Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi Has Rectangular Pecs

At least it doesn't take Goku 15 games to kill Frieza.

I watched two fights and based on what I've seen, it's just Tenkaichi 3(Or whichever flavor you prefer) with some silly gameplay additions. Like the past two or three DBZ titles, I'll pass.

Please stop buying these, guys. My awesome Shonen-filled childhood takes another hit with each half-assed release.

@RE_Player92: lawl at young ryan. Very monotone and proper. He's come a long way :)

Also, I felt the same way about Budokai 3. I really don't like this tenkaichi business. Plus, Burst Limit didn't have the same depth with storytelling. I would kill for a new budokai that kept the story stuff in there.

Have they changed anything since Tenkaichi 3? Not that I have more than an academic interest in this, since every game with "tenkaichi" in the name has been absolute shit. "Oh we have 150 characters in more or less the same game we made 3 years ago, which in and of itself was shit to begin with".

They should've just stopped at Budokai 3. You know, to avoid raping my childhood.

They didn't show any footage of the game being played- how did you think this looked good?

I'd say over half of the trailer is gameplay footage, you're crazy.

I've never liked the Tenkaichi games, Raging Blast was way too much like them for me to get into it, and while Burst Limit was serviceable, it was still lacking something the original Budokai games had.

Call me backwards, but the DBZ game I probably spent the most time with was Shin Budokai 2 on the PSP. Just about everybody I worked with overnight owned a copy, and the PSPs would come out during our lunch break. I'd really like it if they'd make a proper sequel to that -- it's deeper than I think most people give it credit for.

What they need to do for the consoles is get Toriyama to pen a new story that's designed to work well with the game, add some fresh faces to the cast, and allow you to use a character creator for the main protagonist. Keep all the major players around for cameos and the versus modes, but seriously, we don't need to play through the same stories with every iteration. The game might end up being complete garbage, but at least they'd have tried to do something different for once.

I still don't get how people can get excited about a fighting game that is all about characters that just get many times stronger than each other, so its never a real fight. Also, this was dumb in the show, but I still watched. I appreciate the redone animated cutscenes.

What was the point of Tien and Yamcha even being there. I have never seen more useless characters. Yes, they were powerful in DB, relatively, but even then, as characters they sucked.

I knew someone was gonna say this... I said reanimate. Kai is just a remastered Z that was edited down. It still looks like an anime from the mid 90's for the most part. I want a complete reanimation.

I have to agree there. The quality of animation that they use in the KAI intros are exactly what I want my 2011 DBZ to look like.

But realisticly, that must be an expensive undertaking and then they will wonder "Is it worth it?"

Whatever happened to the good old Budokai games. I still play 3 a lot. And Burst Limit was cool, why no Burst Limit 2? sigh. Someone need to complain to them about this or something.

Lol. Believe it or not, Ryan's review of this game was the scale tipping factor in me buying this game. And I'm so glad I did. Budokai 3, to this day, is the BEST DBZ fighting game I've played.

The Budokai series is SO MUCH BETTER than Budokai Tenkaichi. I got Budokai 2, and I was so dissapointed when I'd traded in my PS2 games to get Tenkaichi- It's nothing like a fighting game, it's slow, all the characters are just re-skins of each other, they took away the capsule-equipping system which I LOVE...

I mean- the whole thing with buying and collecting all the capsules in the game was such a fun aside, and it unlocked new moves, and you could choose which moves you had on each character and unlock crazy nutty stuff like Metal Frieza... I want EVERY fighting game to have that! It made the game worth playing for like twice as long!

The Tenkaichi series is a bag o crap. It's not what fans of the series want (which-- I've grown out of the series obviously) and it's not what fans of fighting games want. They're not good games no matter what angle you come at it from.

I don't know a single thing about Naruto, but those games look pretty badass aswell.

EDIT-- Budokai is a fucking awesome game. Transforming mid-fight feels great, transforming 3 times is badass, stacking up Kamehamehas on your guy to make them more powerful is great, everyone having a unique ultra move is great, whacky stuff like the Senzu Bean is awesome, the weird boardgame thing in Budokai 2 was fun, fusing with people is SUPER cool, and the fact that you can fuse WRONG and BE STUCK LIKE THAT- then the What-If scenario stuff? I'm gonna say it: Budokai 2 is in like my Top 5.

That's not true, the 16 bit games were all out in Europe, where Dragon Ball and DBZ were popular since the eighties. I personally had the Mega Drive one, which I bought off the shelf. But if it wasn't known in the US and the games weren't released there I guess his line makes sense.

Will you also find me too harsh if I point out that equating "not in the US" to "not being released outside Japan" shows a bit of a smug ethnocentrism there? I do find it quite funny.

I just assumed that since I've never seen a non-Japanese rom for any 16-bit DBZ game that it was safe to assume.

Although considering you didn't know how DBZ existed in America, I don't see why I'm the bad guy for not knowing about DBZ in Europe. Let's call it even.

To bring this back around to something related to where it started, here's Jeff and Ryan's review of one of the first widely available DBZ game released in America! (I guess Ryan did play those snes games):

@xobballox: I think what we saw first is a definite factor. While I saw a small chunk of Z in English originally, when I watched the show proper (starting from Dragonball) and read the manga, I watched it in Japanese, and I just can't look back. Anywho, if you ever go back and watch Z (or some classic Dragonball to go along with it), give the Japanese version a shot, since you mention you like Japanese voices. His voice might make sense with that context.

And thanks for your input, as well as not taking my comment negatively. :) I've been flamed to hell in the past for my intense dislike of the US dub/music, believe it or not. ;) To each his own!

@xobballox: Just curious why you hate his original Japanese voice so much? I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of hate for his voice here, and on most US-centric websites I've been on (shockingly not on most Europe sites, where they had the excellent Spanish dub or just left it in Japanese). Is it just because you heard the English voice first at the start of Z on Toonami or Cartoon Network, and can't imagine another voice? I wonder how many people with that opinion have actually seen more than one episode of the Japanese show or even any of Dragonball. Not trying to sound "zomg, you didn't watch the original!" elitist, but I'm genuinely curious. :)

I've heard people mention that he sounds too "young", but that's kind of missing the point. While it's not shown very well in this trailer, Goku's Japanese VA (and Gohan's, and Goten's; they're all the same person) has an impressive range from sounding incredibly child-like to super serious and flips on a whim when needed. This is also in-line with the character; Goku's initial innocence versus his maturity to world-saviour are reflected in the Japanese performances from the first episode of Dragonball when he meets Bulma right up until he's sizing up Cell in Z. In contrast, coming from that, all I hear when I watch the dub is a bunch of guys with heavy American accents shouting and grunting at each other (no offense to fans of that version!).

Anyway, sorry to derail this!

Also, with regards to the music in that trailer, it sounds far more like what you'd hear in a random Funimation dub replacement. I've heard over at daizex.com that we may be also getting the option of some Japanese music more akin to Shunsuke Kikuchi's mix of orchestral/80's rock from the original show, which would be an awesome alternative option.

I think a big part of it is that I originally saw the show as an 8 year old in English, the other part being he just sounds so very feminine in Japanese to me. I usually much prefer Japanese voices in anime to English, as English dubs in animes are usually shitty, with the exception of some great ones like Samurai Champloo.

The review has a bunch of factual mistakes, though. For instance, he says it's the first DBZ game to have beam fights, but all the 16 bit era DBZ games had them already.

Also, young Ryan looks like old Ryan's evil twin for some reason.

The beam fight thing was the only "error" I heard, and it seems a little silly to call him on that considering none of those games were released outside Japan. In fact, neither had the show itself at that time, really...

I love DBZ but they haven't made a good game since Tenkaichi 3 (some would say since Budokai 3).

While the new anime cutscenes look gorgeous, I can't say the same for the direction they took with the actual game's visuals. Why don't they return to the colorful, solid color style? The current one makes it look low-tech. They also need to vary characters a little bit more in their special abilities. The environments need to get more colorful and less ps2 looking. And the special moves have to get even more ridiculous a la Ninja Storm, it doesn't matter if it doesn't imitate the anime perfectly.

Goddamn it, just let Cyberconnect 2 take over! (if only)

@Liquidus: Do people still love DBZ?Yes?Then duh they will keep buying this ,pretty dumb question.I personally think it looks good I got upset that it wasn't a 2d fighter but this one promises more adventure style story gameplay which I guess is nice.I just hope they give it the funimation dub and music if I have to listen to those awful japanese voices and annoying music I would throw the disc against the wall.
