What's the problem for ladies to get body paint? They even probably are getting payed. What's the problem? Who do they hurt? If you don't want to be a part of that, don't be, nobody is making you stay and nobody is making them do it.

Let's have NO FUN at all then, shall we? Oh no no somebody does not approve that bla bla bla, fuck off.

Are you claiming that to have fun you need women to be naked? Because that makes you sound like a jerk. You can't see why people object to the idea of booth babes? At all? Really? It's not complex. A) It's advertising assholes selling their game short by assuming their game is so uninteresting that it needs breasts to make anyone pay attention. B) It's advertising assholes who think that gamers are lowest common denominator idiots who go wherever the titties are so they can leer, & then maybe catch sight of a game at the same time. I don't like being treated like an idiot personally & I'll judge something I see on merit. Maybe you are OK with that.

Never mind the fact that this shit is meant to be happening at professional trade shows & conventions which really says something about the games industry as immature. Would you see that at an Insurance Industry show? A cardboard manufacturer's show? No. So lets stop treating the games industry as if it is an over-sexed 15 year old boy.

Between Carrie whispering "shhh" to Jeff for no apparent reason, and Ryan bear-hugging Phil Fish, who seems fucking drunk at the end, this is one of the most heartwarming things I have seen on the internet in a while. Such a great show!

So, ten minutes calling for maturity, decorum, consideration, and greater inclusivity in the industry and then thirty minutes of crispy salted turd chips and penis-CAD talk. Yup. And no sense of irony about it either. Tsk. It must be great to be both an easily offended and greatly concerned, head shaking, scold trying to bring reason and order to a dirty dirty stupid world AND a wild edgy loco SOB who never met a line he didn't want to color outside of. Most of us have to just pick one of those or all the integrity flies away.

See, there is no contradiction in those things. At the end of the day you seeing a contradiction there only shows that you're kinda tone deaf. You can be edgy and funny and politically incorrect AND not be an asshole at the same time.

I think you accidentally stumbled on the core of the whole problem. I think there's a huge misunderstanding between those two things, that people out there are thinking that a call for not being an asshole means a call for being politically correct or boring. That's not the case. The more people figure out the difference the easier this transition to a more mature, more intelligent and, crucially, more fun industry this is going to be.

This was a really enjoyable discussion on a variety of interesting subjects, and I'm glad you had some ladies on to talk about ladies in the video game industry/business.

And now I'm going to watch as this comment no doubt gets drowned out by a bunch of misogynist creeps' nonsense.

Yeah, though it's sad that a bunch of people are going to take their reply as a confirmation that there are no issues at all in this industry. It's great that there are studios where women are treated as any of the other employees. But this show had a sample size of two, and there are uncountable accounts of a very different treatment throughout the industry as a whole.

Cool talks, for sure. Really loved the music segment, especially since Danny B was there.

Also, always good to hear Carrie talking about video games outside of a PR perspective. I generally agree with her taste in games, at least from what I've seen of her back during the Gamespot days.

Oh, and Phil Fish is awesome. Not only was he really interesting to listen to during that segment, but that ending with the afro was incredible.

If anybody doesn't understand what Giant Bomb is about, I think I'll just show them this video. It perfectly encapsulates both the interesting discussion side of things and the fucking hilariously crazy side of things.

Not to mention there are plenty of women in the industry who have said things that back up what was said by the two people on the couch. It works both ways.

Wait... That's it? Really?

And didn't the Giantbomb crew literally just say that during the first part GDC after party? I mean, it's true, Japanese game design has been stagnated for a while now.

But when everyone touches the side of their nose and looks into each other's eyes and says "well, that's a . . . European game" or "well, that's a Hungarian/Polish/Czech game" as a means of conveying how a game is lacking or peculiarly buggy or otherwise is totally okay.

It's more of how he said it that was particularly off putting. I don't recall the exact quote but I think he said "Japanese games suck" or something equally as rude right to the guys face, and Japanese people are polite to a fault so you can imagine how jarring that was for the guy.

He isn't an asshole but he does have huge problems expressing himself properly and often comes of as one.

Agreed. We should discount the anecdotal experiences of two people who are a minority of a minority filled with anecdotal experiences. Their replies are a confirmation that people need to calm the fuck down and grow the fuck up. They didn't dismiss actual mistreatment in the industry. They just offered a bit of perspective on it. Despite what some people might think, women are treated well in the technology industry. I'm sure they all have one or more stories to tell demonstrating exceptions to that, but no matter what Your Daily Gaming Website tries to portray, women aren't being forced to dress up like wenches and locked into go-go cages at the office, while being paid 10% the salary of men, who ogle and salivate over them from across the office all day.

And, ultimately, I don't work in the game industry, so what the fuck do you want me to do about it? By the constant flood of "oh noes!" about sexism in my RSS feed every day of the last two years, you'd think I was the CEO of every corporation in the industry instead of just some knucklehead buying the occasional game on the outside of the industry.

At a certain point - and especially when it's coming from middle aged white men discussing hypothetical offense - it starts to all just feel like a bunch of navel-gazing intended either to be click-bait or to improve the stock in yourself as to how other people perceive you. It's starting to feel like a cheap go-to bit of content-filler than anything else.

Also, can we stop misusing "misogynist" where it doesn't apply? It doesn't mean "insensitive" or "offensive" or "inconsiderate" or "stereotyping".

[Insert defensive comment here about how any criticism of my statements (even though they are supportive of women in the industry) are clearly from "misogynists", so that I can automatically discredit any who dare publicly take issue with any particular point.]

Everyone's got a different perspective. The views of Carrie and Stephanie don't discount the views of people like Anita Sarkeesian or Megan Marie. Carrie's reply isn't a "confirmation" of anything. She's just giving her opinion like anyone else. People on the internet are so concerned with declaring who's "right" and who's "wrong", which is what leads us down these pointless, useless arguments.

So did you ever read the entire quote or did you just form an opinion based to what people claim he said? Because he caught himself and said that that was a really bad way to say it literally right after he made his comment about the Japanese game market.

So in your world you can't talk about the "German car industry" or "American entertainment industry", because that would be racist? That is not what that word means.

He is not generalising about an entire race of people, he is generalising about the current Japanese development community. He's not saying Japanese people can't develop good games, just that recent Japanese games aren't good. I don't agree with him, but I don't think its racist

If someone is racist for thinking that the majority of a product a country makes is bad, then Japan is HELLA racist for not liking the xbox.

Yeah, though it's sad that a bunch of people are going to take their reply as a confirmation that there are no issues at all in this industry.

Note that I didn't say it discounted any views. Just that it offers some balance. People are completely losing their shit over this and everyone on all sides could use a little growing up. It isn't a "gaming industry" thing. It's a society thing. It's not going to be fixed in the isolation of the gaming industry. It's not going to improve overnight. It's going to improve over an extended period of time. No amount of constant game journalism coverage on things you and I can't do anything about is going to nudge that along faster. All this constant barrage is doing is causing people who (for whatever absurd reason) have an issue with maintaining the status-quo to fortify their position and many of those who support seeing things shift a bit to stop giving as much of a fuck out of sheer exhaustion from waking up to an RSS feed full of this endless debate full of pointless, useless, repetitive discussions.

But those discussions are what moves it forward, if no one talks about it... how can it be fixed?

While I agree that it does get blown out, but there is some validity to talking about why aren't there more women protagonist or African American protagonist (one's that aren't just steroetypes), I know we can't change the world, but we need more people to say, 'Yo that's not cool, we don't stand for it..' and maybe more people inside the industry to open up.

It's a long process and it won't change soon, but I am glad that there are some people who aren't gonna let it fade into the background.

@murdersmash: Yup! i said it, Ladies and Gentlemen, Phil Fish is literally hitler.

On a related note, if i was a musician (one who made REAL MUSIC MAN, NOT SOME POP BULLSHIT). You were a fan of mine, and i said in an interview i would never ever ever use a certain brand of guitar because i didnt like it's tone ( Presumably because i had a sponsorship from another guitar company). But then miraculously started to use that exact brand of guitar i swore i would never use as soon as my sponsorhip ended, would that make you question my integrity as an artist who is trying to make "real meaning music"?

If said guitar player was shit talking the brand he was sponsored by at the time he was still under contract to them, I'd say no integrity was lost.

I also have a problem with Patrick generalizing a lot of gamers as opponents of the phrase "games are an art form".

I myself do think that games are an art form just a books, music or movies. It just seems to me that some indie developers (Phil Fish included) want to give the appearance that "they" are the ones making "art games" and most of the other games out there are "not art" but mindless entertainment for the gaming masses.

Frankly the whole attitude seems a bit elitist and an exercise in ego boosting. When in fact most of the indie developers just like the independence from the big publishers and want to do things their own way. This doesnt grant them any more integrity than the developers with bigger cash reserves. Bioshock Infinity is a good example of this. The game is art in its purest form.

She's just giving her opinion like anyone else. People on the internet are so concerned with declaring who's "right" and who's "wrong", which is what leads us down these pointless, useless arguments.

I guess my initial post was pretty poorly worded. OK, this is all about anecdotes (and as they say, the plural of anecdotes is not data), and it's very possible gaming industry isn't more fucked up than any other industry, though the sexism seems to be more visible here than elsewhere. The sense I got from the GB chat yesterday (which was worse than usual), was that a bunch of people there thought "since she hasn't had any issues, there are no issues in the industry!". We have to be careful not to create a false sense of balance.

Obviously there are numerous problems when we try to assess the problems within the industry - there are several ways our views can get skewed - there are two opposing ways our perception can be biased, on the one hand, people who are content with the culture at their working place are much less likely to say that they don't have any issues than those who do, but on the other hand, those who have issues have much more to lose by speaking out about it - antagonizing their co-workers and boss, and becoming a public figure for the Internet to direct it's rage at.
