this must have been from the console versions

1080p and when the reload icon shows up near the ammo counter it's [R]. It's the PC version.

ok. well its an easy mistake to make. The console version is real close to the pc counter part

I think you missed the meaning of ZmillA's post. These are Call of Duty style console maps, not Battlefield proper maps.

The one thing I've always been enthralled with in Battlefield 3 is that it's pretty fuckin' spectacular at all ranges. After trying to scratch a strange epic-scale warfare itch with trying to get my head around ARMA II last summer I was amazed at the BF3 Alpha in August in how it brought suppression, bipods, vaulting, reviving/resupplying, and simple squad mechanics together to recreate the realistic... what I would call "bullets-are-scary" aspect of games like ARMA II into a setting that was fast, fluid, and intelligently crafted.

Battlefield 3 manages to provide the single best (IMO) FPS gameplay of any game ever with a combination of detailed and realistic animations (firing and reloading), dynamic accuracy, and a great level of bullet damage that in my opinion sits directly in the middle of the "too high" and "too low" gradient.

Now, I must deposit that jet and helicopter gameplay has never been as good as it was in BF2, in my opinion it will never be the same, but BF3 from the beginning has not been BF2-but-with-prettier-graphics, I always thought the shooting gameplay was basic. Sniping was boring, grenade launchers never hurt anybody, and LMGs were inaccurate. BF3 made a major departure adding multiple building interiors even to the Back to Karkand levels. Who knew that being able to clear out buildings in Karkand and Oman would add so much to the sequel?

There is some bullshit to be had, though, with the tightest BF3 maps. The servers doing 24/7 64 player Metro are completely insane, and the TDM on Canals is nothing short of a shotgun meat grinder. But I love me some Grand Bazaar. Like how I loved Ascension, Acta Non Verba, and Oasis (Conquest) in BFBC1, and Laguna Presa (SQDM) and Isla Innocentes in BFBC2... I enjoy the occasional close quarters match.

Variety is the spice of life, yeah? I pride myself as a Battlefield fan in being able to claim that I enjoy and can use every kit, every weapon, every vehicle, every attachment, every perk, on every level and still manage to do well and have a great time.

So just hold on, there is still a dozen maps for you to get your large battles on in, and more expected in the future (including a map pack that is nothing but huge, armor centric ones). I'm just impressed that Battlefield 3 is the first FPS to be able to make shooting other dudes fun whether in an office building or on Caspian Border.

Let players like me have their fun... I'll play Firestorm one match, and Donya Fortress the next, and not miss a beat.

I actually prefer some of the smaller maps. Problem with the biggers one like the one set in an oil refinery (i forget the name) is if you're not in a vehicle you're fucked!

I tried playing BF3 this week and it feels like kind of a wasteland. Apparently there is an average of 50k people playing, but when you do a server search for large servers (64p) with 1-10 free slots (ie, not full but not empty), I've only gotten about 6-12 results. And of those, most are "THIS ONE MAP 24x7 AND NOTHING ELSE!" and of all of the matching results, like two have KARKAND maps.

I dunno. It kind of feels like it has died off significantly. The game really isn't bad enough to justify some massive retreat, but that kind of seems like what is happening?

Yep, empty servers everywhere. The last patch fucked the game up. The suppression changes are over the top. And they changed basically every gun. Dunno why you would do that a few month after the game got released. It's not as fun as before the 1.04 patch.

@Branthog: Empty servers seem to be a US problem, game is still going strong here in Europe. But I agree that the patch ruined a lot of the fun with unnecessary nerfs and introducing a game breaking glitch that they have not yet patched (they did however patch in support for keyboard lights on Alienware keyboards, priorities!)

I don't get why people say "Battlefield isn't about close quarters", I mean Engineer and Assault classes work great close quarters work great in close quarters, Support are also good and covering tight areas with their light machine-guns and most agressive Recon players get in close anyway (one hit kill with bolt-action rifles being what they are). And there's shotguns and PDWs for ALL classes...

I get why people want big maps, but saying this is for "for CoD babies and console kids" is ridiculous. Even big maps like Operation Firestorm have TONS of close quarter fights in the warehouses or the streets/constrution site in Gulf of Oman.

...though DICE really do need to fix the M320 Dart... that shit is worse than the USAS ever was.

because battlefield is about driving cars/tanks/heli/fighter jets and fooling around a huge map?

at least that's what I got from 1942, BF2 and BC2 :o

I think anyone who really likes the modern Battlefield games knows how much better the infantry stuff has been getting. The vehicles are awesome, but DICE needed to push the on-foot stuff in a new direction and they have been. Battlefield is about more than the stuff you mentioned, it's about teamwork and utilising different classes and skills to win... and I don't see why that can't still be true in these new maps.

Besides, there's more big maps with vehicles than small ones without any already and there's even more on the way after this release... This will be a palette cleanser before the next release.

@Branthog: Playing on the 360, but noticed the same thing post-patch. I can still find games, but it seems that they are rarely full.

Looks amazing. Better than CoD: Crap Ops 2.
