This looks exciting. Buuuuuuut, seems like they're leaning kinda heavy on the male cast this time around. Like, in the other trailer I think I saw 2 women on the character line up at the end.

Looks good so far. The music is very evocative of Kingdom Hearts, and that's a big plus for me.

My hopes: it isn't "easy" (some interview with developer said it was going to be a very easy game) and that the story is more personal than political (I didn't like 12's story and didn't play 13 for this reason.)

Love me some JRPG nonsense. Looks great and the setting seems cool.

Those are some Iconic FF monsters right there. Looks like they pulled them straight from FF7 or 8.

What they didn't tell you is this was ran on the PS4 since the XBONE servers for the cloud computing aren't up yet in order to do the processing. Huehuehue

I wasn't even aware it was an option you guys had. I'd always assumed it had something to do with the early site's code and that feature was removed at some point.

Hrm... Consider me intrigued. If the Open World + Story are solid and the game is challenging, this might be a win.

hmmmmm, so they couldn't live up to that prerender they did 7 years ago just like FF13 when you compare pre render and it's final in game. This does really document a story how Square handles their production even if it's through a microcosm of trailers released ever 4 years. They are still using PS2 assets, but their upping the resolution and adding new particle effects. I seriously hope Eidos is helping square with tech that isn't a PSP.

Another generic game with the guise of a Final Fantasy logo on it. If I wanted to play a game like God of War or Infamous, I would play those.

But...I've given up on SE making a real FF game now for a long time, so I wasn't expecting much this time around.

Is this real-time combat, then? And isn't that a big, fat, hairy change for the franchise? I've never played an FF game, but the lack of gamer-rage on the change is surprising. This looks very interesting to me, and I never got into JRPGs.

This...looks...INCREDIBLE

Fast paced, exciting combat with brilliant music and gorgeous graphics? Please! I mean, It's not a real Final Fantasy because you're not waiting for your turn to cast Thundaga or collecting Triple Triad cards, right?

That stumbling animation right at the start had me worried for a bit, as did the slightly disorientating section where the guy was warping around on the side of the building. The latter felt very Kingdom Hearts-y, for better or worse. I was hoping that it wouldn't be too similar to that since I have a few hangups with that system, but it's still too early to tell.

I liked the music, also very remnicent of Kingdom Hearts, but couldn't quite figure out how the battle system worked. It seems like you have a bunch of "swords" of various sizes and functions that you can summon, but I'm not sure if it was something you had to switch manually or of they were more like the Deck commands in KH. It didn't seem to switch everytime an attack was used, but it did sometimes.

Overall I'm onboard, I do really like the look of it so I'm hopeful that something good will come out of it after all this time.

Is anyone else reminded of platinum games by this. I think it looks pretty neat and I'm looking forward to playing this whenever the hell it comes out.

Does anyone else wish that after this square would just make a new final fantasy that's a throwback to the old days. They could focus on a good story, combat and music. I'm guessing there would be significantly less production costs and millions of fans would absolutely love something akin to FF 4/6, of course with modern day pixel art. That would be amazing.

@charlee_coco: I wouldn't say that's entirely true. From what I understood and have seen is that Square indeed maintain a mantra of creating unique stories with each instalment including new heroes and villains (ignoring the direct sequels in comparatively recent years) but have in fact created ties to previous games with familiar elements such as story themes, enemy types, summons and magic to name a few. The stories for example have centred around a crystal of some form in nearly every instalment. With so many similarities concerning the design I would certainly say Final Fantasy has/had a feeling.

Personally I haven't truly loved an FF game since 9. This in turn looks like it would be worth playing but I worry the Final Fantasy game I want to play just isn't a possibility considering how games and the industry have progressed.

I haven't cared about this franchise since the previous decade, but seeing all those silly old FF monsters trudging around "fantasy reality-based" buildings is kind of interesting.

Is it just me or have the character designs for his close pals changed from those early trailers?

I was actually thinking this at some point during this video so not just you. Also the music at around 1 minute in when descending the building almost sounds like it's lifted from the FF8 intro.

edit: Oh, and this is not a bad thing. I enjoyed FF8 sorta kinda too!

The KH team worked on this so I'm super hyped for the combat. I think the combat mechanics in the KH series are under appreciated because a lot of people only played the original game and don't know how the systems have evolved throughout the series.

It's just a reference to it being a fantasy game set in a more realistic, modern setting.

This game has always been presented as Kingdom Hearts II combined with Advent Children, and it certainly does look like that. I'm sure Nomura's played Bayonetta by now, but this game was always gonna look like that, as so many elements were already used in KH2 but on a much smaller-scale. Anyone who's experienced the climax to KH2 knows what I'm talking about -- that shit was crazy at the time and to this day my favorite sequence of final bosses.

In addition to that, Nomura's a known fan of Battlefield Bad Company and the genre in general, and he wanted to include some of those scripted sequences and interactive cutscenes in his own games. Originally all 3 characters were playable, and the guy with the gun would turn the game into a third-person shooter, but it seems that idea may have been replaced with the assist attacks shown in this trailer.

So that's where some of his inspiration comes from.

As for classical FFs... They've continued to make those, y'know. They did 4 Heroes of Light a few years back, and its spiritual successor Bravely Default is coming to Europe later this year and the North America in 2014. That game is, for all intents and purposes, an FF game, and might just be what you're looking for.

@axersia: That sounds like a fantastic combination and hopefully they pull it off. Back when it came out I finished KH2 and I know exactly what you're talking about. That final bit was pretty crazy and I loved it at the time.

I had no idea Nomura was a Bad Company fan. Interesting.

Finally, There's definitely no shortage of "Final Fantasy esque games", but I'm sure Versus/15 took an absolute TON of production values and especially in their situation it would do them well financially to make a main line Final Fantasy game akin to the old school ones next time around. I'm sure fans, including myself, would go crazy over that. I was aware of Bravely default, but I understand it was plagued by gross microtransactions. I'll have to check 4 heroes of light though. Thanks.

Edit: I think I'm mistaken about bravely default, as I just noticed you mention it hasn't come out yet. I recall some final fantasy game that came out for the App store and it had problems with microtransactions.
