E3 2014: Aonuma Would Like to Show You Something Called Zelda for Wii U

I haven't seen anyone mention this yet. When they say there is no order to the dungeons do they mean you can go to any one at any time but you might not be able to progress without a certain item from another dungeon?

@dicksocrates: @dicksocrates: This is not running on a WiiU, it's rendered on a PC. What the WiiU can and cannot do can not be based off of press releases. It looks good, but doesnt exceed any expectations of what should be possible with the WiiU.

More hype than actual content. You really have to be sold on the Zelda franchise already to be sold on this game, like most Nintendo stuff. There are so many better games out there doing the same thing in better ways, they just don't have some guy in a green dress in them.

I've noticed that too. Mario Kart 8 is amazing, this looks like it might actually be the first home Zelda game since Majora to be worth people's time, they actually commissioned a mature-rated title (Bayo2) and they're going so far as to make a GameCube controller adapter for SSB for Wii U.

It's like Nintendo only give a shit about quality when they're not on top anymore.

As a Wii U owner, I'm crazy excited for this. I mostly got the system to play games together with my wife and 7 year old, but games like Zelda will be great for some solo questing. The art style is awesome because it fuses Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword together into one glorious HD thingy. Open world play is killer, and about time for the franchise.

I also think this game will sell a lot of Wii U's which is very needed. Between this and MK8, there's still a chance for the old girl yet.

@druminator: Nothing is confirmed yet. But in A Link Between Worlds, you could go "rent" the weapon you needed for a particular dungeon so you could do them in any order. Not sure if that will be the case here, or if they'll do something different.

@galahadoc: What's your source on that there, brother? PC games do not port over to Wii U and vice versa trivially. Custom GPU, custom graphics API, custom RAM, custom shader format, custom CPU, custom compiler. If Nintendo says it's running on the hardware, i reckon it is, simply by virtue of just how big a pain in the butt it would be to proto for PC and translate later. Sincerely, a dude with a devkit sitting a few inches away from his keyboard.

Edit: One thing I will concede is that it may be an offline render. As in rendering the frames as fast as they can come at a locked time step, and dumping the image to disk every update: Even if it's at 2fps it'd still make a great 60fps video. But Nintendo doesn't have a long history of bullshots. Hell, their first HD zelda demo was demonstrably realtime and looked stunning.

Anyway, A Link Between Worlds was the best game by far since The Wind Waker, hopefully they learned a lot from that and similar contemporary games (Skyrim, Dark Souls 1/2, Witcher, etc.)

Every open-world game must now include mountains, specifically for demo purposes.

@sunjammer: Well I stand corrected then. The assumption was based on that compiling trailers and the like is going to be done by PC and therefore it is going to mean easier development if everything is captured on the PC.

I don't think anyone ever really says what hardware their videos are running on, so I certainly wasn't implying that they were bullshitting anyone, just saying that they were most likely rendering it from a PC and that it doesnt really matter either way.

I am all over this. Wii U here I come.

@benmo316: yeah, in fact, i believe what this link is wearing is exactly the same outfit as the wind waker link.

I remember when you pass the game once you get a hero's attire that "only good people" can see and thus spend the game on those blue clothes.

@gerhabio: Interesting. I did get Wind Waker as my free game with Mario Kart 8 so I'll have to look for that after I beat it.

I could not be more excited for a Zelda game done with a Skyrim worldview.
