Deep Silver is really milking this Dead Island "franchise"

Posted by cyberfunk

Maaaan those animations look ROUGH.

Edited by BeachThunder

What's the record for the most games in a non-Nintendo franchise released in a single year?

Posted by wrecks

What?

Posted by FuriousJodo

When that game that had a commercial that people liked and then had some people sort of like it after it was released, we knew we had a hit franchise.

Posted by kidman

I honestly thought that's an iOS game.. ungh.

Man, they're really leaning into Dead Island aren't they?

They sure are! Surprisingly all three of these new Dead Island games look like they could all be winners, and without (good) Techland's help. Dead Island: Epidemic is a whole lot of fun, and got me interested in MOBA style games again. Fatshark AB is developing this one, and in my book, they have made some really great games. They made Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West and Bionic Commando Rearmed 2. Both really fun games.

At least Deep Silver seems to be milking the franchise in the proper ways by making each game totally different from one-another and getting some decent developers behind them. I do kind of wish Techland was making Dead Island 2 though. The original (not Riptide) was a fantastic game IMO.

They can lean into this all they like, just leave Saint's Row out of the milking machine.

Posted by Sparky_Buzzsaw

Wow. Huh. Even I'm worried this might be too much Dead Island, but who knows? Maybe it'll be great?

I don't want to know, I really don't care! Dead Island Riptide was more Dead Island than I needed, so three new games all at once... hoo boy. This series isn't Persona! Some of the art in here was kind of neat, but I think my favourite parts were just a result of trailer effects.

Somebody at Deep Silver has surely already pitched the idea for a crossover game at some point.

Is this a mod for No More Heroes?

Posted by EuanDewar

Its super strange that Deep Silver are taking all these fairly stylistically disparate games and lumping them under the Dead Island franchise, of all things.

I don't think I would call it 'milking' the franchise because as far as I can tell Dead Island 2 is the one game of the lot that might actually be like the previous two games.

I loved Dead Island, liked Riptide, looking forward to DI2, but... duders... relax a bit, yeah? We don't need this many. Chiiiiilllll on the Dead Island, wouldja? Just a bit?

Holeey shit, that is one video game-assed looking video game protagonist. Popped collar+ hoodie combo, messenger bag, jean capris, nice big comforting shoulders to reaffirm our masculinity. Congrats all around to the design team. Well done indeed.

is this the sequel to Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z?

Posted by FeverChill

I'm waiting for Dance Dance Dead Island...

Posted by emtee

Why would anyone not want to escape Dead Island?

How much longer until "Live Comfortably On Dead Island" is a thing?

Posted by Elwoodan

Deep Silver just like their zombie games, even Hellraid is mostly about undead-slaying.

Seriously. I'm Whitebro McFacescruff and I'm here to fight zombies. Yawn.

This is actually a viral marketing campaign for Saints Row V.

Oh hey Travis Touchdown is back

suddenly getting turned off by MOBAs in general and then they make this...thing. Even The Witcher is getting weird stuff like this.

This looks bad.

They should have named their game something other than Dead Island if they wanted to make more games in the series. Now every game pretty much needs to have a tropical setting. It should just be called the "Dead" series so we can get stuff like Dead City. Dead Villiage. Dead Redemption. Dead Vengeance. Dead Revengeance. Dead Rising. Wait...

Acting!

it's telling that the best part of the trailer was the shot (0:53) showing the carpet of his room - it's the carpet from The Shining.

A stealth-based zombie game may just be the most unappealing videogame I've ever heard of, a perfect combination of two of the biggest things I dislike in gaming. That being said, the real Dead Island wasn't bad, especially if you could get some friends involved.

Deadborderislands....

That movement where he gets up from the bed looked really PS2 era.

Posted by SomeDeliCook

This isn't milking, this is just making a bunch of games and giving them all the same brand. They are all going to be completely different games made by completely different studios, not like Call of Duty or Battlefield. Those are milked franchises

Edited by thebunnyhunter

I thought this was gonna be a more Survival game when i first heard the name, like a Rust or the Forest, where you try to survive until you can somehow find/create a way off the island.

Also add in some rouge-lilke-like- like elements in there too

This might be cool. Insanity from stress is certainly a different take on the countless heroes who stay calm and collected during zombie outbreaks, etc.

Posted by BigSocrates

A) I don't care about Dead Island. I don't care about the Dead Island fiction. Who does? Why make so many games based on such a thin premise?

B) This game looks bad.

C) The art for this game looks okay in general but like a bad fit for a zombie game. Zombies should be visceral and gross, not cartoonish. When they are cartoonish they lose any scariness they have and any gross out factor and just become slow, stupid, enemies.

Who is this game even for? If you want to make a more story based adventurish zombie game fine, that's cool, but why tie it to the dumbness of Dead Island? This looks like a terrible mash up of Dead Rising and Walking Dead, without any of what makes either franchise cool.

But does it have trucks?

Posted by Bholla71085

I generally liked the first game, I spent hours with my buddies playing even if it was a bit repetitive. I hate that this will inevitably sully the "Dead Island" name that much more.

Posted by ThatOneDudeNick

Eh. Dead Island is fun enough to mess around with. The story I couldn't care less about though. This looks kind of whack. Looking forward to Dead Island 2 proper, however

TAKE SOME XANAX OR SOMETHING AND CHILL FOR A SECOND, GUY, JESUS.

Edited by AdequatelyPrepared

Either I'm seriously underestimating how much people cared for the story of the original Dead Island, or Deep Silver is seriously overestimating how much people cared for Dead Island at all.

Posted by HatKing

Graphics aside, this looks more interesting than another zombie action game to me. Dealing with whatever a zombie epidemic would be would certainly drive the strongest to the edge, imagine what it'd do to the unstable. I think exploring the psychological aspects of this horror trope could be really cool, if it's handled right. This seems like a small enough project to take risks on, so I'm hopeful.

Hey! Another game for last gen! GO FUCK YOURSELVES!

Hey! Another game for last gen! GO FUCK YOURSELVES!

Unless your joke is flying over my head, why are "last gen" games bad? This has been, is, will be a constant forever. Not everyone, not most developers, can spend resources on a tiny new console market.

Edited by sl1ppyfist

@ch3burashka: I'm speaking as a gamer that traded last gen consoles for next gen and am getting screwed by having games I'd like to play come out on inferior hardware. I understand we're in a transitional period right now, but I guess I'm feeling a little buyers remorse seeing awesome games come out on older systems and not being able to play them. It's not a joke, and it won't be a constant forever.

Posted by CrimsonNoir

The psychological aspect looks interesting, but why put it in the Dead Island franchise.

Edited by Waffley

So we have Dead Island 2 (A goofy sequel that is pushing for the Dead Rising crowd way too hard), Escape Dead Island (Completely unnecessary to put it in the DI world, also seems like they're trying to go after Telltale's recent style or something), and Dead Island Epidemic which I don't even know where to begin with.

Just invest a few more million bucks into this franchise, Deep Silver. There's absolutely no way it can go wrong and end up leading to your own uDraw scenario.
