I would argue yes. They've been around longer than four years, and the two absolute atrocities they've churned out were games they got saddled with after years of botched development and unstintingly high expectations. DNF was never going to be a good game. A:CM was never going to be a good game. Gearbox just happened to be the ones that had the brilliant idea that they should be the ones to develop/release those inevitable atomic bombs of poor execution.

And they stood behind those games and sold them at full price while acting like they were worth peoples money. Even if they've done better in the past it shows they don't really have respect for their fans which I find disturbing.

Borderlands was a mediocre enough shooter without adding a fuck-tonne of systems for the sake of having a fuck-tonne of systems, which seems to be all that differentiates 'MOBAs' from... fuck, I dunno, Mario Party? Great, a shitty-feeling, first-person, hobby-grade Mario Party with tangos.

Was curious about this new title until hearing the MOBA part, definitely not something I enjoy playing so now wondering if this will do good for Gearbox or if they just got lucky with Borderlands (on gameplay & design) with a lot of their other stuff being rather average on the fun from the titles I've played. Time will tell.

I know it's waaay too early to judge but fuck it, I'll say it anyway.

This game doesn't look like it deserves a trailer so good. The character design seems so damn generic to me, and really -- a MOBA? (sigh). Oh, plus the logo for the name itself looked like garbage. At least in 2D and white.

But yeah, the trailer rocked. Fantastic choice of music with a well edited cut.

I like the character designs, and I like M83.

That's about all I can say from this trailer.

The title feels a little like unfair conjecture that's awaken the MOBA haters. My first reaction (based on the title) was to scoff, but the game doesn't appear to be a simple MOBA+FPS, like the article suggests. I'm no fan of Borderlands, but folks should probably understand what something is, before they start hating on it.

Here's a good article on the subject:

What do you even do in this game? It looks like some sort of enfos/tower defense style thing from the trailer, but they're calling it a MOBA? It's Destiny announcement confusion all over again.

Well they made a Diablo like game that was palatable to me so maybe they can do the same thing to a MOBA, but that's probably unlikely.

@torabi: always think where you're extending a word for effect, by adding a's to make it greaaat the word would be pronounced gree-aaaaaaht. Which is gibberish.

Also, I had no problem with gearbox games till that guy was a dick on this years E3 show, now, fuck them.

It seems like yesterday that Gearbox came out of left field and whacked me in the face with Borderlands. It's really strange to see that this studio has consistently dropped a notch on my radar with each subsequent release.

If anything, I think it's kinda funny how quickly the Internet turned on them after Aliens: Colonial Marines. Not that they didn't deserve every inch of shit they got for it, but, man, I can't imagine what it's like to see every scrap of good will you've garnered burst into flames like that.

Adding M83 to anything makes it better, even if it's somewhat awkwardly out of place.

Wow, there sure are a lot of clairvoyant, amateur reviewers who are also prejudiced against Gearbox!

I'm not sure a lot of these comments are much better than Randy's tweet. Right, he's not doing himself or this game a lot of favors, but we all know that was a bunch of stupid marketing lingo. We don't really know what this game actually is yet. Declaring Gearbox's "inevitable failure" at this point is colossally cynical, and that tweet will be long-forgotten by the time the game comes out.

At least when Gearbox has done genre-mashing, they've done it well. This could be interesting, and potentially very successful.

Also, is anyone really that surprised that there's an announcement trailer more than a year out from launch? Can we really fault Gearbox for doing that when that's pretty much what E3 was this year? I bet we didn't see this at E3 because it would potentially cannibalize attention from Evolve, being in a similar genre.

I'm getting particularly tired of everyone trying to cash in on the MOBA market.

Would you rather they kept trying to cash in on the regular FPS market?

Smite is third-person, right? Hmm. There's gotta be an FPS MOBA already out there... was Savage first-person?

Anyway, that trailer showed me nothing. What I took from it was an ex Disney artist liked the TF2 graphic style and made his own blend. That's where my imagination went.

@guanophobic: yeah that pretty much mirrors my response to this.

Now I get that they wanna make a MOBA. And i'm not bothered. But why does it have to look like other MOBAs?

Also the music choice for this trailer is insufferable. I hate you modern marketing.

Kind of like how the Giantbomb staff thinks Dead Island: Epidemic is a MOBA, which it isn't?

It literally says on their website, "The world’s first ZOMBA (Zombie Online Multiplayer Battle Arena) enters the finals stages as Deep Silver kicks off the Closed Beta for Dead Island: Epidemic". That game is absolutely a MOBA.

MOBAs have lanes, towers, creeps, bases, tons of characters, jungling, and tactics. Dead Island: Epidemic has none of that. It's just a class based RPG that focuses on PvP and completing objectives, regardless of their stupid marketing "ZOMBA" term.

Multiplayer Battle Arenas existed before DotA and its hundreds of clones, those elements are not mandatory to that genre.

Thank god someone else sees this. I thought I'd been spitting this idea into the wind.

Dynasty warriors is almost already a MOBA. It has lanes, creeps, and an unmanageable number of characters.

@bacongames: In the last four years, Gearbox has developed two of the worst-reviewed games of all time and one sequel that was merely disappointing. Is there any reason not to expect more of the same here?

What sequel was merely disappointing? I assume you mean Borderlands 2, which was a great game. It was not "merely disappointing."

I also assume you're referencing Duke Nukem as one of the worst reviewed games of all time. Which was primarily developed by other developers because Gearbox picked it up to market and polish it to make a quick buck off of the attention that the game had developed. Which worked. The game was profitable, as I recall.

Colonial Marines is the only thing I would hold against them. And that's only because I don't remember if there were extraneous factors at play with that game's development.

We have no real idea of what to expect from this game. Gearbox is undeniably a studio full of talented people. Even developers like that can have bad games. In fact, most moderately sized studios these days have their Colonial Marines to one extent or another.

Gearbox is still a capable studio, but they NEED to find a project they are passionate about. I don't think Duke or Aliens were those projects. I'm not sure if this is, considering it seems like it might just be 2K trying to capitalize on the whole MOBA craze. But this is certainly what I'd expect from a MOBA from Gearbox so maybe this is something they are excited and passionate about, and I think that the game will be pretty good if that is the case.

@benmo316: It's really not. It's a pretty good class-based, team-oriented multiplayer type of game. There is nothing to do in it aside from murdering/planing to murder the opponents.
