Find Out What Makes DICE's Frostbite Engine Tick

This video is more of a Need for Speed advert than anything.

I love how all the BF footage looked great and the NFS stuff just looked mediocre.

Please DICE use this tech to make Mirror's Edge 2.

I gotta say, I really like all this cross-team engine and asset sharing that EA's been doing lately. It seems a bit odd at first glance, but I can see that kinda stuff leading to faster advances in games. I wouldn't mind if Frostbite became the new Unreal engine, for instance. Except all EA companies are free to use it without having to license it. That sounds like it could be beneficial to a lot of developers and IPs.
 
Edit: Oh, and yes... please let DICE's success make Mirror's Edge 2 finally happen... pleeeaaase.

Absolutely! This video really had me clamouring to see more Battlefield, The Run however still just looks generic as fuck. Anybody really care about a Need for Speed character who isn't Razor Callahan?

They're recording a video about Frostbite in a chiller. See what they did there? Harrr? Hurr?

From what I played of The Runs demo, it's neither gorgeous like BF3 or playable as last years NFS.

Hey DICE and EA, here's an idea, how about a little game called Mirror's Edge 2?

I like how the guy on the left has all these great different things to say and great footage about Battlefield 3, and the guy on the right is always saying the same thing like "yeah, our concept of a cross country race" "this race from the west to the east" "the visuals from coast to coast"

That aside, EA should just let every team use Frostbite 2, great engine.

audio is the best part of bf3. freakin' amazing. also, funny how the soldiers and dude in nfs run with their body bent.

Check out this super sweet engine we made, new animation system, totally redid rendering, destruction and we shared it with other teams and now we have roads... er, we can build roads faster, roads are cool.

lol yea.. they need to make the people that MADE the engine talk in this video.. these guys clearly have no idea how it's made.

"We needed scale in the engine, so we make more content" wtf guy... that tells me NOTHING interesthing... waste of time dude.

BTW, if you REALLY want to "find out what makes Dice's Frosbite engine tick" (why does the content never deliver what the headline is promising?), you should go to the excellent DICE publication website, where the leading DICE developers share their GDC and SIGGRAPH talk slides and articles - in public ... for free. Very interesting indeed.

I also follow some DICE Duder/Dudettes on Twitter.

I got a very strong Mirrors Edge feel during the Russian missions in Battlefield 3. There was a lot of coloured walls, clean white offices and modern design. It was a really nice change from the rest of the game and made me think that they must be making Mirrors Edge 2.

I haven't been interested in the NFS games for years now but after seeing what they have been able to do with the new engine (of which I am a big fan of from BF3), I may try and fit The Run into my ever increasing "must play games of the year" list.

The game engine is called FrostBite 2, hence the freezer. The guy on the right looked like he was about to collapse from the cold.

does BF3 retail requires you to visit a web page before playing it?

@buckybit: Thanks for the link. I was really hoping that they'd go into the technical aspects of the engine in this video but alas it was just a big advertisement. I'm going into animation and game design so I like to see all the lighting and rendering technical points.

I get it guys. Doesn't mean, it's ok to accept random marketing blips as 'content' on the GB website. They (Jeff & Co.) could deny accepting these kind of marketing videos.

This really is different, since it is not a game trailer, but (more likely) a promotional video, intended to sell the Frostbite engine to fellow developers and other studios? There is no editorializing GB article, to put this in any context. It's just "here - we found this leftover" - not delivering on the promised headline.

There always was a shady line between "journalistic content" and "advertisement" - you cover our game, you get 'free exclusive' content - is a common marketing scheme.

Making publishers pay for advertisement instead swallowing down every drip they want to share with us for free wouldn't be a bad idea? Extending the GB/WM revenue/income stream? Keeping the line clean between "this is an ad - and this is what we think (editorial)" would help keep this website great, colorful & distinct, instead watering it down and turning into something "whatever - it's on GB too"?

The day GB started putting up trailers wasn't something I liked neither. GB never was a one-stop-shop for all video game news/content. But they have to feed the daily beast and keep the clicks coming?
