This trailer was way more exciting than any of the in-game stuff they've shown. XD

You realize they had a live demo at E3, a gameplay trailer, and a 40 minute live stream?

They're clearly showing CGI trailers because the gameplay looks like WoW circa Burning Crusade, which is only one of several early warning signs.

The fact that the devs have taken to calling it a “story-driven MMO” is also mildly disturbing, especially when you consider that WoW's gradual slide from open-world grinding towards guided narrative has made it a less rewarding experience for many veterans of the game. At the same time, Rift has been praised for uniting solitary players around world events to revitalise the PUG. For a new MMO to wear its story so visibly on its sleeve  – and, furthermore, for it to have skill trees at least partly based on light/dark choices – raises the question of whether bolting the trappings of Bioware's single-player RPGs to a very traditional-looking MMO is a wise idea. There has to be some risk that the freedom of action that usually compensates for the many failings of the traditional MMO will be negated by a restrictive emphasis on binary decision-making.

Many people who play MMOs enjoy rolling around doing their own thing and reveling in the lack of structure. I'm no RPer, but if I had any lingering affection for the Star Wars mythos, I'd be looking for a game that dumped me in the middle of the action and let me start crafting Ewok-fur backpacks. Maybe I'm jaded, but the thought of being forced to participate in yet another epic story arc with no discernible conclusion is an immediate turn-off.

If you want evidence that this game may be broken at a deep level, consider the questionable innovation of party members rolling dice to see who gets to talk to an NPC and make decisions that will impact faction rep. While I find the idea of cross-faction grouping and competing for influence quite interesting, I don't know how rewarding it would be to play through what looks like an old-school MMO with some random douche making my decisions for me. If I wanted to do that, I'd raid in WoW.

I'm putting this in with Diablo 3 in the "3 years of waiting is too fucking long" category.
I'm with you guys and this is coming from a beta participant and someone who will play damn near any MMO. It has been far too long and the magic has slowly worn off. It's just hard for me to care anymore.
Really people? You would rather a rushed out MMO rather then one that is taking a long time to come out because they are still working on it, simply because you're impatient?
Don't even play that card. Pushing a game back doesn't mean that it's going to be more polished either. Too Human, GT5, FF13, FF14, and a bunch of other games had the hell delayed out of them. They weren't horrible games by any means(well 14 kinda was), but I think anyone could easily make a case none of those games were worth the wait. And judging by how SWTOR is coming along, I personally think it's going to end up on this list too. "Yo dawg, we got a new flashpoint." "...ok. We know they're in there. Ummm, what about a release date?" "CHECK OUT THIS NEW SPACESHIP." "That's nice and all, but how abo-" "BAM. CHECK OUT THIS BRAND NEW CGI TRAILER THAT MISREPRESENTS THE GAME IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE." "That was pretty cool. Can you guys-" "........AND YOU GET A BRAND NEW SPACESHIP." "Ok..."   It has nothing to do with being impatient. At this point, it's more like this game obviously won't live up the hype. We've all seen this trend before with other games and some of us are just sick of it. It's nice you're still excited for it, but some of us are just done. We were on board at first, but this train looks like it's never going to end and we just want off.
You make a decent argument, but like any one else's, your forget it is only one side. Okay, so those games failed, what makes you think this one will? Plenty of games have released and become extremely successful after such a long delay. Look at WoW, that took a god-awful amount of time but finally released and is a smash-hit. The point is you ran out your hype meter because BioWare doesn't know how to cater to that type of emotion. They should have held off with all these stupid trailers and waited until they were ready, only releasing information in tid-bits on their website and major content at E3.

It's sad, I will probably get this for one month and use up the story-line and drop it as soon as any BS multi-player parts pop up. I just cannot see this being more than a story-based campaign with the addition of multi-player pieces that eventually turns into a bland sandbox.

If WoW has taught us anything, it's that MMO gameplay rarely lives up to the kick-ass cinematics. That said, I'll probably try this anyway on the strength of the brand.

I really hope this isn't a hit, its obviously part of the MMO movement wow stirred up and now everyone wants to get a money machine out there... sorry to say but this probably won't be a better game than wow, star wars has alot of lore but not even close to Warcraft. I wish companies would stop trying to get these things running, and keep innovating. I gotta say E3 is VERY disappointing so far, i don't think theres any games i'm looking forward to... maybe dark souls?? I wish the witcher 2 patch would show up already... i hate broken games.

Are you kidding?

Although warcraft has a lot of lore, it's not even close to the amount of lore that has been generated for Star wars. Warcraft has what 10 books and 4 games?

Star Wars' count would be 6 movies, some 100 if not more books and at least 10 games, but probably more. warcrafts lore is just a fraction of what exsists for Star Wars.

i don't think your counting in the right way, the movies combined don't even have lore to match half the warcraft 3 lore. i'm talking more events, more adventures, more characters, and a much more integrated story. I don't know what the books of either are about, but strictly speaking the 3 games(+ frozen throne) without wow, have 10 times more lore than the 6 star wars movies, combined. Just to make it clear, i don't play wow, i'm not some fanboy, i just played warcraft series. If we are counting wow, i don't think a thousand books could have more lore than what wow has(though a good bunch of it is shitty). Anw warcraft has like an integrated story of not only where each race comes from, how they evolved and how interact but also alot of backround mythology type stuff about titans and creation of the world.

Ha, ha. WoW has more "lore" than Star Wars. Warcraft was released in 1994 and the first Star Wars movie was 1977. You're actually arguing that a 17 year old franchise has more "lore" than a 34 year old franchise.

@gamefreak9:

Ok, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

I'm a bit of both a warcraft and Star Wars nut, and I own all the warcraft books out to date, as well as all the games.

As for Star Wars I've got most of the books, and although a lot of them focus on the core star wars characters, Luke, Leia, Han Solo. They're kids etc. there are a lot of them that focus on totally different characters and parts of the unvierse, fleshing out a lot of backstory for several of the different planets, races and groups that populate the Star Wars universe. They also cover different time periods, just like some of the warcraft books do.

I still believe Star Wars' lore is way more extensive then warcraft's. If you haven't read or looked at a few star wars books I don't think you can really apriciate the wealth of SW lore thats out there. Add all the SW games to that, everything from the 1st person shooters to the KOTOR games which contain tons of lore. Easily on par with the warcraft games except wow imo.

You also have to remember that Star Wars lore has been generated since the first movie came out in in 77, while warcraft has only existed since 94.

Why oh Why is this a mmorpg, they could have put out two of these by now if it was just a normal KOTR, sold millions of games, made lots of money and more importanly i would have bought it. I dont even find enough time to play COD online let alone this, sucha shame.

There is a difference between rushed out and taking your sweet ass time with it. This thing already costs hundreds of millions of dollars in production, more than any game ever done by EA and we are 3 years in this thing with STILL no release date in sight, or open beta date or anything. For fuck sake, they still brag around saying they have whole features unannounced. What the fuck? Do like very goddamn mmo on the planet. Ship it and patch the fuck out of it.

This is by far E311's biggest dissappointment for me. No release date in sight or open beta date either. There is no way in hell this game ships this fiscal year and it totally should.

Part of me knows this has little to do with the game (peek at some elements, different combat styles, the spaceship arcade thing, a few characters), but another part just loves seeing the eye candy.

I totally get why people feel strung out, though.  It's strange to hear about a game so far in advance it's almost like the proverbial carrying of a torch, even though I guess we could just shelve any  enthusiasm we might have and enjoy the free light show until we have something to critically evaluate.

From what I've seen so far, I don't want them to be close to finishing. I hope they put more time into it and get good beta feedback so they don't wind up doing a running battle trying to fix things post release. I guess yet another part of me doesn't want Bioware to implode.

I find those reasonings hollow - no insult to you, though I can see if all the sums of the details add up into enough of a "buy". It is simply odd to me that the one that does present "more" (TOR) is being yelled at for doing so. That being said, I suppose for some - it could fall into the realm of ridiculous hype - to "look at what we have" thrown at one's face. So, in a sense - poor PR as you said. But hype is a personal perception (and marketing tool, which inherently makes it trumpeted by the devil, Bobby Boucher) that can be filtered, at least that is how I see it.

In the end, GW2 was announced a year before TOR and both have yet to announce a release date. (Watch GW2 announce one on the E3 floor and shut me up, heh). Regardless, when the game comes out - it will matter little. Unless you feel PR is fucking with you on a personal level, rather then just fucking with everyone in general as they are designed to do, I'd hope most people would buy the game on its quality and nothing else.

This trailer was a huge disappointment. I'm still pumped about the game, but after being strung along one E3 after the next I expected a hell of a a lot more than a pre-rendered trailer that just strung together bits of the two previous trailers and STILL didn't give a release date. On top of this is the fact that you'll only be able to buy a digital copy of TOR through Origin. Thanks for limiting consumer options while STILL not giving us the one thing we want, Bioware.

@PrimeSynergy:   I do not understand how people can feel this way about TOR and not about GW2? Just out of curiousity.

I can't really give you an answer, but I think it's because of how the two games are being handled PR wise. SWTOR is given these grandiose trailers with new info every week and so on and so on. You may even get a big announcement every month or so. It gives off the impression a ton of progress is being made, but at the same time with nothing resembling a release date or anything even close to it it's hard to really feel any of that progress if that makes sense. GW2 is given maybe a small snippet here and small snippet there and maybe a big announcement every few months if that. It's like a stripper. It's teasing you by revealing piece by piece so you'll stay tuned for the whole ride. Also, I think GW2 is getting more of a pass just because of the numbers of risks it is taking by trying to be so radically different instead of just another "right click this dude" game.

@tourgen: Some "old gameplay" from PAX East can be found here on GiantBomb in the form of the Taral V Walkthrough (16 Minute Run). It is staged, it is marketing - but if you can take out the employee bias it did look enjoyable to me - and a majority of attendees at PAX thought so as well. This build was, of course, several times old by the time it hit the floor of PAX East back in March 2011 and has gone over some decidedly different "improvements" since then.  I would be very surprised if something comparable to the Taral V Walkthrough didn't make itself shown on the floor of E3 (being such a highly publicized convention) for people to get their hands on. Stay tuned for game play footage of similar nature.
There was also leaked footage of beta play that probably can be found. It looked rather lonely and simple, though the story elements were still good. That again was an old build. In general - it is best not to let any gameplay feature strictly guide your choice until the game is released. People, especially marketing, can angle whatever they see fit. This is the whole point of GB or other trust-worthy game review sites to deliver an unbiased opinion.

Hype and Hate. Just fillers until the concrete stuff lands.

Is there video of the actual game play anywhere? BTW the videos on this site load like molasses. Very frustrating!

Really people? You would rather a rushed out MMO rather then one that is taking a long time to come out because they are still working on it, simply because you're impatient?

I'm not impatient with the developers.  Feel free to take the time.  I'm impatient with the PR department.  This game would have been huge even if you didn't start pimping it out three friggin years in advance! That's what annoys me.  We're seeing all these great looking CG trailers that mean nothing when we should be seeing more game play trailers.  Hell we should actually start getting more actual hands on previews.
We just got a E3 trailer with a bunch of features and gameplay footage yesterday.

are they making a movie or a game? because it really looks like to me they are making a movie.

If they gameplay is so terrible that you can't show it in a trailer at this point. Give up an release a 2hr CGI movie to recover your cash.

See above, and theres a gameplay hands on at E3.

I was excited when they announced this game. Years later I couldn't give a fuck.

I'm rapidly joining you on this one.
I'm putting this in with Diablo 3 in the "3 years of waiting is too fucking long" category.
I'm with you guys and this is coming from a beta participant and someone who will play damn near any MMO. It has been far too long and the magic has slowly worn off. It's just hard for me to care anymore.

Why does length of game development even matter at all.. it's just you being impatient. It's not like it's been in development since the 90s like some other game. I want an MMO to be as polished as possible, not be rushed out simply so you can stop being hyped, length of development has nothing to do with how hyped I am, or how much I want to play the game, and how I think it looks. Especially with an MMO. With an MMO I don't want it to be rushed out.

The release date and how long it's been in development have absolutely no effect on how I think the game looks. It's your own fault if you're somebody who gets overhyped with unrealistic expectations simply because something has been in development for a long time

I do not understand how people can feel this way about TOR and not about GW2? Just out of curiousity.
