This installment of Dave's antics is looking very good so far. Also, I still hate that one quest.

Dave's very own endurance run! He endures until he's wiped out by spiders.

I'm liking this more and more as it goes on; I really can't wait to see how far this goes. Thanks Dave!

This was great, and Dave should just seal that Oreilly book shut and take chat advice forever.

I'm pretty sure he even learned more this time.

@mrangryface: that guide is outdated AND is charging you for an antiquated step by step guide to stuff that doesnt even apply anymore with the last 2 current updates , remeber how dave never dug down , or didnt comprehend it ? get the book if you want to learn to play the way we did 2 years ago and then learn everything that has improved since then..

also http://dwarffortresswiki.org . and the numerous video tutorials will do you better.

this goes to anyone else AND

Actually, the book's really up to date. It was written by one of the bay12 forumgoers, and Tarn even wrote a foreword for it. It has a section on minecarts and vampires, which were the last two 'big' features that were added. The author also intends to roll out updates as more features are added to the game, so if you have a digital copy of the book (I think physical copies come with one for free anyway) you can always have up-to-date information.

That said, I learned using the wiki (not videos) and it's undoubtedly more up to date (though not always necessarily accurate), and covers a lot of stuff more in-depth. Still, the wiki is dry at best (and don't get me started on the D for Dwarf articles) so it's probably not for everyone. Like you said, video tutorials are probably the 'better' way to learn, but the mere existence of a guidebook is going to get more people interested.

Dave wasn't sure how to dig down because he simply hadn't read that far yet. I'm pretty sure he hadn't put any more time into DF since the last Dave Fortress, and then he mentioned he was only a few dozen pages in. The book isn't a relic from the 2D days or anything like that, I assure you.

...I really sound like an apologist here, but it sucks that something that could potentially bring the game to a wider audience gets flak constantly.

@envane: I think the guide was probably a big reason why Dave wanted to go through with the video series so despite the drawbacks you mentioned, it was the impetus that started this whole thing. Hopefully, will be able to to read and also take note of your suggestions by the time the next episode rolls around.

Don't buy the guide. Check out the wiki, then watch some YouTube videos. You'll not only come out ahead, but you'll save yourself some money.

If they aren't going to take the time to learn anything between play sessions then I hope they do this weekly. I think this episode went pretty well just gathering suggestions from the chat and building that way.

I wholeheartedly agree. I bought the book and it got me back into the game. It's a neat way to get you up to the point where you are confident enough with all the major mechanics of the game to experiment without killing yourself and look up stuff on the wiki whenever you hit a road block. I don't think it was ever intended as an end all be all source of knowledge, of course you will end up reading the wiki a lot.

It's a well written, fun little book and I prefer it to video guides because I can go through text at greater speed, skipping or bookmarking/coming back to passages instead of having to sit through hours and hours of video.

Dave's hilarious struggle with the unwieldy mechanics was a sight to behold, as we desperately tried to help him make it work. Eventually though, the experienced players among us may have enticed him to... open up the caves. We all knew this could only end in tragedy, but the perfect timing of the caravan saved the fortress from total destruction.

The remaining destruction will be taken care of by the fortress itself, now. It would make for a much different experience to see someone experienced work everything out, mostly because you won't see the hilarious catastrophes unravel the way they do here. I hope Dave continues, but he might have to... well, embark over again.

Also, that fortress design is painfully bad, in a way that just ends up being funny.

I like watching/listening to Dave, Vinny and Drew fumble their way through a ridiculously complicated game, but I can't think of anything I'd want to do less than playing that thing, if you could call it playing.

And I don't see much of a Mincraft parallel; what do they have in common? More power to Notch and Mojang if they saw this and made it fun.

"Made it fun"? Nah, Minecraft is a pale shadow of the fun this game brings. It's not a game that's fun to watch, but as you learn it, and control it, it's one of the most fascinating experience games have ever given me in my life. Sounds like hyperbole, but it's not. No, the game's not for everyone, but it's also not something you can judge fairly just by watching someone else play while you have a poor understanding of it.

When I become a super secret super spy the line that I'll use to greet people to see if they're legit is "The Stray Dog grabs the Stray Rooster by the first toe, right foot with her right front leg!" Hopefully they'll be able to respond accordingly.

The best part of this was half the chat telling Dave to dig as deep as he could while the other half frantically told him that it would wipe him out. Luckily, Vinny ignored the less fun oriented part of the chat.

I barely watch Dave/Drew/Vinny videos, but I do always just have them on and running in the background while I get on with something else. Not sure what it is, I guess it's the pacing is completely different to those of other QL videos.
