Herd behavior. Most people probably don't remember how much fun they had playing the game, so their own forgotten opinions get replaced by the opinions of others. it's a simple case of "lots of other people think that way so it must be true" spreading from one weak-minded gamer to another.

So they add nothing really and people will buy it again and praise it like the best game ever again? Well only the fanboys will at least. The rest will see the game was only good at the time.

LULZ this is horrible almost as bad as final fantasy 7 it's self. the trailer the announcment, the programming, the bad final fantasy game everything.

Oh and for some fucking reason square is listing the god damn game with specs that would run fucking crysis in high or meduim detail even though the crap PC version of the game from 1998 could run on my fucking pentuim 2 with a voodoo 2 GPU back in god damn 1998. And that damn PC had tons more power than the damn ps1.

This is 1000% proof that Fucking recommend system specs on games are 100% crap and they are all listed as too damn high

This will be the worst programming job since big rigs trucking if you need that much fucking power to run this crap game your programmers are on weed and didnt do jack or you highered numb nuts that need to go back to programming school.

What the fuck could it be running the windows OS? You can run this game at fucking beyond HD resolution at 2560 x 1600 on a fucking radon 9700 pro or geforce and a pentuim 4 and still have tons of fucking cpu and GPu cycles left over to run a fucking simulation of robot cats and 12 nes games.

Does the PC version allow you to use just the mouse to click through menus and stuff? If so, it might be decent to play on a Surface Pro tablet. Maybe updating the PC version is about the mobile/tablet port team familiarizing themselves with the source code to pave the way for an iOS port. Surely porting the PC version over to the iPad is a better idea than emulating the Playstation version, if they were indeed planning on bringing FF7 out on that device, right?

I want to believe that they are testing the waters to see how relevant FF7 may still be for the eventual FF7 remake. Or they are just doing it, because they know that the rabid FF7 fans will buy anything FF7.

What an awful movie voice guy trailer. Not really encouraging, just another rerelease, and I honestly don't think there's much to be improved in a remake.

Okay, so. FFVII at several points uses an unreliable narrator. It also talks about concepts like the Promised Land or the Cetra without directly showing them. Instead, it shows how those ideas are unbalancing the characters and the world. Much of the story is completely offscreen, building up in your imagination - and it shows you the occasional glimpse, the occasional twist on what you thought you had figured out. When smart people tell you they love FFVII, this is why. It's the same reason why people tend to like A Song of Ice and Fire, or Morrowind - the way it's told makes them theorize about what's really going on. For my part, that's the main thing I enjoy in any form of entertainment. Others have different tastes, I guess.

At the time, FF7 introduced a lot of us to more complicated storytelling - but it also had the basic kids save the world FF plot, so that helped. For my part, I'd been playing FFs since the first, but the earlier games all had fairly straightforward and literal storylines. Up to the point where FF6 shows the world of the Espers, it was pretty interesting, but after that, the story sort of stalled. They must have realised this at some point between the two games, because they share a lot of the same DNA otherwise.

FF7 also used boobs, polygons, swearing, and a big sword to popularize the game as 'grown up' Final Fantasy. Some people don't like that stuff - for my part, I can appreciate a well executed pander to the market.

whats going on here? is this actual real? i've been playing ff7 on the PSX emulator for years now. why would anyone buy this?

Your not wrong but mainly the hatred for this particular entry into the series was because of the influence this game had over most of the FF's (and other RPG's) that came after it... art style, characters etc. that some people just aren't into. Those people need to blame Tetsuya Nomura not this game. After VII Square gave him more control over the franchise than just doing artwork. After they fired Sakaguchi they put Nomura in charge completely and then the franchise went completely to hell. People love to blame FF7 for this but all the problems the franchise suffered from afterwards is all Square and Nomura's doing.

I just found it doesn't age well at all. When it was all about the pretty graphics, I didn't mind waiting around for the bar to fill. But I think it's quasi-turn based combat is really boring. They made the new final fantasy's a faster pace by adding the class switching, but when you're just queueing up attacks the whole time it's pretty shitty.

The graphics definitely haven't aged well. No doubt about that. But I just replayed FF8 not too long ago (my favorite in the series) and it holds up quite well.

Being all contrarian. Soon, no one will like the game anymore. I can see hatred coming from the aftermath of that game, but sometimes you need a game to shake things up.

The thing I hate about FF7 is all the sequels to it. It messed with some interesting characters. I played FF7 a few years ago and for some reason it was some time after after I saw the movie Advent Children, I didn't like the movie, Cloud just seemed too much like Squall in hindsight but in FF7 I think he has one of the more interesting arcs in the series, there is as much characterization in him as any "golden era" FF protagonist.

I think I (and many other people) need to play that game again sometime. I don't remember Cloud being so laconic until like a 3rd through the story.

The marketing for this is weird across the board. That entire trailer just seems so amateurish, especially considering it's for one of the most beloved games of all time. There's an faq blog on the SE site where the guy answering questions doesn't actually know half the answers to the stuff he's been asked, like what the music will be like or whether this will be a retranslation. Everything about it just seems so.. odd. Like they're not putting any effort into this release whatsoever. I wonder if the cutscenes will be the same fuzzy avis that where in the original PC release.

Overlly dramatic announcement for a port of a fourteen year old game. That reminds me that Eidos released the pc version of FFVII when it came out. Square Enix will gladly trade nostalgia for your money.

If I get this, does that mean I'll be supporting them in bringing the other FF's to PC?

Hopefully it is as cleaned up as possible, better UI, textures, translation, skipable summons maybe? let's hope. Great game though.

I love FF7, but this is already on PC, so this is kinda weird, would much rather have an HD pack of 7-9 come out for all platforms, but I guess this is nice for people who haven't played it before, they don't have to jump through hoops to get it to run anymore.

Yeah, I think it was just a lot of people's first JRPG, and thus they have a lot of nostalgia for it. It was really the game that propelled the genre into the mainstream in the West, which is probably unfortunate. I remember seeing all of the FMV, which was not all that common at the time, and how cool that looked. Then I played the game...and after the game that at the time was called Final Fantasy III, what a disappointment it was.

There's a bit of revisionism that goes on with Final Fantasy. FFVII was fine, and pretty groundbreaking at the time. I still remember it very fondly, with all its little quirks and all. I kind of get the nostalgia people have for it. But I think it's kind of the same thing as with music. Most people seem to like the first album they heard by a band best. Which fine, until they can't move past it any more.

And in the case of FFVII what we've gotten out of that is a super-dull CGI movie, and a bunch of inconsequential spin-off games. The world and the characters aren't really compelling enough to justify any more time spent on them. Vincent was cool when he was a weird vampire-mutant-thing with a mysterious past. And Cloud was always exceptionally uninteresting - they wrote the fact that he literally doesn't have a personality into the story. Aside from nostalgia, I don't think there is anything that necessarily makes FFVII's story or gameplay any better than VIII or IX, or VI for that matter.

So colour me sceptical. I think it holds up perfectly well as an early 3D PS1 RPG, and maybe with a bit of an up-res and a better translation this version will be totally fine and unremarkable?

Im on board, and for no real reason. I cant help but love vii. Also people should keep in mind that there is a pretty dedicated mod community out there for the original PC release of the game. Im not sure how that stuff will mesh with this new release but it could be interesting.
