"Well, we have no idea what to do, and while you people keep buying vaguely tweaked retreads every year, we knew it couldn't go on like this forever. So, here, you guys can make the retreads now."

it kills me inside that they say "make your own mario courses" yes courses, they aren't called levels anymore

shameful

You should actually play some Mario games, they've been called courses for a long time.

man... all the jaded negatively in these comments makes me sad. i'm 30, have played video games for more than 20 years, and this idea sounds great to me. what we saw is a trailer based on a version of the game almost a year before the final version will be released. people complaining about the inherant limits need to chill and wait to see what the final product looks like. you might not be able to setup your own overworld map (that would be incredible), but there are some really creative people out there that will make some great levels. i for one will absolutely make some attempts of my own.

I was really hoping for something that let you combine elements from Mario 1-3 and World. This seems kind of uninteresting and underwhelming- there is so much more they can do. I want to be Tanooki Mario and throw a turnip at a chargin' chuck while avoiding a poison mushroom.

Well, at least that homage to Mario Paint was good.

I'm seriously confused over any hype this is getting? It's like watching people bust an infinite number of nuts over Mario Paint.

At a minimum, Nintendo should make a downloadable 3DS companion game called "Mario Player" that can play (duh!) Mario Maker levels. The more that Nintendo can do to integrate their handheld platform into the WiiU the better.

Come on now, guys. I mean, it looks great, but "game of the show?" Maybe if they would have dived deeper in, but the little they showed wasn't that great.

All I know is, they better have a palette/physics swap to Super Mario World as well. I don't care for the original look, nor the new one either.

@video_game_king My guess would be that its a mainstream one. ROM hacks are cool and all, but only a small amount of people actually use them. With this title, it will be (hopefully) a popular title with lots of people making cool stuff for it.

Cool idea, but those "updated" graphics look worse then the original. And why is there a grid on the background and tile embossing?!?

I'm still confused why people are so excited over what is essentially a ROM hacking tool.

Haha, yeah. Remember LittleBigPlanet? Remember just how FEW great levels that game resulted in?

The LBP controls were awful, floaty, and not very fun to play. Designing a 'good level' for that game was impossible.

When I was a kid in the 80s, for some reason I loved to draw Mario levels (also Zelda and Metroid) on graph paper. It is a pretty safe bet I will be buying this day one.

LBP was alright, though it DID kinda live off the fact people were blatantly ripping off other games. Not so much because of a rash of clever level design. Which I think I played maybe... 2?... of.

I still haven't played most of the original levels in Super Mario Brothers 1.

1-1, 1-2, hit the warp pipe, either go after the infinite 1-ups or hit the warp in world 4 to the the last world and then kill Bowser.

Done and done.

I sincerely don't understand what's so great about this.

I gotta join in on the chorus, really. Nothing about this seems like it'd be appealing to anyone. Romhackers already have some damned good Mario editing tools, and most people are content to just play the games. I don't see why we need a Mario Paint-type program that lets us slap together levels.

Same here, but I also have zero love or nostalgia for anything Mario. I'm sure people will create amazing things with this, just not for me. I also predict that Gerstmann will spend way less time with this than he things he will.

This tickles me in a way a Nintendo game hasn't in a long while. Now give me Zelda and Metroid editing tools!

Edit: I just realized that this is only super awesome if we can share our creations with others in a seamless manner. Excitement back down to cautiously optimistic...

This looks amazing! I'm not too much of a tinkerer, but I would be buying this to play all of the crazy custom levels the community will be making for this!

If this game doesn't have a sort of community sharing ability..then I'm not actually interested.. but still very impressed!

@jacksukeru: Consider that in every game in which you can create your own levels, there are twenty billion versions of 1-1. Mario Maker will complete the cycle, in which the first level from every other game will be made in the style of SMB.
