Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin Sure Does Look Like a Final Fantasy XI Expansion

Did you know this is the last official release on the PlayStation 2? Only in Japan, of course.

Oh yeah, a Final Fantasy XI expansion in 2013, of course.

Wait, what?!

Of course.

Also this trailer is far, far too dramatic for its gameplay. At least they... didn't try to oversell it graphically? Guess they're saving that for FFXIV trailers.

So THIS is what the Squenix dude was talking about in the PS4 conference.

"Please be excited for E3... where we desperately throw millions away on a 10 year old game."

Yes, it may seem crazy that this game is chugging along after a decade. The thing is, Square have announced this is the most profitable Final Fantasy ever. It's put more money in their pockets than FF7! With how horrifically mismanaged S-E is, they need this quiet, dependable subscriber money to continue.

Could I come back to this? I dunno, man. It's still not very solo-friendly. Last time I re-upped, I could take a job from 1 to 60 in random parties over a couple days, but the level cap quest was still not something meant for a human to solo. Music is still charming as hell, but the graphics engine that they're locked to makes the eyes bleed.

I have not played this game for as long as I have played this game. Five years played. Five more years since canceling.

Sure, if it still makes money.

Can't help but feel for the game devs though, no doubt staring over at the guys making the newer stuff and being incredibly fucking jealous.

@galacticpunt: Which is amazing considering how hard they make it for you to start playing it on PC. I could never get Verified by Visa or the Mastercard one to work so I was out of luck, they missed out on hundreds of dollars from me because I couldn't give them my money.

Pretty amazing to see this game being covered after all these years. Sunk way too much time into it back in high school.

I am still surprised at how well this game has aged just in a visual sense. It is hanging extremely well compared to other MMO's on the market.

Maybe it's the benefit of the lower graphical standard in the MMO market but man, still pretty with really nice character models.

This trailer looks like it was slapped together in a day. Did they throw this out to get attention for their biggest cash cow because of Wada announcing losses and leaving the company?

I wish this game was easier to get back into, I'd love to play it again for a month or two, but I'd barely get anything done in that time without spending hours looking for parties.

There was a time in my life where Final Fantasy was my favorite series, but now whenever I hear there's a new release this is my response:

@biggiedubs: No way, I don't think so man. The people put on the FF XIV project released the biggest flop in the MMO space ever (which is saying something) and now have been tasked with rebuilding the game in a new engine and under a new director (FF XI staff got promoted to FF XIV to fix it) to launch it a second time. Considering the HUGE uphill climb in front of the FF XIV project, I imagine the small team still churning out FF XI content doesn't envy them in the slightest. At least the FF XI folks are working on a game that they know people play and that they know actually works.

Typical day 1 server congestion but only 3.5 hours to download the update. Not bad compared to past expansions.

Back in 1999 I never would have imagined that they'd still be releasing PS2 games after the announcement of the PlayStation 4.

How to fix the Final Fantasy series:

  1. Fire the current creative behind Final Fantasy
  2. Create two teams, Final Fantasy East and Final Fantasy West, employed with Japanese and American / European / pretty much anyone else respectively.
  3. Allow the two teams to create games that focus on the gameplay interests of each culture.

This way, we'll end up with at worst another crappy, esoteric Japanese RPG and a failed attempt at a Western RPG, and at best something that rivals Persona 4 from one team and Dragon Age: Origins from the other.

Also, under no circumstances should Joel Schumacher be hired for either team as a creative lead OR consultant.

Lol @ comments from people that have never have or never intend to even play the damn thing.

Also, it's probably the only one still making them money.

As for the actual game---*gets his ten foot pole out*

This game's pacing was so damn slow. I almost feel like I got suckered into it because it was the first MMO I'd ever played at the time. By the time I finally got my sweet Dragoon I'd lost all interest in playing (yep, I only got to level 30).

It was only late last year that I kinda stopped playing the game, and I might still hop in now and then when I feel like it. It was the last game that truly felt like a Final Fantasy (with maybe exception for some of FFXII) but I feel like I've long had my fill of it.

Still loved my time with it though; it was the only MMO that didn't assume you were brain dead and needed to be spoon fed everything (for better and for worse). And it still looks pretty great for a game that came out in 2002. It has a better, longer lasting art style than most MMO's still coming out today.

@development: They changed that a LOT over the last few years. Now you can hit the level cap in about a week, including the limit break quests.

Also I absolutely loved this game. I have to hold myself back right now, but I might cave in and end up trying out this expansion.

I loved Final Fantasy XI back in the day and got sucked into those marathon playing sessions that cause young asian men to die in odd places. Thank god I was able to escape, and seeing these ridiculous expansions give me no desire to come back. Seriously I would love to know who thinks of the names to these fantasy places for FFXI. It's like they just throw letters together and go..."yep that's where our expansion is, the Castle of Xoaweftlj." In case you were wonder I just made up that name by hitting random letters on the keyboard.

Loved this game. Lost so many hours/years to it. I wish more MMOs were as secretive with their game mechanics. To me it is the only MMO that actually has a sense of adventure.

@galacticpunt: I was able to get through a few of them by myself, but they are rather difficult. Nowadays, though, all you need is one guy at the level cap and he can bring you through it. Which is a hell of a lot easier than having to find and entire party.

FYI to people talking about graphics. There used to be a registry edit you could do that would allow you to specify the texture resolution. The game looked pretty damn great and didn't have all the muddyness of the default texture resolution or what the game options allowed you to set it to.

I don't know if it is something you still have to do or not though.

EDIT: Just remember this game was released in 2002 on the Playstation 2.

I still get occasionally tempted to come back to this game. Especially being told that they made it crazy easy to level up characters anymore. But FFXIV looks like it's on the right path to being a solid MMO, and I'd rather just wait for that re-release (especially since I already paid for the original so I won't have to buy the "new" one).

As someone who got totally sucked into this game back in the day, this is really tempting me to dip my toes back in. Really glad to see it still has a strong (if modestly-sized) community.

Would love to know whether they've dealt with the over-/under-populated servers problem that was going on around the Treasures of Aht Urgan days.

I tried this game out on the PC after spending a while in WoW... and I gotta say it is not very friendly to the PC community. The interface was harshly ported and not very comfortable or sensible for a keyboard/mouse.

I gotta say that I'd much rather see MMORPGs like PSO2 and Tera on consoles, which are designed from the ground up to be controller-friendly. I've played both, and while I don't care to continue on PSO2 until the NA version is released, Tera is still fun for the most part.

Now if only we could get a truly cross-platform MMORPG going, with a controller-friendly MMORPG fully accessible and playable via PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. Fat chance....

@trancequina: I still play on a more casual basis. There has been a lot of changes that make the experience much different from the ToAU days (for better or for worse). A lot of content has become low-man, but there is still a core of alliance based situations.

Keeping this in mind, while the server populations are not what they used to be (2000-4000 at any given time), they seemed to have evened out. I rarely find myself with <1000 on the server but at the same time there is never a huge influx of people, with the exception of new content releases. Remember that they have also consolidated the servers a few years ago (2010 maybe?) in order to even out the populations.

I started FFXI in 2004 and swore it was my game of the forever. I left FFXI in 2008 and swore I'd never come back.

Yesterday, my copy of the game with all expansions came in from Amazon. Never Say Never Again, eh?
