Reed Richards built a machine called the Ultimate Nulifier that sapped Galactus' abilities. (so plot device. lol) "

Reed Richards did not build it, he didn't even know it existed. It was built by another race a long time ago and Galactus had it on his ship so no one could use it against him. The Silver Surfer told the FF about it and Torch was sent to retrieve it, because he was the only one capable of making the voyage and surviving. Torch brought it back to Earth and gave it to Reed. Reed threatened to use it, though he truely had no idea how it even worked. But Galactus didn't know this so he left Earth alone.

In main continuity, Galactus has never been defeated totally, though in the recent story line leading to the death of Torch, Galactus was defeated and his body was used as an energy source to traverse from an alternate Earth to main continuity Earth.

I thought he built it. regardless. my point still stands that it was all a plot device.

It pretty much comes down to bargaining. Either bargaining with him, or other equivalent cosmic entities to back him down.
