Vice City came out, like, 9 years ago. I don't know what Pac Man CE has to do with the 80s, nor Geometry Wars, for that matter. Neon doesn't = 80s.

I think you and I have different definitions of the term "played out".

That argument is a little bit weird. It's not like Vice City/Vice City Stories went away or anything. They didn't die of old age.

Anyway, yeah, I don't think we have different definitions of played out, but I think maybe we have different thresholds for this joke in particular. I happen to think it barely carries this trailer, let alone a full game, so that's about how far something can rely on the gag to keep me interested.

@pudge said:

You live a sad and depressing life.

Everything was better in the 80s. Politicians knew how to hide their shitty behavior, movies and TV shows were concerned only with pure entertainment with a side helping of selling action figures, there were arcade machines in every free standing building, the streets were PAVED in neon gold and music on the radio was sung by men in their 30s and 40s backed up by a drum machine.

EVERYTHING.

No, see, we were kids. That's what changed. We didn't watch the movies concerned with warning people about the creepy, self-destructive Reagan-Thatcher era (but there were plenty of those), so we thought it was all about shooting bad guys. For that matter, we didn't realize how creepy most of those movies are, in context (even Robert Zemeckis acknowledges that the ending to Back to the Future is kinda fucked up), those arcade machines were created to nickel and dime (or rather "quarter", but that's not a thing) children out of their pocket change and the music has become a running joke for a reason.

But I wasn't aware of this back then. I want you to understand this, I was roused from bed one day by a friend who had run to my house just to prove to me that he had learned to play the opening to "The Final Countdown" on a Casio keyboard. I watched the PILOT to Macgyver when it first aired and I wanted to be Michael Knight when I grew up. My lack of fondness for the "The 80s were silly, yo!" gag is not snobbery, it's deep regret and secret shame.

You don't even wanna know what my hair looked like.

So Vinny was right. We are in the Animus. I mean the Abstergo logo is all over in that Lost Expeditions mission about those crazy scientists. So this is the 80's package for 250 space creds. Sounds good to me. Hopefully there is a suppressor for one of the guns or a space crossbow. I liked being stealthy in Far Cry but if not this looks totally fine just running around all guns...sorry lasers blazing!

I thought the whole retro-80s-neon aesthetic was getting kinda played out recently, but this game seems to approach it with such insane gusto/cyber animals that I can't help but get on board.

Also they should have a special edition with deliberately poorly made action figures.

@noelveiga: You were a kid. Sadly, I was born in October of 1989. And maybe that invalidates my opinion, but I believe strongly that my life would have been vastly improved if I would have grown up even 10 years sooner. I listen to 80s pop and metal on a regular rotation, my favorite albums of all time are Operation Mindcrime and Heaven and Hell, so it's no "running joke" for me. Hell, give me a Tiffany song any day over the Hanson/Backstreet Boys/N'Sync bullshit I grew up with.

As for movies, Robert Zemekis went insane at some point in his life and started making creepy CGI puppet shows, so I apologize if I don't trust his opinion. All I know is I'm staring at a Back to the Future poster on my wall and remember how much joy that brought me as a child when my mom first showed it to me. Then I sought out masterpieces like Ghostbusters, Commando, Rambo and Rocky, Escape From New York, Predator, they were amazing. Overthinking entertainment is what brought us "meta"humor and referential meme bullshit, give me Airplane and Naked Gun instead.

I remember the arcade that stuck around for the first ten years of my life in my local shopping mall, and I gladly gave them every cent I had and would gladly continue to if they still existed. Hell, there is a bowling alley with a huge arcade about 20 minutes from where I live, and I love going there and playing pinball. The atmosphere of arcades, a place for gamers to hang out in their own little world, it is a HUGE tragedy that these places no longer exist. So give me arcade games over free to play microtransactions any day!

The fact that you were lucky enough to experience all these things first hand and feel regret about it saddens me deeply. I got to experience Grunge music and Disney Channel. I get to have nostalgia about unwatchable bullshit like Keenan and Kel. Rugrats. Saved by the Bell. Full House. UGH. You got GOOD Transformers, you had crazy toys with mechanical lips and a boom of insane action figures, you had the Muppet Movies. Hell, you even got Return of the Jedi! I could go on forever, but this is already way too much rambling.

Long live the 1980s. May they never die.

@pudge Holy shit, you just made me feel SO fucking old right now. You've weaponized nostalgia into a making me feel old gun. See, you're remembering so selectively. I don't get that luxury, I was there, so you remember the bits that were left over for posterity. I remember the whole shitty thing.

80s pop and metal is not all we got. We had the New Kids on the Block. Who got so popular they had their own cartoon. And it was all crap. And for every Jackson 5 there was a kids group that fucking WISHES they were Hannah Montana. It's just that nobody remembers them.

Overthinking entertainment is what brought us "meta"humor and referential meme bullshit, give me Airplane and Naked Gun instead.

I love Back to the Future and all those movies, but Back to the Future ends with Marty ERASING HIS FUCKING PARENTS FROM HISTORY, at least as he knows them, and it's all fine BECAUSE HE GOT A FOUR BY FOUR. Seriously, it's so Reagan it's fucked up.

Oh, and as for referential humour? Hate to break it to you, but Airplane is a parody of a serious movie called Zero Hour and an entire sub-genre of catastrophe movies with airplanes in distress. Naked Gun is a remake of a TV show which in turn was a parody of police procedurals of the time. All those original comedies you like? They are the memes of the 80s, referencing things that sucked so hard you don't remember them, just the viral gags they spawned. Indiana Jones and Star Wars? Riffs on TV shows from when Lucas was a kid. The Internet didn't invent referential media, for better or for worse.

I hung out at arcades. I was twelve. They smelled of weed and I got beaten up and had my quarters stolen routinely. I also could not complain because my parents had banned me from going to arcades, so there's nothing I could do if I wanted access to Double Dragon. Which I would have bypassed entirely if I could play Double Dragon anywhere else, but I couldn't. Because, adjusted for inflation, a NES was like a seven hundred bucks (and each game about a hundred).

Do I miss those places? Dearly. Had you shown me what my 3DS can do my testicles would have exploded, though.

I could go on forever, but this is already way too much rambling.

...

But you have all those things. They never went away. The 80s weren't a total wash, but the remainder of them in popular culture is much, much, MUCH better than the average of what we were exposed to. Like every decade, really. The "good" transformers and all that stuff is cool in retrospect, but keep in mind that's ALL we had. Most animation at the time looked inferior to what a first year student cooks up in Flash for a Youtube video. It's charming in retrospect, but try to spend your whole childhood convincing yourself that He-Man is unironically awesome and failing miserably and you'll see why so many of us kept being into cartoons once the 90s brought about cool shit like Batman TAS or artsy, conceptual stoner stuff along the lines of Ren & Stimpy.

For the record, being a kid in the 80s also means that I was in my fucking prime when Saved by the Bell was a thing. Pastels looked as normal to me in the 90s as perms had in the 80s. It didn't dodge that bullet at all.

But I understand this weird passion for Blood Dragon a bit better now, so thank you for that. You are the kind of guy I met back in the 80s that insisted that all cool music had died in the 70s, which in turn is the same kind of kid that grew up to be Quentin Tarantino and argue that anything post-Spielberg is saccharine shit and 70s grindhouse is where it's at. Not to make you feel less special or anything, but your nostalgia is not original. You fill a niche. I've met people equally charmed by the 90s, too.

So there you have it, this game isn't as much for 80s kids but for 90s kids that wish they had been 80s kids. And, I guess, for people like Jeff who were 80s kids but just happen to think silly nonsense is what videogames are about.

@noelveiga: I am sorry for weaponizing nostalgia, but I've found that if people like me don't support stuff like this with a great fervor it tends to die out rather quickly (Dredd, we hardly new thee...) But yea, you hit the nail on the head, and I know I'm being selective. I've met guys like me too, I mean, this whole game was created by people obviously in my mindset. I am the kind of guy who would tell you with a straight face that He-Man is uinronically amazing though, but I'm also the kind of guy who has watched The Room and Birdemic 50 times each. I have a very high tolerance for stupidity in my entertainment, I kind of have to in order to enjoy the stuff I do. Saved By The Bell is pretty bad though, you're right about that.

I would argue that the stuff I mentioned in the movie section was made with more craft than stuff is today. I don't mind references to things, but compare Airplane and Naked Gun, which is funny no matter if you know what they're referencing or not, to something like the recent "spoofs" like Scary Movie, where the only joke is "REMEMBER THIS?". That was all I meant about that.

Everything about that trailer make me miss 80's toys, Saturday morning cartoons and VCRs, well pretty much the 1980s in general.

They need to make a cartoon and toy line out of this.

Looks like a brilliant mix to Far Cry 3 by injecting it with Saints Row 3, Heavy Metal Magazine, Jolt cola & maybe some vodka. Can't wait & hope they do more with this idea as it's wicked cool.
