unjustified. If there are any heroes in this conflict, then it's the Polacks (they fucking rode out their cavelry against the oncoming tanks even when all was lost, holding on to the promise of the coming help from the English. Which never happened as it were), as well as any that helped harbour fugitives. Additionally, there's good chance that the US wouldn't even have entered the war if it weren't for Pearl Harbour, humanitarian reasons and their allies deep involvement in the war be damned. That said, America definitely were the heroes after the war. Except for their treatment of American-Japanese, which was a bizarre parallel to the Nazi mindset.

So, there, that's why I don't like having Europe painted as everything from monster to victim and have the Americans stylized as their saviours. It's undeserved, pandering and more than a little silly. Americans did their part, as did everyone else.

Edit: Super-short version. I stand by that statement.

@do_the_manta_ray: Thanks for the interesting read! Having Polish 'ancestors' I can tell you that on one hand they greatly valued all the American efforts in the war - my grandfather recounted how American soldiers liberated him and his men from a German camp and offered all the starving people their chocolate bars (which was incidentally a really bad move.) Also all the logistical support in the form of equipment and money that the US provided throughout the war. On the other hand they resented how the US, France and England basically handed off their country to the Russians, forcing Poland into years of unwanted communism.

Of course the war can be viewed through many prisms. To this day I think that Hiroshima and Nagasaki are incredible war crimes that almost no one holds against the US. It was an extremely calculated move that killed so many innocent civilians. Alas!
