The art in that swings from pretty cool to disappointing.

The animation looks kind of awkward. The art is good though.

I'm not gonna knock it existing, but I feel like this makes me wish they'd done something other than remake Shadowgate. I think the music and atmosphere of Shadowgate are awesome, the only trouble is it didn't really play that well even back in the day. It's not dissimilar to how I felt about Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded, but maybe even stronger. At least we will get that music revamped.

Wow, holy shit. What a blast from the past...
Loved Shadowgate, many wasted hours with that game as a tiny child. Consider me cautiously excited!

So what happened to the house? Wasn't there a house in the beginning and you were looking for your little sister or something? I guess this is a re-imagining and not a re-make?

Huh. Didn't expect to see the Mac version at the beginning there. That was the version I had as a kid. Not really sure what to think about this; when I finished that version, I felt comfortable in saying I was done with Shadowgate.

Rosy nostalgia aside, Shadowgate was a horribly obtuse game which lead to hundreds of frustrating deaths because early video-game writers thought it was clever to not give you ANY hint that any particular action was either necessary or suicidal. "Use" a torch at the wraith? Why the heck would I do that, when there's no hint that the wraith is weak to fire, torches, or throwing things at it, AND the fact that torches are the most necessary thing in the game, AND are in limited supply. Also, let's hide an object in the very first screen of the game without giving you ANY indication it's there or hint that you NEED it to finish the game. Garrrgh.

Hopefully THIS version of Shadowgate leaves all that antiquated philosophy back in the dust of the 80s, where it belongs. :b

I will keep my girlish screams of excitement contained for now; the nostalgia alone gives the biggest urge for me to fumble around my loft in search of the NES version of the original game.

Those animations made me physically ill then I had a spastic fit and knocked myself out on the floor. I'm writing this from the hospital. Thanks shadow gate.

Unfortunately it seems to be a straight port with updated graphics so I imagine all the bad design remains. The list of Verbs at the top sure as hell suggests it is as stuck in the past as it possibly can...

Kickstarter might need to start a spin off company just to keep up with the games industry.

We can call it Nostalgiastarter, where new and innovated get kicked to the curb.

@antivanti: You should go to the website and read the info on the game. Most of the puzzles have been redone and the ones that were lame have been removed. It's not a port.

I liked Shadowgate on the NES, but I can't say how I feel about a modern version, especially one that doesn't seem to be doing anything new with the gameplay.

First one was interesting in that it was a game that would be solved within an hour of release thanks to the internet, but back in 1990 I pretty much had to rely on trial and error, exchanging info with friends at school, and magazines. Heck, Shadowgate was the one and only time my parents let me call the Nintendo game counselor line, after being stuck on the hellhound room for a week (and on the day I called, the new Nintendo Power came later in the day that had the solution in it).

Unless they change the way the game fun fundamentally plays, at which point it isn't Shadowgate anymore, I don't see this game having much of a shelf life. It's not really something you go back to after you beat it.

@antivanti, @kanerobot: To be fair, it looks like they added some new "rooms" -- the trailer revealed an icy room wit what looked like a giant spider frozen on the ceiling -- so hopefully they're mixing it up.

But ya, there was only one way to "beat" the original game , and once you had the strategy guide in hand it took you anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and then you were done.

This seems like a really odd choice of a game to remake. I have fond memories of the old Nintendo game, and its classic music, but I dont want to play the same thing.
