I must resist urge to be interested in the game....

I'm still always suprised USA today is doing video game stuff.

Posted by Rukus

PC release, mb? If not I guess I'll have to get it for the Xbox.

Posted by The_Tolman

Always really wanted to like Demon's Souls but never could. I'm sure this is even more frustrating.

Posted by jozzy

I am so ready for this game, 4thoctober can't come soon enough.

@wewantsthering: You are wrong. You must submit your soul to it. Submit, and bask in its glory.

Posted by buhssuht

chances are, i'm gonna die in this game, a lot

The music doesn't suit the trailer at all.

Limited Edition pre-ordered and already shipped! Will be getting my hands on this game tomorrow.

Thank god for living in the Netherlands right now.

Go watch a livestream of it, there are quite a few out there. That should cure your interest, unless you were specifically interested in playing Boredom: The Videogame.

The combination of simplistic combat with a bunch of grinding and back-tracking pretty much killed any desire I had to play Dark Souls.

Posted by Thor_Molecules

@rebgav: Might I ask, have you ever touched Demon's Souls?

Posted by Humanity

Very uncharacteristic yet really cool trailer for this game. I would expect the weird unsettling gothic music from the first.

Posted by welshie

Only 5 more days!

@rebgav: your loss sucker!

Posted by Timing

I've been playing it for a few hours today and beat 3 bosses so far. Game is every bit as awesome as I was hoping it would be. Good to see a Quick Look coming tomorrow, and I really appreciated the respectful conversation on the Bombcast.

I'm still on the fence about this one. I loved the combat system in Demon's Souls--and even with the difficulty I had lots of fun playing until I reached a certain boss fight that I spent six hours trying to get past--but I was kind of wishing they'd tone down the more punishing/grindy elements favour of more a robust gameplay experience. From what I've heard, this is not the case.

That question seems like a trap, this isn't going to come up in court is it?

No, I didn't touch Demon's Souls in any way. I don't believe we were ever in the same room at the same time, certainly never unchaperoned.

I really love the visual aesthetic of this game. It comes off as generic fantasy at first glance, but then you notice the really dark, intense imagery that fills the game. It really just sells the bleakness of the world. I also love how much they embrace the medieval setting, with the full suits of armor and stuff.

ORDER IN THE COURT! *SLAMS GAVEL* (I've always wanted to do that.)

Ahem!

The defendant, Rebgav, is sentenced to play Dark Souls and/or Demon Souls, as determined by responsible authorities and future disgression, day and night constantly for a period of 25 years to life.

Justice has been served here, case closed.

And so we live to die another day. Thanks Dark Souls.

Posted by freakin9

Jokes on Dark Souls, I plan to kill myself before the release day! HAHA!

Seriously though I'm holding off selling all my consoles for this game, will probably be the last console game I play, until maybe a future next generation of consoles pulls me back in.

Posted by Kordesh

I know it probably won't be, but anyone else really hoping these trailer songs are on the soundtrack?

'simplistic combat'? Oh please humor me and tell me what you consider complex combat.

Game of the generation right here.

I can tell you what I saw of Dark Souls' combat; Dude generally advanced with his shield up, slashed wildly to hit multiple enemies (who went down in three or four hits), and occasionally worked his way around the back of an enemy for an instant-kill back-stab. I don't know if it was early in the game or if that approach was simply the most effective but that's what I watched for two hours. It seemed like crowd control was the most important factor, once the guy had all of the enemies on one side of a room or had kited them individually through a choke-point there seemed to be relatively little challenge. The bosses look tougher but I didn't get to see a full fight against one.

I pre-ordered the collector's edition  a while ago (DmS and M&B Warband fan here)...it's difficult to wait. :(

Man, what's with that Muse rip-off song?

I like it when a game soundtrack surprises me with vocals (worked great for Bastion) so sure, why not?

This game is really the last must buy for me this year, anything else can wait, even Zelda.

Are you one of those "herp derp Skyrim hurr durr" spammers on the twitch.tv streams who I keep ignoring?  I wish there was an ignore feature on this forum.  Is there?

People like Demon's Souls precisely because of its deep combat system.   But what do I know right?  I platinumed D&S and I've spend hundreds of hours playing M&B Warband...

I must be, because I'm not enamored by a game that you like.

I'd be delighted for someone to point me at a video which showcases the combat system in Dark Souls, interest in that was the reason I spent a couple of hours watching a livestream in the first place.

I'm just saying there are some trolls on twitch.tv who don't actually watch the stream.  You sometimes have one or two people join the stream and troll because of the IGN article.  ...but some streamers do make the game look boring.

Give it a chance. Don't play it if you don't want to, but please don't judge it from watching someone else play it. That's inherently boring. It's an RPG after all, even if there's action in it. Some people are just boring to watch too, there's that to consider as well. If you in fact saw this guy play the same exact formulaic way for 2 hours, I don't blame you.

@rebgav: I'd suggest getting a budget copy of Demon's Souls if you have a PS3, since the combat appears to remain very similar to Dark Souls. I can also vouch that the combat is the polar opposite of simplistic. Maybe you have to try it yourself, since watching someone else play it on a stream doesn't quite give the sense of keeping track of 5 different things at once that you sometimes get in a game like this. Demon's Souls is not a game that benefits from being watched, but rather played. You won't get a very good idea of how Dark Souls handles until you handle it yourself, or you have some kind of basis off which to base your assumptions (i.e. having played Demon's Souls).

I hope you give this game a chance, because in the end it would be you missing out, not me.

Sony is so stupid for not backing this franchise.

I can't fucking wait for this game. I hope Amazon FedEx/UPS/USPS follows through with release date arrival, they never have in the past.

Kevin VanOrd of Gamespot has been playing it for review. He posted a couple vids of the game. http://www.giantbomb.com/forums/general-discussion/30/check-out-kevin-vanords-thoughts-on-dark-souls/516508/

Yeah, I'm watching a few more videos and thinking about renting it to get first-hand experience. I probably had unrealistic expectations after seeing so much praise for Demon's and the anticipation for Dark Souls. I'm still not sure that there's enough to the combat to keep me coming back for 50 hours or so but if I end up enjoying and buying the game I will have no problem admitting that I had my head up my ass.

Posted by Lactose_the_Intolerant

I loved D'sS and I would expect nothing less than a fine ass-whooping from dark souls

Posted by Camosid

I pre-ordered this today so it should get to my house on Tuesday. I can't wait I always felt like Demon's Souls and also Dark Souls capture the look of Heavy Metal Fantasy art super well. Stuff like the Armored Spider in Demon's Souls and that giant mouth dragon thing with all the teeth in Dark Souls. Wondered if anyone else agreed with me on that.

Edited by HerbieBug

I really dislike the American marketing for this game.  It just doesn't work with your taking of unrelated pop songs and playing them over american marketing style hack and slash editing.

But get hype for Dark Souls!  Dark Souls > this trailer.  :)

Demon's Souls is not a game you'll manage any appreciation for based on video.  I put off playing it for over a year based on assumptions I had about what sort of experience it would be.  Then one day I saw it on sale and picked it up as an afterthought.  I went on to sink over 80 hours into it.  It is my favorite game of this console generation.

Word of warning:  don't try for 30 minutes, die repeatedly, then come back saying it was exactly as bad as you expected.  Give it a couple hours.  Beat the first boss.  Read a FAQ about what you could have done as opposed to what you did.  Then you will understand.

Yup. This could've been an amazing exclusive franchise for them but they let it slip through their fingertips. I bet they are kicking themselves right now.
