Final Fantasy VII Is Coming (Back) to the PC

@Stimpack: Eh? Cloud saves? Eh? Eh?

Does the PC version allow you to use just the mouse to click through menus and stuff? If so, it might be decent to play on a Surface Pro tablet. Maybe updating the PC version is about the mobile/tablet port team familiarizing themselves with the source code to pave the way for an iOS port. Surely porting the PC version over to the iPad is a better idea than emulating the Playstation version, if they were indeed planning on bringing FF7 out on that device, right?

LULZ this is horrible almost as bad as final fantasy 7 it's self. the trailer the announcment, the programming, the bad final fantasy game everything.

Oh and for some fucking reason square is listing the god damn game with specs that would run fucking crysis in high or meduim detail even though the crap PC version of the game from 1998 could run on my fucking pentuim 2 with a voodoo 2 GPU back in god damn 1998. And that damn PC had tons more power than the damn ps1.

This is 1000% proof that Fucking recommend system specs on games are 100% crap and they are all listed as too damn high

This will be the worst programming job since big rigs trucking if you need that much fucking power to run this crap game your programmers are on weed and didnt do jack or you highered numb nuts that need to go back to programming school.

What the fuck could it be running the windows OS? You can run this game at fucking beyond HD resolution at 2560 x 1600 on a fucking radon 9700 pro or geforce and a pentuim 4 and still have tons of fucking cpu and GPu cycles left over to run a fucking simulation of robot cats and 12 nes games.

As someone who only got around to playing FF7 a decade after the fact, I have to say: the convoluted nature of that story does not hold up so well when you're no longer in awe of the fact that CGI exists.

Also, Retronauts once did an entire episode arguing about FF7 and it was awesome. Go listen to that.

Depends on the price I guess. I won't be picking it up unless they made some neat changes. I was playing a few months ago with ePSXe because I didn't want to hookup my PSX or PS2. Plus ePSXe allowed the resolution to scale nicely. Textures still looked the same of course, but the characters, enemies, and UI looked crisper than what a AV or S-Video cable would give me.

still my favorite rpg. has crazy value. the summons really felt powerful. (knights of the round anyone?) and the ultimates looked great. who didnt love omnislash? but i wont buy this again without an update to the graphics.

Will this be compatible with those PC mods that replace the normal models with the high res ones from the final battle?

It's not bad compared to any game in the series. People just love to hate what is loved.

Your not wrong but mainly the hatred for this particular entry into the series was because of the influence this game had over most of the FF's (and other RPG's) that came after it... art style, characters etc. that some people just aren't into. So basically its blamed for taking the series into a certain direction that apparently makes it easy to hate.

I for one am a huge fan of this game, though im puzzled as to why now and why on the PC, I will probably get it and most likely be into it.

I just found it doesn't age well at all. When it was all about the pretty graphics, I didn't mind waiting around for the bar to fill. But I think it's quasi-turn based combat is really boring. They made the new final fantasy's a faster pace by adding the class switching, but when you're just queueing up attacks the whole time it's pretty shitty.

The graphics definitely haven't aged well. No doubt about that. But I just replayed FF8 not too long ago (my favorite in the series) and it holds up quite well.

I'm going to respond to everyone at once:

But of course the art style and characters had to change. You couldn't get away with 16 bit character sprites anymore, characters needed to be more than just the same face with different hair and clothes. I personally do not care much for the over accessorizing Nomura tends to deal with, but if you look at the pre- FF 10 Nomura art style characters are not that dumb looking.

If they continued to use the Amano style everyone would be bone white, somber, and wispy with even more beads, belts, and strands going everywhere. Have you ever seen art of his where a character looked pretty stoked? No? Because they don't exist. Smirking Porum doesn't count.

Also I don't really know if FF7 did change the series as much as people claim. All the games are pretty different. FF9 was a call back to the olden days. Aside from Squall being laconic, 8 seemed pretty different and bright compared to 7, there was a sense or realism in terms of the way most characters looked that you never saw before in that series. 10 is out of this world and strange, it seems to have more in common with nabuu in Star Wars episode 1 than FF7, In the same "Vayne" FF12 seems more like Star Wars than the steampunk setting of 7 and aside from Vann, none of the characters look too anime.

I kind of like the super blocky-ness to 7 but yeah, the graphics look pretty ridiculous now, It looks so silly but can you imagine a realistic character hopping around the golden saucer or even the world map? But pre-8 everything stylistically was inconsistent. At least Cid and Tifa would run up to people to attack rather than stepping forward waving a sword around thin air and somehow hurting and enemy. Also enemies actually animate in 7 unlike before when you had giant static and highly detailed sprites. Compare boss Golbez to guest party member Golbez or the walkers Biggs and Wedge drive in 6 to the soldier and walkers you actually fight.

The ATB thing is sort of dated, but that was around years before 7. With the exception of 3 and 5, up until that point no game in the series let you have the level of customization a character could have thanks to the materia system. I'll be honest I haven't played much of 8, but I know the draw system lets you learn spells and change stats like the materia system did. Its just so tedious to have to draw cure, then go to the menu to bind the spell to a stat. Really I could just always be at critical status and just limit break the game. I do plan on playing more of 8 so maybe those feelings will change.

Come on Square, take one for the masses, and release this on Steam! No one is going to care about your achievements for this game otherwise.

The original PC release used straight up MIDI files for music, which sounded somewhere between terrible and almost OK depending on your sound card (at the time I had a wavetable-based card so it wasn't too terrible, but if all you had was some crappy SoundBlaster the FM synth sounds were really bad). I wonder if they'll change that, but as this seems like a really cynical cash-in I kind of doubt it.

From these requirements, I would assume that the 2D pre-rendered backgrounds would (and should) be up-res-ed (hopefully not just upscaled and stretched) requiring more graphical power/memory than the PS1. The CGI cutscenes would be done in full detailed 1080P (think blu-ray release of an old film) 16:9 instead of letterbox. The gameplay graphics would not be changed, though rendered at a higher resolution, the blocky characters will look the same with the same low polygon count, just crisper/smoother because it's rendered at a higher resolution. No new textures for the actual in-game graphics. Just better filtering (AF and AA in PC setting terms). It should be a decent re-release of the same exact game. No real remake yet though. If you have emulated this on PC at a higher resolution, this official re-release will probably have similar results.

So in terms of graphics, not really much of a difference if people just emulated it.

I don't think there's going to be much added without them just saying screw it, we're going to fully remake FF7 from the ground up.

It's popular and many people put it on a pedestal above the other entries in the series, when in all reality it doesn't much deserve it.

So, yeah. It's popular to the point of being overrated, so a certain group of people are bound to hate it and claim that FF6 is better. I wouldn't be surprised if FF6 eventually got the same reputation and the same problem of having a large number of haters.

I do, by the way, think that FF6 is better but I hardly hate 7. I like 7. I just don't think it's as good as 6, but *eh* opinions.

Anyway, as far as this video goes, I'd guess that this was vintage '90's if I didn't know any better. They did a really good job of highlighting the pointlessness of it all because, hey, if you've got a computer that can run this then you've probably got one that can run a PS1 emulator. Or maybe you could go and buy the PS1 version off of PSN and play it on a PS3 or a (now very cheap) PSP.

I'm more wondering the purpose of re-releasing this on PC a second time. Some sort of collection would be something that would interest me more, and I love FF7.

I had the PC version when it first came out and ended up shelving it and just emulated the PS1 version. There was some weird stuff with the music and some of the (shitty) translation was changed for what seemed like odd reasons. Hopefully this version will have a translation that makes sense and not just be a repackaging of the original PC version.

Love the game but this seems pointless. I wonder if square is going to try and throw a $39+ price tag on it.
