Company of Heroes 2 Takes You to the Brutal Battles of World War II's Eastern Front

I personally think it needs more Ivan Drago battling Mecha Hitler, but then I never did know much about World War II, anyway.

I respectfully disagree. I think that it looks both fascinating and interesting to play

I will take ANYTHING at this point, CoHO shutting down and the horrible multiplayer interface of the original made me want to cry.

@bloodsoul5: You mean a trailer for an RTS that is down at over the shoulder viewing angle is going to look worse than modern shooters? SHOCKING.

The game is going to be played from the most zoomed out perspective possible 99% of the time, and I'm willing to bet that'll look really nice. Of course the individual dudes are low poly and have muddy textures. It's an RTS.

Alright, now that a new CoH trailer comes out, I feel the Humble Bundle is shady. Way to take a possible good and turn it into marketing THQ

I hope they really dictate large scale combat. The eastern front's conflicts were so massive in grasp. I'd hate myself to see DoW II style of small group combat. Men of War series nailed it with their formula, of course some of their games aren't very good but it the mechanics are still there. Just an opinion. I don't think of small group tactics when I think RTS. If you can't manage both micro and macro with a large sum then perhaps not play the genre.

Are you really that surprised that THQ, a dying company, wasn't doing the Humble Bundle just for charity?

I agree that it does not look much different from the old Company of Heroes, which is very disappointing. But, Company of Heroes also does look pretty great. I think it's aged pretty well. While the game is played from an overhead perspective, I really enjoy viewing replays and seeing all the action up close. So I think its understandable to be disappointed.

@Maajin: Not at all. Obviously it was mutually beneficial for both parties to do the bundle deal. I just thought we could appreciate it for what it was (cheap games, giving to charity) for more than a couple of hours

@KoolAid: The timing of it. Like THQ specifically got involved with the bundle to get their name talked about, and then immediately drop a new trailer while the focus is on them. I know that the Bundle wasn't entirely a charitable effort on their part, but it at least gave the illusion that, even in their dire situation, they were offering up these games to encourage a charitable donation.

Looks very similar to the first game, based on the trailer.

That's not necessarily a bad thing; I played a lot of CoH:OF

starcraft 2 shits all over this games graphics, and that was friggin designed to be run on 10 year old computers. This game should look like the best RTS game ever made, just like the original did when it came out. This just seems... really lazy.

@MildMolasses: I find that companies tend to release press info in big chunks, so I'm not really surprised on the timing. But you are right, they want to leverage goodwill from the humble bundle so people think better of them.

But I don't feel like it matters. In the end, the bundle is still a great deal. And it is still a donation to charity. And the indie companies that have done this is in the past want to capitalize on the same goodwill as well. It doesn't bug me.

It's really weird that this game seems to keep coming out of nowhere then being forgotten about instantly.

@bloodsoul5 said:

It's an RTS, they shouldn't be zooming in that close, it also made the first games look kinda ugly but from a normal, zoomed out perspective it'll look nice.

I played a short demo of CoH2 at Eurogamer, very impressed. Code was pre-alpha (as with all games will look a lot better by the time they go gold) but they were doing some very cool stuff with terrain and weather. Units speed is affected by snow depth, ice can break under heavier units and, according to the guy I spoke to, exposure can kill. They seam to be doing a good job of simulating the brutal conditions that the German and Russian forces faced on the Eastern Front while maintaining the core of what made CoH so good.

My years of playing table-top wargames taught me that the Eastern Front had the best tank battles. This could be very cool.

The Ice mechanics look SICK. Relic's RTS are already my favorite, and this one looks to be on the right track.

If anyone's interested in this part of history, I recommend listening to Dan Harlin's "Hardcore History" podcast series titled "Ghosts of the Ostfront." What went on in the Eastern front in terms of volume of slaughter and depravity of human action is nuts.

How on earth do you even judge that by this trailer? The original CoH was one of the best looking RTS games of its time, maybe even THE best looking. And I have no doubt CoH2 will be an amazing looking game ... at least judging from the screenshots on their website.

I'm not a WWII buff, and I'm sure somebody that is will see this, but do you think there really was a general that thought it would be a good idea to order tanks into battle over a frozen body of water?

I understand the element of surprise and that the enemy wouldn't expect an attack from that direction, but it still seems like the cons would outweigh the pros.

Whole armies have been sent over frozen bodies of water for winter invasions. It's relatively common in cold regions.

This game looks very familiar to the original COH. Which is fine but its also 7 years later. I'm not bothered much by the graphics considering the original game still looks great and this one looks to be at least incrementally better. I am more concerned with the gameplay and I hope that rerlic is really going to innovate and add new strategies and tactics to the formula. If the game comes out and its basically the same game as before with new units and thats about it, I can see the game feeling underwhelming in a lot of ways. I think the game needs to be more than just a glorified expansion pack and really bring something new to the table to get me really excited.

One thing I absolutely hope is not the case is that the game is focused on very small battles like in DOW2 because that sense of scale and mass carnage is what I want out of a WW2 RTS. I also wonder if base building is in or not, and if it will be more interesting than just a linear series of structures to unlock units and upgrades. Additionally, I hope the single player has some sort of meta-game aspects as opposed to just a linear series of missions.

I wonder why the fuck they decide to show mostly close up footage of an RTS game.

I'd understand it if they were to show off amazing close up graphics but this is nothing special.

You're looking at zoomed in footage of an RTS. For the genre it will probably look absolutely amazing, just like the first one did.

Wow. As a big fan of CoH (who stills plays multiplayer regularly online), I've waited a long time to see some footage of the game and here it is... and its thoroughly underwhelming.

To clarifiy, I think the game will be great but that was not a trailer that was going to get a lot of people interested who weren't already CoH fans.

It's a hard thing to show off. If you zoom out too far it just looks like any RTS which might turn off some, zoom too close and you get the impression that the graphics aren't the sharpest which turns off others. At least they didn't go all CG video which I think is the worst kind of trailer.

Personally I've never played CoH but I like how this trailers looks and I want to give it a shot -- if it'll ever be released that is. Now If it has the option to just let me roll around in tanks and make explosions happen without too much micromanagement then I'm definitely sold.

CoH reinvigorated my interest into the RTS genre and I hope CoH2 will live up to it's predecessor. I'm pretty in live with Men of War: Assault Squad so it'll be hard for it to lure me away from just this trailer.

Giant Bomb needs to implement a reddit-like comment section ASAP, stupid people getting on top of good comments makes me not take this site seriously.

Well, back to Destructoid and PCGamer where they have a decent comment section.

Why are games marketed like movies? Is anyone else bashing there head against a wall going "no no no no no". Why can't all games have those RDR trailers where a guy just shows you LIKE A QUICK LOOK the features of the game in nicely edited, quick sections. I think they normally ended with a montage of the features he explained over the first 3 minutes. Seriously. Can everybody just get on that train? I don't see what the hold up is.
