This is going to sound like a total copy of somebody else's comment, but I've never played or been remotely interested in a Devil May Cry game before, but upon clicking on this out of sheer boredom I really liked what I saw. Dante seems to be walking the delicate line between real emotional human and total badass without slipping into JRPG emo or gruff hollywood roid machine. Good delivery by the voice actor. The aesthetic and setting are cool, but Virgil is kinda meh for me.

This, pretty much.

Same here. Everything but the lack of excitement for Virgil. He looks like he has some real potential to get really psycho by the end of the game. Watch his eyes, man.

@whatisdelicious: If you mean.... lol ok I guess I should actually spoiler-block this then.

...that Vergil will invariably turn against Dante, then any dedicated fan of the franchise will know that's bound to happen anyway because of their original history in DMC3.

However, for all we know, maybe Vergil doesn't turn against Dante and this was just a red herring. It's like how spoilers are sometimes invented by the people, more so than the trailers. Far as we can be aware, this is only an early story point that then kicks off the primary source of conflict as Dante & Vergil go all buddycop and head out to save Kat. Like you said, though, it's really not (or shouldn't be) a big deal, for newcomers or fan stalwarts, and I'm now under the suspicion that the original comment was just a troll...

I am a fan of the old DMC games and this looks like it could be pretty good. I didn't like they for like the great characters or anything, I liked the combat and style and retarded over the top story. Bayonetta did all of t hose things better than any of the DMC games did (and also than any other character action game did) and this doesn't look like its going to be there, but it looks like it will be fun with a potentially properly crazy story.

I don't understand the bitching about this, it looks better than every other DMC game I've seen

You take any game that has a very distinct feel and completely overhaul it to the point where it's barely identifiable and see how any community takes it. No lock on, two dodge buttons, stance options, a dedicated launcher button, new slightly weird floaty enemy juggle physics, ridiculously simplified, horribly long aerial combos along with a lot of animations (Especially Rain Storm and the new Eryx gauntlets) that are ugly as sin and cumbersome and a major tone shift that tries to be edgy but just comes off throwing expletives recklessly for it.

You may as well take Unreal Tournament and make it into a Call of Duty game for how much of a gameplay departure it's taking.

do DMC fans actually like 4? everything i've seen from this looks so so much better than that attempt.

More than you realize. There were lots of fun things you could do with Lucifer, Nero's summoned swords and some of the more interesting momentum quirks:

DMC3 was the best DMC game yet. That being said, this looks fucking good. Virgil looks great, and Dante looks fine. The dialogue seems PLENTY up to par with the past DMC's (come on, be realistic), and I'm interested in the storyline between the brothers.

I'm no DMC fan and have no stake in the yay or nay for new design argument, but it still perplexes me. It is different, yes, but why? To what end? Is this done with the intent to drum up sales from a new audience? What new audience would that be? How does this design hypothetically appeal to a new audience that the old design did not? Seems to me both old and new designs appeal to exactly the same demo (video game fans on the younger end of the spectrum).

I know enough about marketing to understand that you don't just make drastic changes like this to a proven sales commodity for random funsies. What is the thinking here?

I've played and beat every DMC and while some games in the series weren't exactly great (DMC2 is a piece of shit) they all still looked and and played like a DMC game.

When the first trailers came out I couldn't figure out why they were calling it a Devil May Cry when it didn't really seem like a Devil May Cry. After watching this latest trailer with Virgil I now know that this game is truly a "reboot" in the sense that everything about the series is being thrown out the window and all that's left are hints of names and appearances. It looks like an interesting game now, but people shouldn't expect it to play like previous games in the series or keep the same tone.

Although I'm really digging the Dante redesign, I'm not really a fan of the new Vergil. From what I remember of DMC3, Vergil was a cold, calculated bad-ass who admittedly had no personality but was cool as fuck. New Vergil seems like the idealist older brother who will either turn on Dante or will be an annoyance throughout the game. Here's hoping to Ninja Theory proving me wrong.

@HerbieBug: I think they wanted to freshen up the series a bit so they thought a reboot with a different approach in terms of story/ mood was needed. It kind of reminds me of the reboot of Prince of Persia back in 2008

The more I see of this game the more I'm liking it. And Vergil is no exception! He looks like he'll make for a great villain, with this freedom fighter 'anything for the greater good' sort of arc that'll inevitably lead him to facing off against Dante. It's no Shakespeare, but it'll make for both a better and more fleshed out character motivation than ''deh, open demon portal for power''.

Plus new Vergil's character design is bitchin'.

Capcom wants to appeal to the hypothetical "larger western audience" that will buy their game when really they already have a large enough audience on both Japan and The West so they brought in Ninja Theory. I mean DMC4 was the best selling game in the series and one of Capcom's biggest money makers. Honestly, as a DMC fan, I like the idea of this reboot, both in terms of aesthetics and story it looks very original for the franchise except the whole origin story. In that front, Ninja Theory have done a great job and I get why Capcom brought them in for that reason.

My main concern however is why Capcom decided to give this franchise that is famous for its fast-paced, highly technical combat system to a developer that have never designed a decent combat system in their previous games. That is what most fans are upset about.

Well, and there is the whole change from 60 FPS to 30 FPS because of the engine's limitations on console but that will hopefully be remedied in the PC version. If the PC port didn't suck that is...

...Okay I like what they've done with Vergil. I don't like the typical damsel in distress twist they threw in at the end there, but I guess that has been in every DMC so I guess it's part of their initiative to "appeal to the fans." Or video game writers still suck at writing female characters, which I will admit is the much more likely answer.

I like the new aesthetics, it gives some new blood to a series that felt stagnant for years now; but I can see the concern of the fans with the gameplay.

If anything, a demo is required for me to take the jump.

should've put up a spoiler warning on that trailer.

...You're being sarcastic right?? Even CAPCOM have publicly announced that Vergil's in the game; if you are really that sensitive about such 'spoilers', then it's your own fault for choosing to watch any of the trailers. Especially when it comes to anything CAPCOM's involved in, as they often just love to lay out a games entire narrative across all of the trailers.

Dude, i'm not that into DMC and I don't think I know who Vergil even is, I was just really interested in the new direction they're taking the DMC series. But after watching the trailer, I think it was full of major plot spoilers. That's all.

So it's They Live with demons instead of aliens? At least it isnt Black Hawk Down or Apocalypse Now we have enough of those.

Although it would be pretty funny to see Dante take on Vietnamese soldiers with demonic powers as fortunate son plays in the background... Somebody make that game!

While DMC 4 may have been a best seller (most likely due to a new console jump and great visuals at the time) it was also widely panned for making the player fight every boss and run through every area 3 times and a lot of people who bought didn't really have a lot of great things to say. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed DMC 4 and actually liked playing as Nero, but they needed to make a change in some way cause if DMC 5 would be the same quality as DMC 4 there would be no more DMCs afterward.

I love Ninja Theory for their writing and production values. I've been on board with the change since day one and always new it would come down to the combat system. Ninja Theory is known for being very animation and tech heavy and not for speed and fluidity in combat and combo systems. If they could find a happy medium for the combat and add in the writing and story hooks they are known for this game will be amazing. Combat trailers thus far make it look like they have and I can't wait personally.

The game industry needs more big shake ups. These kind of things breathe life back into franchises that need new ideas and if they still play well (and sell well) but don't click you can always revert back to the "original" timeline. I'd rather shake up a series before it gets stale than wait too long and have it die out completely (CoD comes to mind as getting closer to this edge every year).

This is the first DMC game I would actually think about buying. Finally a DMC game where a player can understand the characters motivations and why they would follow a particular route/narrative through the plot. I never really cared for the past Japanese overly melodramatic over the top stories...they left me dissatisfied and annoyed.

@Junpei: @Packie: CAPCOM are still developing the combat for the game, Ninja Theory are only handling the story. The 30 frames console versions is an unfortunate circumstance no doubt about it, but any other such negatives that comes out of the gameplay will be all on CAPCOM.
