The first one was profoundly flawed, but there were moments of brilliance. That said, Shank 1 gave me enough Shank for a lifetime.

How is the footage uncut when the main protagonist is cutting up everything on screen. They could have played on the words and only shown environmental kills.

First one looked cool, but never got around to playing it. Sadly, I'm afraid this one will share the same fate...

But I wanna play it!

I enjoyed the first game, but I grabbed it during a sale. Not sure I'd grab this at 1200 points. Would consider it at 800 points. Will definitely buy at at 600 points.

The first Shank was boring and offered no real challenge. You could pretty much walk through the entire level. So the man this is some cool looking fighting got real repetitive real fast. This continues to look like the first one.

Also the boss battles were hard, but that's mostly because they were just spamming missles and shit at you the whole time. And they even reused the same miniboss a bunch too I think.

You should google "The Circle of Hate Ken Levine".

I personally loved the first Shank, and this looks great. As much as I enjoyed the first, $15 was too much, they should release this for $10 and I'm sold.

Wrong.

Shank is disappointing to those expecting some super-easy, walk-to-the-end hack'n slash. Shank offered a lot more than that. Sure, there were some design flaws, but Shank offered replay value, especially with all of the different weapon combinations and the various types of tactics you can use to take guys down. I played it one way on my first playthrough, and then I played it a totally different way on my second playthrough just to see how deep and varied the combat was. Hint: there's a lot more than what the game gets credit for.

So, I really enjoyed Shank, and I am certainly looking forward to this. I think it might actually serve the game better to list out some of the changes because unfortunately, the gameplay has a very specific pattern and style, so it's hard to get a sense of how it's changed without some bullet points.

Also, just a random though: I see those gold rock/coins that the baddies leave after they die, I assume those are a currency of some sort. Are we in an age where you still have to walk over coins/money/other stuff to pick them up? A minor detail, but worth pointing out, I think.

I bought the first Shank for half price and still thought the game was crap. People have different tastes but personally Shank was probably the worst game I have played this generation.

I do like the River City Ransom style improvised weaponry, but that's not enough. Shank's biggest flaw was repetition, and the last thing I want is a sequel that looks largely the same.

Even though you can slap enemies around a bit with a large trout.

Well no. You could literally spam buttons and do whatever you wanted in that game with no consequence. There is no nuance to the combat and you can pretty much walk from end to end. I'm sure if I put it on hard and they had a ton of HP it would be harder, but artificially making a game hard like that does not make it more fun.

I wanted to like the first shank, but I found out very quickly it's a shallow experience. I'm sure you might have had a great time playing it, but that doesn't change the fact that there was no reason to try all the different weapons. Again you should check out the circle of hate. It's something Ken Levine talks about a lot and I think it's something shank desperately needs.

That's not a matter of fact. That's a matter of opinion. You're not very good at this, are you?

You could, or you could not. So Shank should be blamed for the fact that you couldn't understand the combat beyond button mashing? The game is much deeper and nuanced once you stop that and start timing. I originally hated the combat and didn't enjoy the animation priority, but I was mashing. Once I stopped, I realized how rewarding it actually was.

@Napalm: I call it disappointing because of how short the game is, and how much of a grind the combat gets after awhile. The game is totally worth a play IMO, but it costs 15 bucks standard, and to me its hard to drop that kind of money on a game that can be beat in 3 hours. Yes, as you said it can be played through multiple times and you can use different weapons to play differently, but most games are like that. Playing through Gears 3 using a shotgun/sniper combo offers an entirely different experience then using the lancer, but in the end its still the same game.

@Jethuty: I played it on my friends 360 when it originally came out since it didn't make it to the PC until a few months after the console versions. Thanks for the investigation though, I appreciate it.

Shank is a brawler-ass brawler. I have an inherent love for these kinds of games, and for me, Shank harkens back to a time in gaming long forgotten. The game is difficult in spots and does a few things really well, and there is a whole lot of trial and error, while the game gives you a lot of one thing. It's not for everybody, but those looking for it will find an engaging brawler/hack'n slash that holds up on repeat plays. Is the game flawed? Yes. I think there's a bit too much animation priority, and I think not being able to change the angle of gunfire hurts it in spots when that precision is needed. Regardless, there is enough nuance and variety in the combat where everybody will find a combination/style that works for them.

@Napalm: I agree 100%. As I said I had a ton of fun when I first played it, I just felt that it could have been a much better game. If it was a few hours longer and varried up the combat some it would of been more enjoyable for me. I really hope that the second game does that, because I will happily pay the price of entry for a longer, better shank.

Well no it's not really an opinion. When it's easier and more efficient to use the weapons they give you in the first 10 minutes, I call that broken. Normally this isn't a bad thing. But when there is literally nothing else to the package aside from all the crazy weapons, it makes for a repetitive and boring game.

So yes I would call it a fact that I can breeze through that entire game with no real need to switch weapons. Because I almost did it until I caved out of boredom.

Pretty damn excited for this. Played the first Shank no less than 3 times through, and plan to go through one more time prior to playing this.

Every complaint I saw against the original was a universal complaint that fitted all games in the 2d brawler genre, not just something specific to just Shank. The game harks back to brawlers of the past and was purposely similar in style. As a fan of the brawler genre in general I loved the game and got a ton of fun out of it.

I've been donning the Shank Xbox gamer picture since its release as a form of respect to such an overlooked title.

Yes, it is an opinion. Why? Because I found the later weapons to be far more useful than the ones you get in the beginning of the game and it dramatically improved combat in many ways. I had one experience, and you had another. That's not a fact. That's an opinion. Do you understand now?

@Hef: There are multiple stages in that first game where the chainsaw and pistols are certainly not more efficient than other weapons combinations. I played through once on normal and twice on hard and found myself switching weapons on many occasions, even in the middle of battle.

As for "is it an option or not"... yeah its an option, just like picking up a pipe or knife in Final Fight or Streets of Rage was an option.

This is a brawler for people that love brawlers. If you didn't like the first one take those ten bucks and spend it elsewhere. I for one can't wait, but what happened to the enemy names and life bars?
