I don't really care for this. I'm not one of the people who was a big fan of the series and wishes they hadn't ever changed Dante, but I find this all a little hard to take seriously.

: The main series DMC games have such a goofy B-grade plot because the devs knew their strengths weren't in writing. It's just basic glue holding the fights and setpieces together, in an over the top flavor. DMC 1 didn't market itself as a gripping plotline, nor did anyone buy it to be thrilled by Dante's deep character development. Ninja Theory DmC's writing is being pushed as one of the primary selling points of the game, and I don't know what's so confusing about the idea that people might judge the plot more harshly when it's placed center stage.

However, I don't think people would harbor even half the vitriol they do if their criticism wasn't met with blanket dismissal and name-calling. How many 'lookit these haters, you're nostalgia-blinded' comments show up on this page alone? The lead dev himself has been pulling this nonsense, which is where this escalates above the usual internet slap-fight around every god forsaken piece of content to be found. There was a specific effort to insult fans of the series who weren't happy with what they were seeing, and that effort succeeded; what's so surprising about this?

@Tidel: Ok, when you put it that way, I guess I can see where you're coming from. In the end, I guess all this arguing is moot until the full game comes out, people play it, and THEN we get more substantiated arguments based on what's there.

But surely you realize that the people who REALLY hate how this new game looks have good reasons for hating it, right? I mean, I've read stuff from both sides that voice legitimate things about the game, good and bad. I don't think there's any reason to shun one or the other on the basis of simple disagreement.

@YummyTreeSap: On stories and characters, it seems that as bad as they were, at least some people thought they had their charm in a sort-of cheesy, sort-of-not way. And I can argue that 3 of them were better than average, not just 2.

Also, I think I know where all the emotions are coming from. It boils down to NuDante's portrayal, what we've seen of the new story, and the combat and how it's different compared to the old ones in more ways than they are comfortable with. Also, Ninja Theory (or at least the lead developer guy) have been hating and shaming fans of the old games left and right, whilst also promoting their game like it's the second coming of Christ or something.

How badly people have gotten worked up over this gives me this weird combination of amusement and hatred. The only thing DMC games ever had going for them was the ambience and gameplay. Dante has always been a terrible character, the stories have always been even worse. There've been four games in the main series and only two of them have been better than average. I just can't comprehend at all where all this emotional attachment to this is coming from and why a different direction elicits so much passioned anger and feelings of personal injustice.

I played the demo and it seemed at least playable. Aesthetics aside, Dante hardly felt much different to the usual Dante—as far as I know the only defining quality of that character was that he's a goddamn smartass who only talks in horrible puns. Yep, this character is Dante, all right.

@Nettacki: Fine. But only one because I refuse to watch it again.

Premise: Anytime Dante tries to do something cool/clever he comes off mean/unlikeable. He’s trying too hard, ergo just bad.

That’s not a fact, it’s an opinion. His opinion is based on his feelings about things, his belief in what’s happened behind the scenes, a sense of what should be and is not – the clips are not objective evidence, they are interpretive. He is reading them a specific way to fit with his conclusion – his “if this, then this” is based entirely on his own bias. I can use the same footage to support a completely opposite opinion and it couldn’t be proven wrong.

This guy can opine all he wants; people can agree. I don’t care. I am bothered when this is trotted out as THE TRUTH ABOUT DANTE because it isn’t – it’s not well reasoned and it never rises above opinion. Stating an opinion is not the same thing as presenting an argument, despite what the internet empowers a lot of people to believe.

@MasonL87 Absolutely repulsive right? The other day I went to my bank to cash my check and the teller transforms into a demon witch lady (not much different from before if you ask me) and if I hadn't had my two trusty pistols and blown her head ALL the way back to hell I would have never gotten my money! Damn you, Obama!

@Blimble: He says 'Dante is bad because X' and then shows 'G' but pretends it is 'X'. I don't know how anyone can watch that video and think it's logically sound. The whole thing is built on faulty premises. He is bad because he's 'caught between two characters'? That presumes the brief, early glimpse of Dante summed up everything about him in twenty seconds of trailer. Dante is 'trying too hard' because he says fuck a lot? That's an opinion that presumes an absolute truth about what it means to swear a lot. Etc. etc. There is no there, there.

Good day.

Are you saying he didn't change it? The point isn't about his intentions it is that the character is spilt between two personalities and why that doesn't work which is backed up with what is in fact evidence@Tidel said:

there's nothing he shows that proves his statement.

He doesn't just guess stuff he says Dante is bad because x and then shows clips that back up his statement. Those clips do support his point, I don't know how you can deny it

@Blimble: That's the issue, duder -- he backs up his statements with conjecture, not evidence. Like, his first point, about Dante being a bad character because Tameem caved to fan pressure and changed new Dante from smoking emo to quipping punk -- that assumes so much about the developer's intentions and motivations, and that Dante has actually changed from first glance to now. I dispute that assessment. He doesn't know, he's just guessing; there's nothing he shows that proves his statement. He has a thesis and is looking for 'facts' to support it. It isn't an educated option, just a thorough one.

@Tidel: But the statements are backed up. Yeah it is an opinion but if you can back up your opinion like he does in the video then it is an educated one. You can't just say he has made it all up when he has shown evidence from the original source why he Dante is a bad character

I wish this game had just stayed the way it was in the very first trailer, with drug-addled Dante. The way they attempted to pander to people like myself, fans of the actual series, by making this travesty of a creature for a protagonist is actually several times worse. After all the bad PR, all the problems are just exacerbated. NT constantly shits all over the old games, and then when the demo comes out it's proven to not even be a pale shadow of them. If they had stuck with their guns despite all the backlash, at least this reboot would be an actual reboot, rather than a teen fiction reinterpretation of what has always been a very cheesy series.

@Blimble:

The whole thing is one guy laying out a bunch of gripes, conjecture and opinion. A certain type of person trots this out in every DmC talkback as proof that Dante is a bad character. But there’s not one premise he makes that is sound (or agreeable). It’s just a bunch of opinion masquerading as absolutes to prove something.

I just don't get all the rage sent at this game. I have played all but one DMC (the universally panned DMC 2) and watching these trailers, looking at the combat, and seeing footage of the demo all I see is.... Updated DMC to user slightly more refined mechanics and Dante as a young guy instead of older and as a result acting even slightly more smart ass than he used to. Other than having a new haircut (really, who cares) and his hair being black the character seems to be mostly what I imagine a younger Dante would be.

The lack of a proper lock-on or any on-screen indicator to show me what Dante is targeting (Ala Bayonetta) has resulted in a fair deal of frustration. I never know who Dante may attack in a tightly packed group of enemies until I commit to an action (Which makes Parrying very hairy), if Dante will attack them and not go zooming off in the opposite direction when doing moves with directional inputs into a wall for no reason, or if he's going to randomly change targets mid-combo because the auto-lock deems it so.

The Demon Dodge mechanic ends up obliterating the scoring system in the game which in turn breaks mission ranking requirements as damage is no longer a factor. The game is tuned around expecting the player to gradually build through style ranks and not take damage to perform well, but a basic mechanic undermines that with a very low-risk, obscenely high reward dodge to the point where damage is no longer a concern as Dante can bounce up and down the style meter without losing much for it.

Guns are very lame in this game and they're a huge step back to previous games. Game regularly employs enemies that force specific weapon stances which flies in the face of what DMC has become from 3-4 and regresses to enemies not much more complicated than DMC3 which is a significant step back from DMC4. Devil Trigger is very poor, takes forever to build and does little to augment Dante's abilities other than acting as a full-screen launcher and damage boost while DMC4's DT added tons of mobility and augmented specific abilities creating tons of unique combo opportunities. Jump cancels are a joke and it's clear the game was never designed with them in mind ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2vz5CJU8DM ). Dante no longer has momentum in the air which was one of DMC4's best and most subtle additions which opened up a ton of potential for combos.

There's a lot to be annoyed about here that goes beyond "ZOMG HAIR."

@SnakeEyes327: I actually liked DMC4. Combat system was great. Changing style mid-combo with Dante and Nero was great to use as well. Only thing I don't liked was the backtracking and returning boss fights.

I think this game looks great and the demo played great. I'm looking forward to it.

@SlashDance: Ninja Theory/Capcom put out enough cutscene and gameplay footage as well as interviews to warrant the video fully. Please tell me how HyperBitHero was able to glean that much information for a six minute long video, if you think media for DmC is so sparse.

Though, your unneeded vulgarity does bring to mind the silly edginess DmC's Dante outputs. I doubt you even watched the video. I can imagine you just glancing at the title and throwing your hands up in the air in outrage.

Whine, whine, whine. I played the demo and like punk rocker Dante. People need to get over it having the same name and treat it like a new game. Take a game for what it is, not what title they decide to slap on it.

And what the game is is a mediocre hack 'n' slash with, judging from all the preview material that has been released (Capcom/NT admitted we've seen "about 70%" of the game), an embarrassingly bad story.

This trailer was a lot better than the others because there's was only three lines of dialogue. I kind of like the art-design in the new DMC, but almost all of the writing is just such fucking horseshit, sophomoric analogues for real life events and cursing thrown around left and right in an embarrassing juvenile manner. Never played a DMC before, but I still have no interest in new Dante.
