Great interview! I had the chance to go to Zipper at the end of January and get my hands on multiplayer for a good 4 hours and I have to say the game is spectacular fun, especially the 'Classic' mode which retains the round-based, no health regen, 1 life per-round system of the original SOCOM. This game deserves more coverage than it's getting.

That Last Defense game mode that combines Conquest and Rush sounds friggin' brilliant. Bomb Squad sounds cool too. I love how the bomb technician is in that full "Hurt Locker" bomb suit. I just might have to get this.

The character models appear to be detached visually from the game world.  Why do so many PS3 games look like that?  Why aren't the models casting shadows on the ground??

they can still balance patch things and fix exploits people find. so yeah its still a Beta. but at the same time just a multiplayer demo.

Did they not do Confrontation which was an abysmal failure at launch and then never gained the traction in the MP space or was that developed by another group?

sure socoms animation and graphics arent up to par with other shooters but what people come to socom for is a true tactical experience where communication with your clan is more key then any other shooter ive played.  
im hoping the respawn aspect works for them but im gonna stick with the classic mode having one life per round really creates tension

@oysteinBrenne: Socom is a franchise coming from the era of realistic military tactical shooters, which don't exist these days. For the players wanting some good old gameplay from games like ghost recon don't have any options anymore, Socom 4 has promise to be what those players want. 
 
@donaldkhogan: There are shadows, along with environment shadows cast on player models. 
 
@Eljay:
 I don't think the people playing Black Ops are those that are fans of Socom, they are extremely different. For instance, I have never owned a playstation 2 or 3 so I never played the Socom games extensively but I DID play a ton of old Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six, which have the same feeling are are from the same era of military shooters on consoles and I loved those games. I really don't like the current shooters like CoD, apart from running through the singleplayer once and taking some pills for the headache I get afterwards. My tastes may not reflect all gamers who loved those old tactical shooters, but I tend to stick with other games these days and I play less shooters because there are less out there besides the perk driven quake style twitch shooters, which I never enjoyed.

For the most part they are, except in areas were they are already in shadows. The indoor areas do seem to have way too much ambient lightning though, making the shadowed areas look really bright. Of course, it's not in all lightning conditions people cast clearly visible shadows in real life either, but the indoor stuff did look off to me too.

It's been said a million times before but socom only gets a mindshare due to it being the only good console online shooter for ps2. The Market has moved on and I see no evidence they are moving with it. I don't ever want to see games do poorly but this is as generic as it gets.

@bwmcmaste: I don't think it will. SOCOM had a very specific feel to it, one that Zipper seems to be re-capturing in 4 and aiming it directly at fans of the franchise from past. They're not going to cover the market but if they get it right, they'll get a seriously hardcore fanbase like their first 3 games had.

I can't fucking wait for this. 
I've been a fan since the launch of the first game. Even got it with the headset bundled. 
Confrontation was a disappointment however I am considering buying the $150 bundle for SOCOM 4.

I've never played any previous SOCOM games, and I'd like to get into the franchise, but I'm not sure that there's been anything said so far that makes me care about SOCOM at all. All I heard was bomb mode, experience points, customization, and multiplayer.


Can someone tell me why this game/franchise is awesome?
