The only thing that scares me about Dead Space 3 is the fear it might be more an action game then a horror game. I really hope the current impression I have of that turns out to be false.

Dead Space 1 and 2 are action horror games. The genre is action, the theme is horror.@wjb said:

Thanks Inception for introducing loud, repetitive blaring noises into trailers. It was cool when you did it -- don't get me wrong -- but for the past couple years, I hear it at least once a month in a video game or movie trailer, and it sucks now.

I would like to add to BWAAAAAAAAHHHHHH makes sense that they would BWAAAAAAAHHHHHH eventually you just BWAAAAAAAHHHHHH.

Should the trailer have more... walking around lost?! It's a third person shooter! And Need for Speed is still obsessed with driving these cars everywhere.

I think this looks great, I've already seen it, but still. I am excited. I think it's too bad people are still worried about it, it's going to be a good game no matter what.

I expect them to stick closer to the things that made the original game so great. They used to talk a lot about the psychology of fear and how they were working to do more than just jump scares. Isaac was supposed to be a non-military mining worker who made weapons out of the equipment he had at hand. He was supposed to be kind of weak, on some level. It used to be a horror game.

I don't like seeing unique original IP's abandon the things that made them originally successful in favor of more generic wannabe action.

I've decided that I would be sold on Dead Space 3 if it was an insane hallucinogenic clusterfuck with no clear indication to what is really happening at any given point.

What made the original games so great? So shooting disgusting looking necromorphs who launch themselves at you and shrug off your shots? Scenes where Isaac barely escapes with his life? Fluid controls, punchy feeling weapons, brilliant UI, and incredible sound design? What of those do you feel this doesn't have?

And ... making weapons out of the items at hand? You can buy an assault rifle from the store as soon as you get there. In fact, Dead Space 3 will be the _first_ time the player actually gets to make their weapons rather than be given it as part of the tutorial (cutter) or buy them from a store (everything else).

And for a guy who 'used' to be weak, I sure killed a lot of fucking necromorphs in those first two games. Isaac was never weak or incapable of handling a cutter, if the original Dead Space had horseshit controls, it wouldn't be the classic it is. If we're two games later and Isaac is demonstrably worse at fighting these things than when he first discovered them then we have an issue. Also, action is a genre, horror is a theme. They do not run in counterpoint or drink from the same well.

Lastly, unique and original ... the game is a System Shock homage. It was originally designed as a reboot before EA decided to forget trying to get the license from the holding company that has it. What made Dead Space successful is the art design, the fluid controls, the sound, the graphics, not Isaac being a useless idiot who doesn't know how to fire a gun. That's a complete historical revision. And trust me, I replay Dead Space almost yearly, it's my 2008 GOTY.

I haven't really decided on this, yet. There isn't enough out on it. I'm hopeful, though.

I think Isaac has to die at the end, though. It's the only conclusion for his character that makes any sense to me.

If we're two games later and Isaac is demonstrably worse at fighting these things than when he first discovered them then we have an issue. ...

This precisely. Isaac was an engineer with no combat experience at the beginning of the first game; by this point he's probably killed more than most career soldiers. He's been forced by circumstances to fight through literally hordes of these monstrosities, and he may not like it, but he should sure as hell know what he's doing by now. If he was still clumsy and uncertain about pulling the trigger when a necromorph is charging at him, it would make no sense.

Characters need to develop and grow lest they stagnate, or worse: become caricatures. Isaac is past the point of being the engineer with no combat experience, and to arbitrarily keep him as such just because it's what he started out as would be doing the character and the storytelling a disservice. This is a natural progression, and it makes infinitely more sense than Isaac being inexplicably unchanged by his experiences up to this point.

Besides which, as Brodehouse said, the controls have always allowed to you mow down necromorphs like a pro, regardless of what the story tells us about Isaac's competency in a combat situation, so saying that the horror hinged on him being a weak, non-military engineer doesn't hold much water. To me, Isaac being an engineer informed his personality, his perspective on events, and the story, but the horror came from atmosphere, sound design, visual aesthetic, and the constant threat of death.
