Why now? Why only PC ??

I hope there'll be an iPhone version of this.

My theory is it's mostly about them establishing their digital store front. Publishers are starting to get the clue that the future of game delivery will be all digital - and so they're scrambling to setup their own digital sales infrastructure because they don't want to continue to giving a healthy chunk of their profits to Valve.

Square doesn't have some big new PC game to get their foot in the door with people like EA did with Origin and BF3 or TOR. Next best thing is to re-release one of their most popular games of all time in space where it's been very difficult to both get a hold of and run.

I have to think that a lot of people aren't going to be making SquareEnix store accounts for this.

If they continued to use the Amano style everyone would be bone white, somber, and wispy with even more beads, belts, and strands going everywhere. Have you ever seen art of his where a character looked pretty stoked? No? Because they don't exist. Smirking Porum doesn't count.

And that would be pretty goddamned AWESOME.

Does not hold up. One of the worst games in the series in terms of story, combat, and world. People will play it again and be wondering what the big deal was.

@believer258: I prefer 6 to 7 as well but thats really for the battle system, I'd say if people are gonna pick apart 7 the same could be done to 6. Honestly I don't really have a good grasp on some of 6's characters. Edgar, Sabin, Shadow, Setzer, Relm, Gau, and Cyan I can remember what they were all about. But for some reason I can't remember what the deal was with what are debatably the 3 main characters Terra, Locke, and Celes. I could tell you nothing about there personalities or story other than Lockes a thief, Terra's esper/slave, and Celes was a soldier and she attempts to kill herself if Cid dies. Also what was Kefka's reasoning for doing anything he did?

Maybe if they did something like Okami or El Shaddai that would be cool. But even then I think I'd get tired of so much whimsy and feminine looking dudes wearing tiaras and rat tails reclining back midair in a middle eastern gothic city. But if there is no stylization too it, Nomura can put as many belts on someone as he wants and add another antler to Seymour's hair. I rather take that than every character having that skin tight armor Amano does.

Yep, and that's just advice that some bloke edited into the Wiki at some point. I, however, do think that linking the sarcasm page is a much better way of making my sarcastic intent clear. It doesn't get in the way of the words and people almost always read the words I have written before clicking the link. This way, the people who will catch the sarcasm anyway won't be bothered by the stupid fucking faux-html tags that are detailed on that page, and the people who won't catch it will soon find out that it was, indeed, sarcasm and they do not need to quote me to tell me otherwise. I guess I could link the Wikipedia page for sarcasm but that's no fun at all.

And, besides, that warning is generally intended for TVTropes users.

I feel like if you discount just one of the characters from each game than you'll have a cast of males that look somewhat masculine. Cloud, Hope, Zidane, Tidus, and Vann, take them out and your left with a bunch of much older dudes. Everyone knows Vann wasn't even supposed to be there, its all just marketing. Looking at the Amano artwork, that is a little harder to do.

Really though feminine characters don't bother me that much. Look at an Amano picture of Setzer in google, then one of Farris, It's the same character. His art just looks the same because everything is so white. You know lightning and Cloud look a lot alike, but I don't think I'd ever confuse the two. Also his art is just dull at times, people complain about the brownness of games, his art has a lot of whites, browns blacks, and grays, then everything else looks washed out.

@Nottle: You're right, that's a good point about there being just one super feminine dude in each of the later Final Fantasies.

I think preference for one designer or the other is just a question of taste. I prefer Amano's designs because they don't look like typical japanese anime bullshit. Later Final Fantasy characters look like they'd not at all be out of place if suddenly they appeared on an episode of Naruto. Admittedly, I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy VI, and the characters in that game are the most memorable in the series to me. There are a lot of characters I like from later Final Fantasies, though. hell, I'm playing XIII right now and most of the cast aside from Hope and Snow are pretty alright.

Or, you know, use any of the tricks explained on the trope page, like using faux-html tags or exaggerated writing to convey the point...

I'm kidding, I'm just poking fun at the series. It's a really easy series to poke fun at. As for the differences between Nomura and Amano's art, I don't really have a preference.

I explained why I didn't want to use faux HTML tags in my post (it kind of ruins the sarcasm) and despite using clearly exaggerated writing a lot of people still won't get that it's sarcasm. So the best route for me is to link a page that defines sarcasm in some manner. I like TVTropes a lot, so I use TVTropes.

And, like I said before, that warning is for TVTropes users in the TVTropes Wiki. See, look here:

I'm happy enough that it's HD, but if you're going to bring FFVII back, just put in the work and update the graphics, already. You know that's what the fans want. Just do it. Stop messing around.

@Gordo789: There is something unique about the Amano style. There could be a way to put that style in a game and it would look absolutely amazing. However i think about this:

And I just don't think it looks all that great. Everyone looks like they are made of fine china. VI is my favorite from the series as well and when you look at Amanos art and then the in game models some things are way off. I can't think of Terra with blonde hair or Celes cosplaying as Dagger.

If they don't make a game that looks like a drawling/paintings than that is where I object because the 2 complaints i hear most are that Nomura makes girly looking boys and he over accessorizes the characters, but I feel like Amano is guilty of it too he just does it with style.

@believer258: Its all good. I really don't care if you make fun of these things because it is true. But with Lightning they clearly thought "we want to make a female cloud." With Setzer and Farris, that just how Amano draws pretty people.

Assuming it's a reasonable price, I'd be happy to get Final Fantasy VII and play through it again. It's years since I've played it. I don't see why it's weird to be re-releasing old PC games. I mean, GoG have been doing it for years and no one complained then. It is a bit weird that it's exclusive to the Squeenix store, but they obviously think that the FF VII name has enough might behind it to sell even if it's not on an established digital distributor like Steam or GoG, and they want to keep 100% of the money rather than having to give Valve or CD Projekt a cut.

I'll pay for this and play it again. The games of old are better than 90% of the crap released in the past 10 years.

Haters gonna hate on FF, FF7 and Square Enix.

EDIT: I should add that even the SE games in the last 10 years have been mostly crap. That's why I'd prefer remakes/rereleases.

I'm more wondering the purpose of re-releasing this on PC a second time. Some sort of collection would be something that would interest me more, and I love FF7.

It's odd to wonder how Final Fantasy VII became so popular. Reading these and more comments from the internet, you'd think it was the worst game ever.
