Finally got that damn quest!

Posted by Ghostfish

Given Jeff's love for Picross 3d, I'm surprised it didn't make it onto the list.

good on ye cowburn ... it's the hardest thing anyone will ever do.

Does Jeff have some kind of beef with Brad? I can't listen to the deliberation podcasts because they are constantly barking at each other.

Posted by zombie2011

no surprises in this one.

Some of the placement is a little surprising but I mostly agree.

Vinny's list is still the best one so far.

Good list, well thought out. Might have sold me on Darksiders. Need to look into that a bit. I'm not totally sure I want a "dark Zelda" (I liked the earlier, light-hearted ones best) but I could see that being a good premise for a game.

Thanks for all the Holiday content, GB.

I am surprised that Super Street Fighter IV didn't place.

To be fair, simply calling Darksiders a dark Zelda is selling is incredibly short. The game combines elements from God of War, Devil May Cry, Zelda, and even Portal to create it's own original game.

And that's why it's so great about these things, they aren't going to have the same opinion about games all the time.

Nice list.

another 2 outta 10, its very clear now that mass effect 2 will get goty, and will be the shortest deliberation ever.

*slow clap*

guess he really never like red dead at all.  i can see not being number 1.  but not even in the top ten? wow

Posted by dudemeister

Don't know why but having Black Ops in this list feels unGerstman like.

Posted by EpicReflex

Glad Darksiders isn't being completely overlooked

The problem is that the game apparently sells *itself* short. I never found the game appealing. I eventually bought it, simply because at $15 I figured I couldn't go wrong considering all the praise it has received. But even still, I've never played it. Never even opened it. Why? Because the art and cover and promotional material and videos for it have always given me (and many others, I think) the impression that it is less "yay, zelda-a-likes!" and more Bayonetta-ish thirteen-year-old-boy masturbating furiously with one hand while stroking a roided out "bad ass dude" action figure with insane muscular proportions, 8,000lbs of armor, and a sword the size of the fucking Chrysler building in his other hand. It turned me off, instantly.

The only reason I'll probably *eventually* get around to playing it is because it has received consistently high praise. The game really failed to sell *itself*, though. Any sales it has received should be attributed to all the reviewers out there who bothered to play it and give it a positive recommendation. Otherwise, I think most of the world would have ignored it.

No surprise that Mass Effect 2 is number 1 on Jeff's list.

On its own, Black Ops is a surprisingly good multiplayer FPS experience with an enjoyable quick-paced single player campaign attached to it. In reality, it's a much different beast, thanks to the people who play it and that makes it difficult to justify placement on a top ten list, I think.

I played a ton of it. I'd still be playing a ton if it, possibly. Instead, I played non-stop for about six weeks and then woke up one morning and could not bring myself to deal with the ENDLESS stream of racism, homophobia, threats, and inane banter and bullshit, hearing people carry on conversations while the mic is on, or jack-asses playing their music non-stop over the mics to show how "awesome" they are, or just screeching into their microphones to piss people off. It is the single worst multiplayer experience -- due to the people playing it -- that I have ever had, in almost fifteen years of FPS games. Even Modern Warfare 2 wasn't this bad. And yeah, you can turn it off, but if you're not going to communicate at all with your team in team-based games, what the fuck is the point of playing it in the first place?

I don't associate myself with circles that use racist or homophobic language, so to go from normal regular old humanity to hours of nightly sprees of hundreds (yes, hundreds) of utterances of "n******!" among countless other things is grating. On average, the people who play Black Ops might just me the most ignorant and stupid fucking wastes of flesh on the planet.

Of course, that's only part of it. I've never wished more that there was some requirement that you register your age on XBOX and that it adhere to that in games. I mean, if I chose "RECREATION" as my gaming "area" and YOU chose "family" (and that should be REQUIRED for everyone below a certain age), then why should I have to spend hours every night playing on teams filled with people twenty years younger than me who act like fucking assclowns? Why is there no "filter out children" option, so I can play with mature adults? (Although one could argue there aren't many on Black Ops).

Really unfortunate, because I'd still be playing the shit out of what is a fairly fantastic game, if it weren't for the playerbase that ruins the multiplayer experience. As it stands, I don't even give a shit about map packs or anything else, in the future. I think I'm done with the game. Period. In fact, this may have finally ended my interest in *any* future COD/MW game, whatsoever.

What no vvvvvvvv, or whatever? I thought Jeff was in love w/that game. And no fighting game...hhmmmm...still love his comments on ME2.
Posted by Toxin066

Jeff, you have good taste in games.

Posted by LiquidSwords

Some great picks Jeff!

Posted by Mezmero

Somewhat surprised that you didn't pick Super Street Fighter IV on this list but I think I understand why.  It may not have raised the bar of its amazing predecessor it took up most of my time this year.  Great list with a lot of stuff reflecting my personal favorites this year.  There's no slowing down giantbomb now.  Keep doing what you do to make this website great.

Posted by GoodKn1ght
@Branthog:  Unfortunately it will always be this way, people love animosity and take full advantage of it. I would say find a good group of friends that play and pretty much play exclusively with them and it will be much more enjoyable. Usually if you have a like four friends you can always either gang up on the racist little kid, sometimes fun, or if everyone mutes him he'll quit in the next round.
I have yet to play black ops but It is my experience that latter in a games life it gets a lot better, which yes defeats the purpose of getting it on day one but i'd say just jump back in in a month and maybe things would have simmered down and then you get to enjoy what is a good game.
Posted by CouncilSpectre

Thank you, Mr Gerstmann.  You are one of the few bright sparks in this year's otherwise depressing Giantbomb's GOTY coverage.  While other people on this website feel the need to trash talk a certain game that they had previously given 5 stars to, you can cut through the BS and tell it like it is.

Have a happy new year, Duder.

Posted by ch3burashka

Solid list, solid delivery. I'm a bit disappointed in the overall structure of the videos, that there is no special intro to the #1 game.

Posted by Meowayne

The fact that something like darksiders is called "mature" is just so incredibly fucking sad. Please grow up, videogames.

Posted by Jayross

Meh Effect 2.

Posted by Claude

Nice list, Mass Effect 2 was my favorite game too. I liked it so much I played it on my 360 and PC.

Mature as in rated M, not mature as in deep and complex.  Everyone knows what it means in the context.  The fact that people still want to play this game of semantics is rather dumb.

The number one is pretty obvious 2010, nothing has beaten mass effect 2 and isn´t even close this year and I think the only one that can beat it next year is the sequel mass effect 3, gears of war 3 or perhaps uncharted 3. One of these three will win next year if none of them flops, and I don´t think anyone of them will. Only time will tell which one it´s going to be.

Mark my words lads!

VANQUISH ????
CASTLEVANIA:LORDS OF SHADOW ??

Posted by ImperiousRix

Man, I really need to play Bayonetta with all this praise.
That, Enslaved, and Darksiders are the trifecta of games I'm most disappointed in missing this year.
And all these lists have been great.  Although there are a few repeats here and there, it's good that there's such a breadth of different games on everybody's lists.

Edited by jakob187

WOW!  No VVVVVV?  I'm kinda shocked by that.

That said, I can't argue with the list...aside from the fact that I never played DJ Hero 2.  If it's like the first game but better, then I can totally understand.

@Branthog: The game barely got advertised until about two weeks before its release.

Edited by AV_Gamer

Very good list.

But where is vvvvvv?

Oh, and Happy New Year!
Posted by RedSox8933

I'm pretty surprised that Picross 3D isn't anywhere on this list.

Posted by gamerpigeon

considering how much these guys say that the rythm genre is OVER they dont alf like them

Posted by Kear

Well done, Jeff.  Mass Effect 2 is indeed the game of the year.
Posted by EpicReflex

I'd take Reach before Black Ops, and would give Cataclysm a mention.

Posted by Evelgest

No surprises? Meh, I'm surprised that SSFIV nor Picross 3D made Jeff's list.

Posted by TheKing

Can't take this list serious without Red Dead on it.

Posted by PillClinton

Nice!  Darksiders gettin' even more love from GB!  If there was an award for most underrated game of 2010, Darksiders would go unchallenged.

Posted by Vinny_Says

A lot of stupid: "No Red Dead? raaaahhh!!!" comments, obviously he never finished or cared for it. stop asking.

A real concern is why Picross 3D and SSFIV did not place, but the #1 spot was too predictable...

Ryan and Vinny have the coolest lists, with Ryan blowing my mind!

Posted by asdfghasdf

Good list, though the exclusion of SSF4 was a little surprising. Glad I'm not the only one who didn't rate RDR highly.
