I find it hilarious that people whine about that they changed the design into "male model-esque", "cool and edgy", "Emo'd", "Douchy" etc. When that's exactly what the old design looked like. It's an updated look and they've scaled the animeness of the design down. The white hair was cut because white hair on anyone that's not at least 40 looks goddamn ridiculous.

nah, dude that's not an image of a douchy, emo male model. he obviously looks totes badass and manly...because a japanese man designed him. Yep.

I apologize if everybody already knew this, but since the whole "HIS HAIR'S NOT WHITE!" issue is still an issue that people are talking about, I figured that I'd bring up that it appears that, while his hair is mainly dark and his jacket is mainly black with red trim, he will have some sort of mode potentially akin to the "Devil Trigger" mode in which his hair will be white and his jacket a bright red. So while he might not initially look like "good ol' Dante," that iconography and color scheme is in there for at least a little bit of the game. And for all we know, he could end up permanently looking like that by the end of the game.

No Caption Provided

To see it in action for a couple seconds, it's at around 1:07 of the trailer from TGS 2011.

As someone who only played a little bit of Devil May Cry 3, I think this looks pretty interesting and actually rather reminiscent of what I've seen of the old games. Including the slight douchiness.

@Hailinel: But thats just why it needed to be changed, he was your typical 'anime' bishi, the run of the mill same old same old. This is a reboot, nothing to do with the other games, you still keep whatever damn canon that mes was (messy.. messy mess) this is something different, out on it's own, if it flops it flops without mucking over the canon, if it does good it'll still not muss up the canon, you can even see that he's getting white hair at the top of his head.

It's different, but he's still cocky, the action looks solid and he's still using guns.

He is STILL dante.. just without white hair.. that is the only difference to be honest with you.. and I wish people wouldn't get so up in arms over it because it is growing in. This is his teen years, a reboot, so this is forging a new story on how Dante became Dante.

We need to give it a chance, if it flops then we'll say it sucks and we'll all move on, if it's good then it can still truck on in it's own little realm. Just seems your beef is Fan hurt, and your right to have it, but come on.. he's the same character, just no white hair duder.

This isn't pro or anti-Japanese I'm arguing here. I'm arguing that the changes to the aesthetics of Devil May Cry in this game are completely unnecessary. The region of the world in which the game was made has nothing to do with it. But if you're set on avoiding conversation or simply taking potshots at my particular tastes, then why respond at all?

I don't find it unnecessary one bit. I was never fond of any of the DMC games, shit camera angles and story and well.. just some white haired guy wasn't enough to make me wanna play. I played DMC4 with Nero and I enjoyed it but again.. shit story and camera angles.. ect ect.. and i kinda quit after a bit. This game however has my interest because one: Dante is overhauled into something that isn't your typical bishi. and two: I can count on Ninja Theory making a great story and believable characters. The whole "If it ain't broke don't fix it" stuff is why games who need to change don't, and just get stale and looked back on 20 years later as "Man that was fun for the time." Games have to grow, evolve as you will and adapt to gain a new audience and I dare say a lot of people are interested because Dante IS changed. Let NT have their shot, you don't have to play it or buy it if you don't want, but don't knock it because Capcom looked to NT and not another Japanese developer. They wanted something different and fresh, let's try it out?

As Jeff has noted in his discussion of Capcom's recent show, there are likely going to be a lot of people put off by the changes being made to various franchises (DMC, Lost Planet, etc.) just as they will attract a new audience. Changing things as they are isn't necessarily going to grow the audience; it could just replace people they've alienated with people that find the new directions interesting, and that new audience isn't guaranteed to be any bigger than the old one.

The game could play great; I don't know. I'm not here to judge the game on that. What bothers me is that they're tossing out essentially everything that made Dante identifiable, replacing those elements, and then asking us to accept this new guy as Dante. This isn't Zelda, where a new Link is routinely introduced and then set aside after maybe one sequel. Dante is a character that, whether you personally found him interesting or not, has been defined over the course of four games, and who has come to represent the series outside of DMC, as well. When I think Devil May Cry and Dante, I think white hair, handsome looks, cocky bastard with demon powers. Not a douchebag Anakin Skywalker lookalike, or as the first concept seemed to illustrate, a douchebag that just got roughed up at a Clash concert.

Neither of these new options are particularly appealing to me. If there's an analogue that comes to mind, it's like what Michael Bay did to the Transformers. Recognizable characters were redesigned as largely interchangeable giant robots that apparently have genitalia and racial stereotypes. Or the way that Bay plans to take the Teenage Mutant out of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. To what end? Because apparently aliens from space make for more believable humanoid turtles that are named for renaissance painters, trained in martial arts, and are avid fans of pizza.

And despite all of this, I'm not going to defend DMC's story or writing. I mean, let's face it. It's always been ridiculous. But the series has also favored the stylish side of ridiculous, whether it be the overwrought, dramatic line readings or Dante taking out a roomful of demons while casually eating pizza. That's just what Devil May Cry is.

This new Dante? Who the fuck is this guy? So he enjoys flipping the bird? OK, that's nothing new. If his new attitude is "cocky bastard that is also a bigger asshole than the old Dante," then sure, I get that. It's not what I want out of the character, but I get that. I just don't find it necessary.

@dudeglove: And now you're arguing with Youtube videos with no meaningful text to back it up. Fantastic.

You persistent line of argument across this entire site is blatantly pro-Japanese. Anything remotely outside that disgusts you for whatever reason. We get it, you don't like Western development. Unfortunately no one seems to have told you that line got old a long time ago. Non-Asian developers are not some sort of poison to video games. Not sure what Tim Burton films you're watching either.

Much like what has said, I'm not concerned about Dante's new look. I'm more concerned about whether or not the gameplay will end up as stale as DMC4's.

That trailer shows off a smart mouthing Dante and moronic over the top action, and that's totally DMC - not some gritty emo shit-fest that everyone was worried about roughly 12 months ago.

He likes to talk about Dante.

I don't care about the change in Dante in the slightest, it plays to the modern need for gothic emo vampires, and I reckon that Ninja Theory can tell a reasonable story...but their last two action games were shockingly bad in my opinion when it came to combat. I don't play Devil May Cry for the story, I play it to get SSS combos, the complexity and have style while doing so on Dante must Die. That's why I have a problem...the rants about Dante's redesign obfuscate the real issue here.

Eh I dunno about this.

The problem has never been one of aesthetic. It has to do with Ninja Theory has a track record for character action games with "stylish" protagonists. None of them have been good.

I approve of the aesthetic design changes. My interest in this series has gone from "meh" to "sure why not" since seeing what Ninja Theory is doing with it. I couldn't give less of a fuck what the color of the protagonist's hair is, but toning down the anime influence is a plus in my book.

While i don't care much for this new look.. at least he's dressed like an actual human being in this game ( in the sense that i have actually seen people dressed like this on the street) and not some weird ass nutcase with an alien's idea of "what looks cool" and some sort of belt fetish.

Dante was always a twat in my opinion.. Now he's just a believable twat.

No.

Just fucking no.

"known sexual deviant", "terrorist", god Ninja Theory, how many more "edgy" stereotypes are you going to try to shove into Dante? This is NOT Dante, fucking hell. Dante is a feel-good upbeat guy who doesn't take his enemies very seriously, this, on the other hand, is the writing of a 14 year old.

At least the combat in this trailer looks a little better than what they showed us in previous ones, so maybe the good gameplay will overshadow the abuse Dante's character has taken.

I've tried to bite my tongue and not fall for the trolling for so long, but i can't comprehend the hate for this game, i've played all the games and loved dante, but he's ran his course DMC 2, and 4 i thought were pretty bad games, Nero was, in my opinion the only redeeming feature to DMC 4. Look people this new version is one studio's vision let them have it and if the character design bothers you so much don't buy it. When i look at the new Dante i don't see crazy emo kid, i actually think 70/80's british punk, think more "Sex pistols" than "My chemical romance". Which would also be more compliant with the theme of DMC "Anarchy" and all that jazz not "i'm so upset". The new Dante screams to me "Fuck the system" type of guy and i'm not going to deny myself of it if its a good game, on the bassis of "He doesn't have white hair". Grow up

"Err, Dante looks kinda douchey, I don't think I'm gonna buy this game."

Gotta say, Dante was kind of douchey before. Giving him shorter black hair and a not-red coat does not change that. It looks like his "character" is solidly intact, so I'm not really sure what the big deal is.

Seriously, aside from the alterations to Dante's appearance, this looks like it's keeping pretty much with the spirit of the previous games. I am not seeing the big changes that everyone else seems to be.

dont know how I feel about a dante without white hair... he's just some dude... but hack and slash is always fun with gun play thrown in so let's just see how this turns out

I assume many of the changes to his look and sword will be explained through the game's story. All of the previous DMC games have shown a much older Dante. From my understanding, even the one from DMC3 was much older than he acted/looked, considering he is part demon. This seems to be the same Dante we've come to know with the same style of game with a slightly different coat of paint. His demon form gives him white hair, and I assume by the end of the game he will be stuck in that form with his iconic sword. Looks like an even further origin story from before DMC3.

you do know that this is a complete reboot? that has nothing to do with the other DMC games.

yes I was aware. Haven't they already tried to reboot? seems like they had... either way, the new dante seems very forgettable

Graphically the game looks kinda bad. Plus the design for Dante is a bit douche baggy. But if the combat is good and the events are as crazy as DMC3 was I'm in.

It would be hard to top Bayonetta though the new king(queen?) of this genre.

The real problem here is that Ninja Theory has continued to fail to convey to me why I should care about their clunky and rigid looking combat.

If there is one thing that Ninja Theory games are not.... It's clunky and rigid... They always have very fluid fighting mechanics (this seems to be backed up in Jeff's Capcom article from his hands-on experience)

Holy shit this looks awesome. Nice to hear some Combichrist in the trailer at least I think thats who it was. Been pumped for this ever since I heard about who was making it.. This series needed a shot in the arm. Also I only wish they sold shit that looked that cool at Hot Topic to the people who are hating on the "EMO" aesthetic. The old games were like a Gothic style anime so I really don't see the big difference.

@Hailinel: Yeah, no, the people judging it before they've even played it because of cosmetic differences are CLEARLY the mature ones in this.

You think it's not appropriate to say "the visual style isn't to my liking" when the visuals are on full display in a trailer?

You want to try explaining that one?

To be fair, I hadn't read your original post AND I didn't even see that the "Haters Gonna Hate" image was directed at you. I probably still would've reacted the same way, but not as any kind of sleight (or is it "slight" in this context?) to you personally. So I apologize for that. Most people aren't so articulate when they hate on this game, but you and I have gone round and round a couple of times and while I don't agree with you mostly, I dig your style. So how about we chalk this one up to bad communication, dust off our hands, and walk in opposite directions?
