Well, it looks like Everquest 2 is still alive and kicking enough for them to put money and energy into something like this.

How many subscribers does Everquest 2 have?

They still make expansions for this game, ya'll haha

I played it for a little while- it's not a terrible MMO. It is weird to see a trailer for something for it here, though. While I think it's fine it never seemed to have much relevance past its first couple of years.

Freeport needs more than a paintjob. Back when I played, the place had an awful layout. Nuke it and claim it for the Qeynosians.

I guess they were not kidding when they said that this Quest would take forEVER...

I feel like this was uploaded just to be made fun of. Not taking no bait.

I was going to ask why they'd bother making a trailer for this game, but I remembered that the game is going free-to-play. The restrictions on the non-paying accounts are sort of funny (http://www.everquest2.com/free_to_play/game_overview), but I suppose that's how you make money on a free-to-play game - put the enticing features behind a paywall.

FYI, Everquest 1 is still alive, being patched, and making money. These games clearly aren't dying off anytime soon.

@Scodiac: No, according to their website, "We do not have an exact date at this time, but we are anticipating releasing EverQuest II as Free-to-Play early December 2011."

@fargofallout: Go to www.everquest2.com right now. I guess, there are different versions of the game. You can play it for free now though.

Translation: Kill 10 guys (by hitting 1-2-3-4 on your keyboard), then come back for your reward. Repeat hundreds of times, in varying capacities, over and over until you hit max level. Proceed to horrific raid end-game grind.

EQ2 was a better game than a lot of people gave it credit for in its day. This is not its day, however, and WoW definitely won the argument on 'best graphics' versus 'best art'. I don't see how a trailer highlighting things that, at best, might look good to current players is a good value proposition for SOE.

I remember playing EQ2 quite a long time ago and I actually enjoyed it, I respect EQ2.

I apreciate what EQ2.. well EQ in general did for the mmo genre. Without it there would be no Wow, SWTOR ect, they mainsteamed the gameplay and created what Blizzard to the greatest extent "perfected"..

The biggest Issue is just that. The mechanics have been taken on, developed and uptimized with newer games, and EQ is now just too damn dated. This trailer would have been cool 6 years ago, but nothing about it sounded or looked in any way exciting...Sorry..

This game is for the few die-hard fans that just wount let go, and no one ells.. Speaking from experience..

This just made me realize, all MMO's are boring and bad. Oh god, what the hell was I doing playing them so much.

They still haven't fixed that horrible lighting engine.. Everything i the outside areas looks like it's under tube lighting. Say what you will about WoW's 8-year-old graphics but they have the atmosphere pat.

Never played EQ2, except for a short demo like years ago, but from the video ... ya the lighting does look pretty bland. They really need to upgrade it.

That said, WoW's - which I had played a lot of - lighting engine isn't much better. They "color" the lighting depending on zone, it's basically no different from looking through glinted glass. It's a pretty cheap and primitive trick. It totally breaks down when you stand exactly at the boundary of zones.

The zone designer were careful to prevent things looking too bad by ensuring the connection points between zones have environments that look decent in both "lighting settings" but all that went out the window when they introduced "flying". Ever look into Terokkar Forest from Hellfire Peninsula from the air? The colors look all wrong, like you are tripping on acid - or at least that's what I think tripping on acid is like.

I really, really wanted to like EQ2 all 40 trillion times I tried the trial and free version, but leveling up feels like a chore and I never really did get the hang of the like 4 talent tress they give you. Also, I'm extremely picky about how my character looks and the fact that the majority of the armor is each armor class is based off of one model and just re-skinned over and over doesn't help.

The sad thing is this totally seems like my type of game, but the few design decisions that don't with me, really don't click with me so I'm not sure if I'll ever actually put time into this game.

Man, the art in this game looks soulless as hell.

In the original EQ, Freeport was a corrupt trading city. I guess mister "Man, what if you power it using souls, that's evil!" thought that was too subtle? Now it looks like a generic Dark Lords lair.

That's what you get for playing Everquest, I guess.
