Civilization Is Headed for the Stars

Looks like it's time to get back into Civ...

I had never played a Civ game or an XCOM game in my life before V & Enemy Unknown but both of those were so god damn good I'm struggling to imagine Fireaxis messing this up. If the whole team became hard cider alcoholics overnight I'd still have every faith in them.

It epitomised a brave and bold future of string theory and nano-robotics, of the essence of humanity flourishing in the far distances of space. Of alien contact and harmony with a new world. Plus a little dash of lasers and nuclear weaponry...

I started to get into Civ a couple of years ago (yeah, I know). But since that time I really got into them so needless to say, I'm really looking forward to Beyond Earth.

This is exciting -- I feel this breaks out the trend of games that simulate the past (recent Civ expansions, the Total War series). I remember Alpha Centuri as being cool but a bit of a downer at the same time. This trailer has a positive tone that I hope to see in the game.

some of the stuff they showed at the panel sounded really cool, like the tech tree is a web and you expand based on different philosophies of human development (like cyberization versus genetic modification) and there is also a satellite layer on the map that sounds like you will be able to place buffs or debuffs on tiles using satellites.

I didn't buy Civ V because I never played Civ IV after buying it. I played Civ IV at my friend's years before I bought it for myself. This one looks very cool to me, but I'm going to hold off unless one or more of my regular co-op buddies wants it also.

Yeah, I actually read this a while after I made that post. It's a spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri apparently.

@zevvion: Space, its basically an Alpha Centauri reboot minus the name because they don't have rights to the name. You start as a fresh colony ship on the planet.

This doesn't really mean anything though. I think it's pretty much normal procedure of fireaxis to only announce games when they are a few months from release. I know they did it for all the civ expansions and xcom which all turned out great.

I'm curious how this will work though. Will you start in prehistoric times and work your way up to space? Or will you start out in space?

What do you mean the hexes give away it´s a V expansion? This is a stand-alone game. The use of hexes hardly says it must be an expansion for V just because that game used them. That doesn't make much sense.

@iceland: Saw that moments after watching the trailer here, totally different vibe, but just as awesome.

Anyways I wonder how will they handle different "civs" in this game will it be different fictional ideology groups or will they be extension of present day nations.

@bigd145: No you are wrong. They use hexes now, period. It's not a V expansion - they have already said this is a brand new stand alone game.

If anything it's unlikely that Civ VI will be seen for a great number of years as this is basically the next major release Civ game.

@uberjannie: Be thrilled it's only six months! Most games that are not yearly, CoD/AC, are revealed YEARS in advance! :)

Why are people surprised by this? It's been done before in civ, most recently with iv. The hex's give it away as a v expansion.

I just hope they change some of the stuff from Civ V and bring it back closer to Civ IV.

Hey guys, I think this will be pretty cool. I mean, I'm no "game reviewer" or whatever, and this is a pre-rendered trailer, but hey- these are the guys. I bet this game will be fantastic. You have not failed me yet Firaxis, so I'm gonna say it's a safe bet.
