Eldritch Comes From Yet Another Set of Ex-AAA Devs

Having seen the quicklook, I've come back to this trailer and wonder what evil other-dimensional being possessed them to make such a TERRIBLE trailer for a pretty good game. The game doesn't have hipster-polka music.

This game does not trailer well, but it plays well.

That...looks...terrible.

It's like it's Minecraft got turned into a first-person shooter.

The bent textures are specifically evoking the PlayStation 1 to me, almost all polygonal PS1 games had that issue due to the lack of a z-buffer. There are certainly other things that look more Minecrafty in there too, but I wouldn't call it a straight up Minecraft clone either.

I do get a vibe of cynicism from the entire thing though, throwing everything that's been notable in video game pop culture for the past 3 years and hoping that'll make this game sell. The PS1 texture glitches and the music are the only things that make me think it could actually be a genuine love letter to 90's games.

The game looks really cool, but the trailer music they used here is so dumb. I hope it's just a stupid joke and not indicative of the game's actual tone, because it'd be a really awful missed opportunity.

Nothing says HP Lovecraft and unimangiable horror like ska music.

It seems Minecraft has caused "Hideous" to count as an art style now, what a shame.

ITT: people who have no idea how a video game is made and how much work goes into it.

It just seems like developers are jumping in on it because it's win-win for them. Easier and quicker to create content and they don't have to bother making highres textures and it's popular right now.

Lets stop calling this an art style altogether. Why are these people under the impression that anyone actually liked the (vanilla) look of Minecraft? I can barely stand it myself and I generally like playing Minecraft.

No offense but I am real tired of this look. It's just looking uglier and uglier with every clone.

As a huge fan of H.P Lovecraft, this is about as far from his literary themes as you could possibly get. This just looks awful.

The idea of a Lovecraft roguelike sounds amazing! Just so fucking sick of the Minecraft 'homage'.

Oh yeah - because whenever I think of the unfathomable horrors of the H.P Lovecraft universe, I also immediately think some sort of hipster-jazz-polka music would go so well with it. I can just see it now - Cthulhu doing the cossack dance with a bottle of vodka in his hand while a thousand unnamed horrors plays the accordion.

Give me more H.P. Lovecraft, take out the rest, I don't like Minecraft its boring.

On a vaguely related note, I don't think you could get any farther from Lovecraft than the goofy aesthetic of Minecraft. And that music doesn't help at all, good lord.

I would like this better if it didn't look like freaking Minecraft. That's a massive turn off.

This looks great; I just can't stand roguelikes.

Sorry dude, not gonna happen. Here's why. Doom clones referred to cloning the gameplay, not the graphics. If you steal both the gameplay and the exact graphic style (and dont bullshit me about "3d pixel art," dude. Minecraft has so many graphics packs that change the way the blocks look and this guy decides to go with the exact flat shaded style as the base game), then you're making a minecraft clone.

If you ignore the green overlay, even the color palette is the same! When you look back at the 16 bit era, nintendo had different art than square who had different art than capcom, even though they were all "pixel art"

Walking around with your arms like that looks mighty uncomfortable.

Imagine taking a time machine back to, say, 1993 and having this conversation with someone who plays video games:

1993 Person: Wow, what are video games like 20 years in the future?

You: Well. the good news is that there is an entire genre of games, one of which is incredibly popular, that feature fully destructible, modifiable 3D environments.

1993 Person: That's amazing! What's the bad news?

You: Well, the polygonal graphics look worse than Doom levels on a 486.

1993 Person: NOOOOOOooooooo....

Sooooo....this is just a joke right? Nobody could be cynically throwing all those dumb things together like everybody else and REALLY mean it, right?

Just like everything post doom for a period was called a doom-clone before they were just accepted as first person shooters - I look forward to the day where 'lazy' commentors dont reduce everything with 3d pixel art to a 'minecraft clone'. :)

I like exactly one mechanic that's proposed here and that's the idea of a roguelike FPS.

technically patrick called it a minecraft look, to me this is reminding me a lot of 90s dos games due to these enemies, bent textures, traps, etc

Not a fan of the look, but if the soundtrack is anything like that I will definitely be checking out the SoundCloud page.

@larrydavis: The dude is a programmer, give him a break, there are certain art styles that are probably within his scope and this is what he chose, "lazy" has nothing to do with it.
