oh my god.

Yep, this is an endurance run all right.

Some tips to be helpful.

They recorded this well in advance, I doubt your tips will be of much use.

This will be interesting to say the least. It's too early to pass judgement on the ER overall but I know regardless of quality compared to those of past ERs I'm gonna watch the whole thing. Never finished Chrono Trigger either. I remember getting to a point where I could freely travel through all the times and never finding the story trigger I needed and eventually giving up.

What do the hands of time, Pac Man, and the Endurance Run have in common?

7. At least consider playing on Wait mode instead of Active. It plays almost exactly the same. The only difference is that the enemy won't pelt you quite as often. It makes things a tiny bit easier. This would work well considering how you are playing the game. You can change it in the options part of the menu screen.

To be more specific, player/enemy battle gauges are paused while you're selecting items and abilities. I think enemies also stop moving while you're in these menus, so it makes it easier to catch them in a good position for your slashes and cyclones and such.

Man, all those people that were complaining saying this ER would be terrible. If they don't think 20m of backtracking and killing the same mobs over and over again (interlaced with constant sighing) caused by skipping dialog isn't fun then they have no soul.

@redbliss: Yes, didn't one of their comments imply that at some point? Anyway, if they were holding off on releasing these videos, maybe the point was that they weren't sure it would work out. Which means if they're going up now, that must mean that it's been working out :) A bit of a few mental leaps involved in that, but I'm loving this ER so far, frustrations with this episode aside.

Posted by mithical

I can't really fault them for not seeing that screen transition in the canyon. I never really noticed that it is actually one of Chrono Trigger's few weaknesses. In case Ryan or Patrick ever read the comments:

  • Look around town in 1000 AD for the mayor's house. The NPCs there will teach you tons of useful stuff.
  • Tech points go towards learning your next tech, experience goes towards earning your next level (stat/health/mp increases).
  • The 'Wait' battle system only means that 'time' does not pass while you are in a menu (choosing a tech or an item). If you sit on the main menu (Att./Tech/Item), enemies will keep attacking you.

I am enjoying this, though I have a request. Please leave dialogue on a little longer, maybe read out loud a bit more. It'll help us both. I want to enjoy the story along with you, Ryan.

Back to the forest, Brono.

Posted by Phantomvirus

I wonder how many people goggled henchman after this episode.

Posted by DarthB

Brono's before Hono's?

Posted by dagas

At least they managed the find their way at the end. It was so frustrating watching them go there twice and not finding the exit even though they were right there.

Nothing better than riding the train home from a hard day, and watching the daily endurance run on the phone.

Brog is such a pimp.

Posted by DexterKid

Yeh, I don't see myself getting hooked on this in the way I did with the last two ERs. I will still watch these (by watch I mean have it play in the background while I do other stuff) cause I don't have anything better to do with my time; but sadly this is not the endurance run I was hoping for.

YOU DONT HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE FOREST ITS LITERALLY A STEP TO THE LEFT AHHH

I mean... have fun you guys...

@Onizuka36: yes please.

Edited by kerikxi

Yeah, at some point, they're going to remember they're playing a SNES RPG. Probably the first boss that pounds them into the ground. Pay attention to dialogue and always fully equip your guys to the best you can afford. If you can't afford to gear up, it might be a good time to just grind a bit.

The canyon is well hidden though. I remember getting stuck in this exact spot as a kid.

Skipping through dialogue and missing where to go. IT'S NOT JUST FOR QUICK LOOKS!

Posted by Driam

Man, as charismatic and fun to listen to as he may be, Ryan's fatal flaw of never paying attention when he plays games (or rather, plays games in a quick look format) seems like it might really drag this ER out in an unfortunate way whenever they button through a crucial piece of dialog that can't be repeated.

Can't wait 'til they get to Bobo, though.

Posted by Scodiac

I think the Queen probably has a little Brog on the side now and then.

Posted by KestrelPi

@Driam: If they go for the current naming conventions...

it would be Bobo, but I wouldn't blame them if they decide to swing for Brobo

Posted by mithical

They read every piece of dialogue except for Lucca's second text window where she says "She may still be here!"

Im actualy really enjoying this ER so far.

The top of the screen is juttering left and right like one or two pixels.

Ok, the game is incredible and the endurance run is fine but it's really starting to grate on me how Ryan and Patrick both use the same stupid little sounds they've gotten in the habit of making. The short "whoah" and "oh" is said way WAY too much. I noticed about a month ago one of them making that sound and knew that all the others would pick it up and start using it. And alas, here it is in all it's glory.

We had a lecturer who did a fun excercise with us once. She got us to record ten minutes of conversation, in pairs. We then went through the conversations and picked out all the little vocal ticks that we have but never notice. I said "Eh" 18 times in 10 minutes, and I was by far one of the least offenders.

If you start noticing that shit, you will never be able to stop noticing.

I can't listen to this music without hearing The Demon Rush, oh god :(

and JRPGs with random battles or these "walk within 50ft to battle" fights need an "auto combat on superlow enemies" option that just cuts through them and gives you the rewards, as puny as they might be of single exp points.

I'm confused as to how much of the game Patrick has played before. He tries to act surprised or unsure of what's going on, but he's quick to tell Ryan when something is a consumable or what a status effect does. I'd rather an endurance run with two people who don't have prior knowledge of the game beyond basic stuff.

Posted by Toug

I just realized that I always read "Hide Cap" as "Cap of Hiding" in my head all this time as well.

You don't have to know anything about this game to know what the consumables and status effects do.

Earthbound did this really well. If an enemy was low-level enough, you didn't even leave the overworld.

How about Patrick's foreshadowing of a future boss in Part 2?

This ER is pretty boring. Needs the VJ team.

I've been thinking about that, and man, I hope they swing for that second name. That would be perfect. The other one sounds too much like a monkey... and I guess that would be alright. The other one is too perfect though.

I couldn't wait until Lunch. I just had Endurance Run for breakfast.

Posted by Zaxex

Really enjoying the new ER so far. I was slightly cynical after waiting so long since the last two, but I've found myself watching each episode multiple times and checking to see when each episode is released. Today's was an hour earlier than the last two days for instance.

Getting to watch a great game I missed played from start to finish, with amazing music and the equivalent of dozens of hours of a two man GB podcast is pretty cool.

Posted by KestrelPi

@Zaxex: I don't think it was. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to watch it during my lunchbreak.

And yet he had no clue where they had to go for the story to progress in this episode.

I wonder when they'll hit that point of "oh, we need to level, and really look at equipment at stores". Jeff and vinny eventually hit it when they had multiple grinding episodes in p4. CT is fairly easy and low on grinding required, but of course I think that way when I'm probably past double digit finishes on the game; low compared to some. It'll let you breeze for awhile but I'm sure it's coming.

And as a follow up thought to the need to get stronger...this ER needs vinny to walk by every now and then just to say "save it", because they're freaking me out.

Posted by Funglip

Guys, when you're unsure of where to go next, stop and think for a bit and then proceed.

I only finished CT a couple of times but I don't think there's ever a point where you need to grind as long as you keep up with your equipment. What kinda bothers me are all those chests they opened already. Or is that only a problem with sealed chests (trying to be vague as to not spoil anything)?

Posted by igloochan

@SparkleMotion: Clearly he hasn't play that much, considering how much they ran around before they realized there was another area in the canyon. Also when they left the castle before finding Barle.

Posted by thevigilanteoflove

I think the lack of voice acting in the game is really bothering me. It would really give them something to talk about, mock, and laugh at. I think that's what has made the last two that enjoyable. And Vinny.

Posted by igloochan

Can't wait until they get to the courtroom scene and see how much much their actions in the fair have doomed them.
