I find it really hard to believe that Dave had been playing this for hours and hours like he said. He seemed to be learning as he was going along. That said I'm still pretty interested in seeing where this goes.

I think "20 hours" is a huge exaggeration. Seems more like he's been playing for like 4 hours.

This has been fascinating, which is crazy because this should bore me to death. I'd never want to play it myself though.

Quite a bit of the stuff reminds me of Dungeon Keeper and the Imps there. You mark out areas for them to dig and they'll do it when they get the chance, same with picking up various things (bodies, gold etc.) and moving it around. Of course Dungeon Keeper is a lot simpler but this definitely reminds me of that in bits.

I definitely enjoyed this, hope there is more to come. Thanks for spending so much time learning the game duder.

Really? I thought it was terrible that Dave didn't answer most of Vinny's questions, it became very clear that Vinny absolutely hated being there. He wasn't able to understand practically any of it and Dave didn't really do a great job of explaining. If I were sitting on the couch watching a tiny screen and unable to make out anything(not to mention be red/green colorblind, which is what a lot of DF seems to be made of), I'd be frustrated too.

I honestly don't know where this series will go from here, or who will continue sitting in with Dave.

Argh, Drew and Vinny mentioned some space game on Steam during this, and I cannot remember the title or find the part in the video where they were discussing it. Any help? It wasn't Sins of a Solar Empire.

I feel like Dave should play a bit of Adventurer mode to show Vinny/Drew how some of the game (the excellent/hilarious combat, mostly) works.

The difficulty of the game is way too often overstated but the complexity is definitely there. Most of the difficulty comes from the fact that Toady hasn't really put any time into the UI yet, and really won't be for a long time - the game is only like a third done after almost a decade of design. The creator? He plans to work on this until he dies. Seriously.

Okay, I'm sold at the water covering statistics. Gonna have to give this a try. Great feature guys, here's to more of it!

Change the type of Video in the top right hand corner to HD.

I believe Toady has said that the UI is the last thing that will be worked on. Though it's pretty much because he basically knows nothing about making stuff modular so art assets can be added and removed as game features are.

This probably tells you all you need to know about how the game is held together with strings and gum.

If he takes too long though, games like Gnomaria and even Towns are going to come and drink his milkshake before he makes the game accessible to anyone but PC master race nerds.

It isn't just your browser. It is a limitation of the current video player, but it was said recently that they are working on a better player to be rolled out when the new site design goes live later this year.

Great video, super fun to watch. I love hardcore games but this looks painful, I could not imagining sitting by myself and having any fun playing this

I've not played DF for a while, but I'm sure Dave is making it look harder than it usually is. I am inspired to try it again, especially with that swanky tileset pack.

This is some great conten. I was actually starting to feel like the learning peak had been mostly ascended for DF part way through that having already known a bit of info about the game. The commands you make are actually pretty simple - it's just the depth of the modelling of behaviour and systems that makes it so complex. Having the tileset and mod updates is a huge part of what starts to make this manageable in the first place though.

This video got me inspired to delve into DF pretty fresh (I've heard of it before, downloaded it and saw what it was and promptly got the fuck outta there) and I've picked up the book to help me out. I hope to scare the shit out of anyone who sees me playing this into thinking I'm an even stranger, crazier person then they seem to think already.

Just one question really. What tileset is Dave using? I can't remember if they mentioned it

One of the two that come with the Lazy Newb Pack. Ironhand, I think. But if you get the LNP, it's already there and just one click to switch between the two or pure ASCII.
