Well there are still players Duking it out online now. We play on Duke Matcher. Its a free community launcher that connects players. It is still loads of fun and never gets boring! They don't make them like they used to. http://www.dukematches.net

Dukematch was a hell of a thing, but I could only play one-on-one by modem. Now you can have so many dukes at once.

This could become the Ultimate videogame.

man, it's like someone gets it right. And no longing having to use phone modems and some dumb pack in dial up modem companies like Total Entertainment Network

So I guess this means we will be hearing about a new duke game very soon then. I gotta say I didnt hate DNF as much as everyone else did, at least not until I knew everyone else hated it.

Seems I've been proven wrong. Plenty of interest!

I suppose It's a bit like going back to a childhood movie I LOVED, and after watching it now, part of that magic is gone. Oh well.

I'm glad to see that Duke lives on!! :)

Ah, well that is what that steam update for Duke was the other day! Neat. I'll fire it up tomorrow and see if anyone is playing.

Seeing as I already have the atomic edition, I might give this a spin sometime.

HELL. YES.

Back in the day, I used to be heavily into the Build engine, creating Dukematch levels for my boss and me to play against each other. My favourite thing to do was to use all the stone and wood textures to create Quake-style levels, complete with appropriate-looking teleporters that took you different places if you entered from different sides.

Looking back, I'm pretty sure my proficiency with the Build engine was directly proportional to how doomed (if you pardon the allusion) my relationship with my then-girlfriend was.

This makes me want to try and see if Duke would work with my MacBook and Dualshock 3. Contemplating picking it up from GOG...although I've never bought anything from GOG or Steam...ever.

Is it just me or is the idea of playing these old shooters with a bunch of random people online, seem boring in this day and age? I think the turning point of 'fun' online play started with, the Quake and Unreal series, on up.

The reason I found older shooters like, Doom II, Descent, Duke3D, fun and exciting was due to the fact that it was like breaking new ground. That excitement of having people you actually knew in person, connect to your PC, getting yelled at by your parents for the phone ringing, and then just having a blast, and just being amazed that you could actually see and interact with your friends in digital form.

Today, this just looks like a cash grab. Only because this existed years prior, and now it's streamlined. How many "new" gamers are actually going to be interested in this?

Still plenty fun to plenty of people, going by how many active communities there are for these games.

How is it a cash grab, though? It's a free addition, and even if it weren't, people who aren't interested wouldn't buy it.

I don't know, I still think Descent and Doom 1 are incredibly fun online. I was never all that much of a Duke 3D or Doom II fan though, and at least Descent still seems to find new players, I played co-op with a couple of kids who were apparently playing it for the first time last summer (probably true for Duke 3D too, since Steam is a much more widely known store than GOG).

What I've played of the Duke Nukem 3D Megaton Edition's multiplayer on Steam has been pretty shitty though, half the time you can't connect to the other players, desyncing and random errors are really common and the interface for hosting/joining games could be quite a bit better, but it's pretty cool that they've hooked it up to the Steam workshop, making it pretty easy to find and download the community maps (which in my opinion are the highlight of the game, never really liked the level design in the originals, especially not for multiplayer).

Man, Devolver is quickly becoming one of my new favorite things. Megaton Edition, Shadow Warrior remake and Redux... if they grab that elusive Blood license, it'll be in great hands.

The other playable characters should be Ash from Evil Dead and Nada from They Live. They've come to reclaim their catchphrases.

Wait. Duke Nukem 3D always had online multiplayer through Kali and similar IPX-to-online services, and later natively through source ports. Even the Megaton Edition on Steam has had it for about 6 months, though the Steam version is ridiculously unstable.
